Hello Lisa. I have removed the proposed deletion as there were sources for the article. However, it's going to need a huge amount of work to bring it up to an acceptable standard. I've signalled the main issues at the top of the page. These will alert other editors who may be able to help with the article. Please do not remove them until the issues have been fully rectified by either you or other editors. Until you improve the referencing rather than simply copying his CV from his own website, it may well be nominated for a deletion discussion. I'm pretty sure that he would pass the notability criteria if his work is held in permanent collections, but you need completely independent sources to verify this. So far, the only sources in the article are his website, the website of the magazine backing his film and asking for finance help from readers for the post-production work, and an interview where he talks about himself in a relatively minor publication. More importantly I have removed the section on the film as it was a copyright infringement. Please see my comments and linked guidelines at Talk:Dean Dempsey and take them on board. Some words of advice[edit]
Hi Lisa, me again. I've referenced and copyedited the Dean Dempsey myself to bring up to minimum standards. I've removed the maintenance tags apart from the Exhibitions section which still needs references for quite a few of the shows. See also my comments at Talk:Dean Dempsey re Further reading. He sounds like a fascinating artist, although he is still very young and at the start of his career.
For your future articles, take it slow. Draft them carefully in your user space and make sure they comply with all our requirements before you put them into actual article space. The guide Wikipedia:Your first article is a great place to start, and don't worry too much about Wikipedia syntax and formatting. Mistakes there are easily fixed by editors who specialise in copy-editing articles. Other things are much more important....
- Don't be tempted to copy and paste material from other web sites. Likewise published books and articles, even if you plan to re-write it in your own words later. It's considered copyright violation and can cause Wikipedia (and you) a lot of hassle. Wikipedia administrators, experienced editors and a robot (CorenSearchBot) now watch out for this very carefully and on a daily basis. If found, it can result in the article being reduced to stub, or the whole article being speedily deleted. If you do find material that you want to use as background material, copy it into a word processing file (or draft email) and re-write it there before putting it into the article. Essential guides are Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing and Wikipedia:FAQ/Copyright.
- Referencing is key. This is especially so when writing about a living person. As you saw with Dean Dempsey, any unreferenced biography of a living person will be automatically proposed for deletion. But all articles need to have verifiable and reliable third-party references (not simply the web site of the article's subject). Unreferenced articles that appear to be about people or organizations with doubtful notability are much more likely to be deleted. The references are needed to verify claims in the article, establish the notability of the subject, and help the reader find further reliable sources on the subject. They need to be stated in the article, preferably as inline citations or minimally in a 'Sources' or 'References' section.
- Writing on emerging artists can be problematic. Dean Dempsey is very borderline. Many new Wikipedians think that the purpose of a Wikipedia article is to alert readers to an emerging artist who hasn't received much mainstream coverage yet, or to build them a following. But actually, it's the opposite. Wikipedia only documents subjects which are already "emerged" and notable in the Wikipedia sense. There are alternative criteria that can apply to artists at Wikipedia:ARTIST and people in general at Wikipedia:ANYBIO. Make sure you read them carefully, and make a dispassionate judgement on whether your proposed article will meet the criteria and on your ability to provide references to document this. They need to be from reliable sources which are completely independent of the subject, i.e. not from their own websites or ones related to them like programme bios, press releases, etc. Be especially careful when writing about people or organizations with which you have a personal connection (or know personally). It's a conflict of interest and makes it awfully hard to produce or edit an article with a neutral point of view and also makes it difficult to stand back and decide objectively whether they meet the inclusion criteria.
- The encyclopedic voice is essential. A biography should be written as a narrative, never be written as a CV. But because you are writing in Wikipedia's voice, make sure you keep the style of writing as neutral and "boring" as possible, no matter how respectful or enthusiastic you feel about your subject. This is a common pitfall for beginners. This is the first version of my very first article on Wikipedia back in 2006. Way too much of my personal enthusiasm and respect for that singer showing. Rockwell Blake looks much better now that I've learned the ropes. The main reason I'm telling you all this is that Wikipedia has changed a lot since I started editing here. Unfortunately, we have been invaded by public relations people and paid editors in their hundreds who are creating articles to publicize their clients. Editors who patrol newly created pages have become very wary of these editors and crack down hard when they find an article which appears to be paid-for promotion. Sometimes they mistake the enthusiastic writing style of a new editor for the deliberately promotional style used by PR people and can wrongly assume that you are writing with a conflict of interest. So make sure your writing style doesn't give that impression.
