I have been looking over at WP:RfA and I have noticed that most voters demand three months of full editing. At the end of this month I will have my full three months therefore at the end of this month may be the apprpoiate time to nominate me. Joelito 01:31, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

Greetings

Hi Tony - thanks for the note - I'll have a look at the new articles that you have done; I have been working (slowly) through your past catalogue of articles (it's very long!) and adding my ha'pworth. Have a look at some of my articles - rather an eclectic mix though! Keep in touch Brookie :) - a will o' the wisp ! (Whisper...) 04:58, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

Happy Easter!

Hi Tony! It was so kind of you to remember me and leave that lovely note on my talk page. My word, you've certainly been busy writing some interesting articles of late. Good stuff! As for me, I've been too busy lately to spend as much time on Wikipedia as I would like, and I have an entire folder full of clippings (almost 100 of them now) waiting to be turned into articles or at least attached to existing articles. Now that the school holidays have just started, I will hopefully find time to get back to this project, which I love so well. I hope you're having as joyful an Easter as I am, and that your family are all well. God bless you! David Cannon 11:10, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

¡Hola Tony!

Do you know what happened on this date in the 1940s? Well, see April 15 in baseball. Cheers, MusiCitizen 17:26, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Happy Easter!

Thanks, Tony! A Very Happy Easter to you and your family. God Bless you and all those that you care for. Linuxbeak (drop me a line) 03:18, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Great Job!

Hi! I'm new (as an active user) here on Wikipedia. You've already seen me editing some of your articles. I must say that I'm absolutely a fan of your great contributions on Puerto Rico. As a Puerto Rican myself, I'm astonished that so much information on Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans is now available on the web. I plan to begin translating some of your articles into the Spanish Wikipedia as soon as I have some more time on my hands.

I'm also wondering, how many more articles do you have planned for the Puerto Rican migration series? An article on Catalan or Mallorcan (most Catalan surnames on the island came from Mallorca) immigration to Puerto Rico is a necessary addition, in my opinion, given their large presence and legacy. Please feel free to contact me if you need any help or information on Puerto Rico.

Anyway, thanks for all your articles and keep'em coming! -- Okupat 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Rafael Noboa

Hey Tony, how are you? I was recently disambiguation San Juan when I came across this article Rafael Noboa. It is claimed that he was born in PR. It is also claimed that he is an Iraq war veteran. Could you please verify this information for me? Joelito 20:17, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Sammy Davis Jr.

Hi, I would trust this book more as it has extensive detail on Davis' grandparents and the book has good reviews. Regards Arniep 21:08, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Well as I am discussing elsewhere people often make inaccurate statements about their ancestry. This book looks thoroughly researched to me so this is not settled. Arniep 21:16, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
His mother was from NY City. It is common for people to be confused about the ancestry of a parent. Regards Arniep 21:24, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
Hello Tony, I hope this link satisfies your doubts. [1]. Regards Arniep 22:34, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
Hi, I'm not sure it is a directly comparable case as it seems there was no doubt that Roberto Cofresí's mother was Puerto Rican, whereas this book seems quite conclusive in that Davis had no Puerto Rican ancestry and he just changed it from Cuban due to political reasons. But as Davis claimed he was Puerto Rican, while it may turn out not to be true, maybe he should be listed on the Puerto Rican page with a note explaining that it was not true. It seems not too uncommon for people to make incorrect claims about ancestry, Frida Kahlo claimed her father was Jewish as she associated with other Jewish people and Marlon Brando claimed his name was French (his wife was a French speaker) but they were both actually German... Arniep 23:49, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
I think the book is really conclusive due to the extensive research and commendation it has received. I have explained the books conclusions in the article. Arniep 00:00, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
Well I am not intending to be hostile at all. I think when there is such overwhelming evidence that the information in a new book or paper is correct we should update articles to reflect this. Regards Arniep 00:12, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

My RfA

I wanted to! But I guess some editors frown on that. But thanks for the congrats. I look to you as a wiki-role model of sorts. I hope you don't mind if I ask for advice from time to time. Gracias Tony, --Rockero 04:53, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

PR Project collaboration of the month

Hello Tony. It is my intent to begin a Collaboration of the month for the Puerto Rico Wikiproject. I have suggested Politics of Puerto Rico and Economy of Puerto Rico as options for the collaboration for May. Please leave suggestions or comments on the talk page or vote for any of the choices I have suggested. Take care. Joelito 16:47, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

Elvera Sanchez

Tony some nutcase is saying that Elvera Sanchez (Sammy Davis Jr's mother ) is Cuban. He cant show any proof from the family. He claims a new book on Sammy says she was Cuban. This is hearsay as the book is not authorized by Sammy's estate. Can you put this loco out of commission and revert the article back to it's original state? [User: XLR8TION]

Thank you clearing the situation up with that moron. It seems that he is another Cuban trying to steal credit from the accomplishments of Puerto Ricans. Just like Jennifer Lopez's "jinitero" ex-husband, these Cubans give the ir country a bad name when they can't do something or prove something that they did themselves. User:XLR8TION

  • I wouldn't go as far as name calling. Tony the Marine 19:39, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

Economy of Puerto Rico

I thank you for taking interest in improving Economy of Puerto Rico, which I believe is one of the core articles which should be at a high standard. I believe that the history section came from the Library of Congress website. I will also contribute to the history section by adding some Pre-Columbian economic history since I have been reading a book on the Taínos and their ancestors. The Tainos : Rise and Decline of the People Who Greeted Columbus by Rouse is the book. It sometimes gets a little thick and hard to read for amateurs some as myself but it's interesting nonetheless. Take care. Joelito 18:19, 27 April 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for contributing to Economy of Puerto Rico. As always your contributions have elevated a Puerto Rican article to a high standard. Joelito (talk) 01:56, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Elvera Sanchez

Tony that user is still being stubborn and causing an edit war without proof. Is there a way to block this person and/or warn this person

Is there a way this person can be banned. Teh author who wrote a book on Adam Clayton Powell (his son is half Puerto Rican also) seems to be a crock writer trying to make a few bucks. When Elvera died it stated that she was survived by a daughter, Ramona of New York City. Therefore Ramona is the only one authorized to speak on behalf of her late mother. The imbecile changing the article says that the author spoke to relatives but never mentions names. Doesn't this sound unbased? Elian Gonzalez was given back to his father despite what his Uncle said his mother would have said/wanted. Elian's father spoke for his son, not a distant uncle. Ramona as her daughter should be the only person to speak and verify her mother's ancestry. The author never bother to speak to her it seems. I feel that if Sammy died and he wanted to tell everyone he was Cuban he would have done so. Your examples of Desi Arnaz and Cesar Romero are right on the point. Please advise Arniep to stop before a ban on editing will be proposed. [[User name: XLR8TION]

Elvera Sanchez

Check out my comments and the website for Sammy impersonator Louie Velez (he is Puerto Rican). He mentions a time where Elvera came up to him and confirm Sammy was Puerto Rican when he performed for the family. Arniep keeps on changing things stubbornly without a valid argument or research. It's so ugly when one person is so ignorant that he can't validate a claim with a few references. User: XLR8TION

Chat

I'm glad there are more level heads around. The two versions you linked ([2] and [3]) are much more acceptable than the last by XLR8TION. I do prefer to specify who's doing the claiming and where the views come from, since it is more information. Perhaps together we can get the article back on track and put this behind.

As for blocking authority, well... everyone has the authority to report 3RR violations, but only admins actually have the authority to block. If Arniep is violating 3RR then that should be actioned. There's no vandalism involved though. — Saxifrage 05:59, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

Tony- thanks for helping to sort this out. I understand why you would want to defend against the claim i.e. if a person had claimed Elvis was not American or Margaret Thatcher was not British people would object as you have. Unfortunately Saxifrage claims the evidence is not admissable but I believe we can say that as Sammy Davis did not know know his mother very well, he was not a reliable source for her ancestry, and that the book, which I believe to be a reliable source trumps this claim. Saxifrage claims this is original research but if we are not allowed to make judgements on reliability of sources we would have to apply equal weight to any claims made by people who were not really knowledgable about the subject they were commenting on without qualifying the claim by showing a reliable source that had contradicted it (see my comment at Talk:Elvera Sanchez). Regards Arniep 13:53, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

In the News

Hey Tony, I need your help. I wrote an article that I think should be on Wikipedia:In_the_news_section_on_the_Main_Page/Candidates, but someone listed it as a candidate before I was finished, and I'm afraid they did it without following all the appropriate procedures. I changed the title of their suggestion, but I'm still afraid it might not get listed, because it says "Submissions that do not follow the guidelines at Wikipedia:In the news section on the Main Page will not be put into the live template." Or maybe you know who to turn to? I am exhausted after this article and must leave the computer for a little while....Gracias, --Rockero 02:39, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

Will do. Thanks!--Rockero 05:37, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

GAB

Tony! I just had one of the most amazing experiences in my life! I don't know if you saw it, but my userpage has a link to my latest (non-Wikipedia) article on "the illegal immigration situation". In it I talk about the importance of the PR flag at the rallies (I know Antonio had one). It might interest you. I also want to thank you for your support. I have been having a tough time with the Great American Boycott article, but I suppose that comes with the territory when things are on the Main Page.

Thanks for the heads-up on sandboxes. I actually use them already, but on my userpage I refer to them by the French term "Bacs à sable". And I couldn't find your sandbox, so I wasn't able to check out your latest project.

Anyways, seeing your message was a welcome relief from the wiki-stress which was compacting an otherwise historic, memorable, and joyous day.

PAZ y amor, --Rockero 05:26, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

Request for assistance

Tony, I swear I always pop up on your page asking for assistance but if you feel like it, could you check out an issue I'm involved in on the article Montgomery Academy. An anonymous editor has an issue with stating that the school was founded as the result of desegregation. While other editors examined the issue and said the article was balanced and provided needed references, to be safe I added even more references to support the article (including an article in a respected newspaper quoting the school's current headmaster as saying the school was formed b/c of desegregation). I have repeatedly asked this anonymous editor to provide a reference, any reference, to back up her claims but she says she can't do that. Despite this, she keeps changing the article and arguing on the talk page and has caused another editor to say this must be taken to mediation. Could you check out the issue and state your opinion? It's frustrating that an anonymous editor who says "I know what I'm talking about. You'll just have to trust me" and is trying to whitewash (literally) the civil rights period history of all this and is able to take this to mediation without providing a scrap of evidence that what she says is true. Thanks for any help.--Alabamaboy 23:28, 3 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the comments. I checked out African immigration to Puerto Rico and it is a fascinating article. I learned a lot that I didn't know on the subject and I thought the article was really good. The only suggestions I'd have would be to expand the lead (so that is sumarizes more of the article) and, if you have them, insert any references. Best,--Alabamaboy 13:08, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
Could you check out the article again and comment (if you wish). As you will see from the talk page, a lot of discussion has been going on. The long and short of it is that a new version of the article has been worked up which addresses almost all of the anonymous editor's concerns (and all of her major ones) and still she doesn't like it. Any thoughts you might have would be welcome. Best, --Alabamaboy 15:17, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. And if you ever need anything, just let me know. Best, --Alabamaboy 18:02, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Elizabeth Vargas

You changed my edits and I changed them back. Elizabeth Vargas is beautiful and someone put the absolute worst picture of her in the worst spot of the page for her headshot which was just is really unsuitable. I dont see why you changed my edits because I think they made the page look much better and a little more professional. I would be more then happy for you to get a good headshot picture and put it up but please do not change it back.

If I may recommend some good pictures I found I encourage you use one of them for her headshot picture.

Re:List of Puerto Ricans

Hey Tony I like the addition of image to List of Puerto Ricans. However, some are creating large gaps of empty space. Maybe by reducing the number of images of relocating them this could be avoided. Joelito (talk) 00:37, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Joelito (talk) 04:07, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Famous Puerto Ricans

Is there a way you or anyone can clean up the page? Many photos were added and now the list has huge white gaps and looks disorganized. I also added the name sof two Emmy-award winning PR news anchors in New York. Denisse Oller and Jorge Ramos. Jorge Ramos (New York) is not the same person as the Mexican journalist. I have submitted a link to his online biography. Denisse's biography can be found at:

pHOTOS

I only removed two images and that had a positive effect in eliminating some white space. There are still huge gaps but all the fiugures are still notable. I just have to see if any controversy or negativity might incline me to delete that image and consolidate the list into a much more eye-catching format

African immigration

Hi Tony. Good to hear from you. I hope all is well. I had seen the article before and it looked good - your series on immigration to Puerto Rico makes me want to do the same for Trinidad. Obviously, it's a good article, so I won't waste time stating the obvious.

Potential improvements

  • Opening sentance - "Unlike others..." seems a bit weak. I think it would be better to start with a more forceful statement, and move the "unlike others" to the end of the sentance
  • The lead as a whole could be longer, including more of a synopsis of the article
  • It would be interesting if you could find some info on the life of slaves in PR, and also contrast it with life in America and in the English and French colonies. I know that Spanish law gave more rights to slaves than did English law (which is why Trinidad kept Spanish law after it was conquered by the British). Still, it never hurts to say how harsh an institution slavery actually was.
  • On the issue of integration - you might want to just make the bald statement that racism is less marked in PR society than in other socities. I think the stuff about Spain under the Moors is a little too speculative. Black and mixed women were highly sought after as sexual partners throughout the Americas. That alone did not negate racism - and free mulattos were often as prejudiced or more so than whites (perhaps because they felt the need to distance themselves from slaves). It's definitely worth pointing out that the Spanish saw mixing very differently than the English did (the French were probably intermediate between the two), and it might be worth mentioning the history, but I think it goes into too much depth, and at that level it becomes speculative.
  • I'm not sure about the origins, but one thing I noticed is that a number of black Puerto Ricans have English surnames - more than you see in the society at large (at least that was the impression I got while I was there). Does this reflect immigration from the US or the Virgin Islands/Lesser Antilles? It's something that caught my eye, and if you had any info on that it would certainly be worth adding.
  • Under the Music section you mention immigration from the English-speaking Caribbean. I remember reading also about escaped slaves from the English islands who were settled in the south and east (iirc), in part to guard against English attacks (maybe?) Information about secondary immigration would be a nice addition to the article.

That all said, I just want to re-iterate that it's a good article. Guettarda 17:09, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

I have learned from watching the Rfa page that commenting oppose votes is seen as trying to persuade votes and most users frown on that. For example see Rama's Arrow's Rfa. I had no intention of contesting the first oppose since it was not aimed at me rather it was aimed at the process. I will not try to persuade the second oppose vote. He gave a reason to oppose and I will respect it. Joelito (talk) 02:18, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

Question about MGySgt Frankie Segarra

I noticed your comment on Looper5920's talk page concerning the article on MGySgt Frankie Segarra. The external link provided only has MGySgt Segarra's quote that he was the first Hispanic in his MOS to reach the rank of MGySgt. Do you have references to indicate that he was the first Hispanic MGySgt? Though SgtMaj and MGySgt are both E9, there are far fewer MGySgts. That distinction, along with verification of being the first Hispanic MGySgt, would probably be enough to establish notability. I'll wait to respond to the article talk page until I hear back from you. —ERcheck @ 23:58, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

  1. Accuracy/Verifiability: Can you provide a reference for "first person of Puerto Rican heritage to reach the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant." There are still possible corrections that need to be made to the third and fourth paragraphs (as you did the first paragraph). 3rd paragraph still says "..is the first Puerto Rican and Hispanic to be promoted..." 4th paragraph says "...are now three Hispanics with the pay grad of E-9". Are there really only three now?
  2. Basis for notability: It is not that his notabilty within the Marine Corps ranks but rather his notability in the Puerto Rican community. Can the introductory paragraph be better worded/additional info added to reflect this? As well, wording edits to make this emphasis within the body of article? Do you have any statistics on percentage of the Corps who are Hispanic? Puerto Rican?

Consider the following ideas for the third and fourth paragraphs.

MGySgt Segarra, a veteran of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, is the first Puerto Rican to be promoted to the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant. Master Gunnery Sergeant and the rank of Sergeant Major (both E-9) are the highest enlisted ranks in the Marine Corps; however, there are far fewer Master Gunnery Sergeants than Sergeant Majors.

Other notable Hispanics with the pay grade of E-9 include:

I'm note sure of the date of SgtMaj Estrada's promotion, but you get the point. In addition, can you source the information on MGySgt Olmos? I suggest leaving out additional info on her from this article and instead, you might consider creating an article for her.

I'd also leave out the "9th highest" when referring to E-9. Highest enlisted is really what is important.

Still the suggested wording still needs some work, but I think the example above demonstrates what I'm trying to say. (Sorry, it's a bit late, so not my best work).

Puerto Rican-Americans

I am aware of that. However, the categories are about ethnicity, rather than citizenship. A Puerto Rican is a person born in the island territory of Puerto Rico. People born in Mainland United States of Puerto Rican descent (Puerto Rican-American) cannot be categorized simply as "Puerto Rican" unless they are born in the island. -- Lancini87 23:52, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but that doesn't make Puerto Ricans any more special. In fact, most (if not all) American-born citizens identify with their ethnicity and refer to them selves the same way Puerto Ricans do; simply as "Italian", "Mexican" or "Cuban". However, you don't see these people categirized that way. Again, the category is about ethnicity, not citizenship. About the Hawaiian category; it is for people from the island of Hawaii, just like the other categories in Category:American people by state. But you don't see Hawaiian people who were born in Mainland United States categorized simply as Hawaiian either. By the way, i know some Puerto Ricans and they do not consider American-born people of Puerto Rican descent simply as "Puerto Rican", even they refer to them as Puerto Rican-Americans. -- Lancini87 00:38, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
Yes, i am aware of your pride, and now more than ever. But remember, being categorized under Puerto Rican-Americans does not make them any less Puerto Rican. -- Lancini87 04:20, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
Ok, agreed! -- Lancini87 05:05, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, same here : ) -- Lancini87 05:14, 18 May 2006 (UTC)
This is such a sensitive issue among Puerto Ricans that at least one editing house that I know of, when confronted with the issue, left the category as "Puerto Ricans", pure and simple. Context may be used as to assess whether the person considers himself as a "Puerto Rican", a "Puerto Rican-American" or as an "American". This is kind of a Salomonic decision, but I don't think it is a bad practice, either demf 17:35, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Issue III - May 2006
Project news
  • The various talk page banners used by the project have been consolidated into the main {{WPMILHIST}} template, which now adds extra notices based on various parameters. The older templates are currently in the process of being replaced.
  • The old manually-maintained worklist has been replaced with a new system that allows article ratings to be provided directly on the associated talk pages, feeding an automatically generated list. Nearly two thousand articles have already been assessed, and many more still need a rating!
  • Five new task forces have been started: Chinese military history, French military history, Memorials and cemeteries, Weaponry, and World War I.
  • A new structure for the list of project members has been introduced; to save space and improve legibility, any member with no edits for at least three months will be moved to a separate list of inactive members.

Dear Tony,

I don't know you, and you don't know me, but I would like to express my sincerest appreciation for the balanced and interesting article you wrote about me. I am very humbled to be counted in your list of notable Puerto Ricans and intensely flattered. I am frankly rather impressed at the amount of research you must've put into it. I am not going to touch it, and I don't to touch what you've written, however, if you could use an image, I have uploaded this one for your use and for anyone else who might find it useful. Image

Thank you SO much for the honor!

Need help with renaming/moving photo

Tony, I'm back with a request similar to one you helped me with months ago... moving/renaming a picture. I had a major typo in uploading Image:USS H-3 1916 H53850.jpg; It should be named Image:USS_H-3_1917_h35850.jpg. All the summary information and licensing is correct. It links only to USS H-3 (SS-30). Would you pleased make the page move for me? Thanks. (Is there an official process for this, other than asking an admin?) —ERcheck @ 18:51, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

  • Thanks for your help! —ERcheck @ 22:20, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Tony, Thanks for the instructions. I can easily do steps 1 (upload with proper name) and 2 (relink in article). However, when I go to the old image (with the incorrect name), the (del) button is not active. I looked at Image:PKVanRiper USMC.jpg, where I uploaded a better version — and I find that the "old" version has (del) active, while the current version is grayed out (del) is grayed out. Is this only for editors, with admins having the delete ability. My other interest is based on what works for articles — a move moves the history with it. With the delete of the image, the history of the image upload(s) is not moved. —ERcheck @ 00:45, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Admin nom

Tony, I'm honored that you consider that I would make a good admin. I have been contributing to Wikipedia for over 6 months, have over 10,000 edits, and contributions in various area (namespace, image space, talk, WikiProjects, etc.) I noticed that there is a pre-admin mentoring in place (don't remember where that is). I'd prefer to go into a nomination with a more in-depth understanding of expectations/requirements, etc. I welcome your suggestions. —ERcheck @ 01:04, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

  • In my earlier days on Wikipedia, I spent a lot of time patrolling New Pages and Recent Changes; then moved to spending time on AFD ... as I worked to become more familiar with the underlying processes and policies of Wikipedia. This lead to time on fixing disamb links, missing sources, cleanup, missing articles (1911), etc. In the past months, I've spent most of my time contributing new articles, the USMC portal and on Military history Wikiproject maintenance. I still periodically take a break from these activities to welcome newcomers and RC patrol. I have over 2000 items on my watch list that I keep an eye out for vandalism on. I know that there are a standard set of questions that are asked of admins on nomination. I'd appreciate it if you would direct me to those questions and give me a chance to think about them. I have a particularly busy work week ahead of me, so give me some time to review. —ERcheck @ 01:26, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Daniel Santos

Tony, I undestand your edit about Daniel Santos (you removed the line that I added once, stating that he's regarded as a larger than life character by most biographers). That's not a diss against Daniel, that's actually a fact(!). The guy did more in a lifetime than at your typical dozen of average Joes(!). He wasn't particularly proud of many of his life mistakes, and some he regretted (not meeting his Cuban son was one of them), but he DID live a life that deserves, at least, a Hollywood movie... it did produce at least four biographical books, plus plenty of headlines in his day. That his life is at least interesting -to say the least- is a fact that his biographers agree upon.

How would you rewrite this as to both assess this fact and adhere to the NPOV policy? -David

  • What I would do and will do is state that he was condidered by many as a larger than life character. Tony the Marine

Re:Block

I have no idea what you're talking about. The IP has been blocked 5 distinct times, but never by me, and never for more than 3 hours as it is a shared IP. Further, you were able to post to my talk page, so it would seem the block isn't affecting you anymore. Let me know if there's anything else I can clarify or help with. (ESkog)(Talk) 19:54, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

The IP you did reference is an AOL account, so I assume that's what you're using (or something else which uses the AOL proxy pool). Wikipedia:Advice to AOL users has some information which explains how sometimes, registered users may be the occasional victims of autoblocking from some other user's vandalism. There is currently a solution in the works, but I haven't heard how close it is to implementation. (ESkog)(Talk) 00:20, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Marine Corps portal

Tony, If you haven't checked lately, the USMC Portal has had some updates... see the quote, DYK, and featured picture (recent, with good story)... —ERcheck (talk) @ 03:14, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Chesty Puller and Pedro del Valle

Excellent picture. Where did you find it? Do you know what year it was taken? It was Col Puller and MajGen del Valle at the time. I wonder who was more impressed? —ERcheck (talk) @ 04:12, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

More for article

Tony, I think LtGen del Valle would make a good featured bio for the Portal. If you are interested, I'd like to see a few things added or expanded (#1-#5, rest are additional ideas):

  1. Expand introductory paragraph(s) to include: Service from WWI, his leadership in WWII Okinawa and his role in changing the view of opposed landings (see next bullet point).
  2. From Profile of del Valle, in Alexander, Col Joseph H., USMC (Ret), "Senior Marine Commanders", The Final Campaign: Marines in the Victory on Okinawa, the impact of del Valle's leadership on amphibious assault and opposed landings.
  3. A short sentence in the article about the change of command which ties in with the Chesty Puller photo.
  4. Add to the Image file a complete reference of source, etc. (See Image:Matthews_DP.jpg.
  5. del Valle's writings: See USMC History Bookstore, as well as del Valle, MajGen Pedro A., "Guam, the Classical Amphibious Operation," Military Review, April 1947; and del Valle, BrigGen Pedro A., "Massed Fires on Guam," Marine Corps Gazette, December 1944.
  6. From 11th Marines History — del Valle's leadership was the only time the 11th Marines were commanded by a general.
  7. Perhaps his consideration to be Governor of Puerto Rica (see Truman's calendar at [4] )

What do you think? —ERcheck (talk) @ 11:27, 13 June 2006 (UTC)

Expanded article

It's nice to see more information added to LtGen del Valle's article to reflect the his wide-ranging contributions. Thanks. I've appreciated the opportunity to learn more about him. —ERcheck (talk) @ 21:16, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

  • I made some copyedits, rearranged some of the information (e.g. to emphasize his leadership in the introduction), formatted references, and deleted the first external link. I put that link on the talk page with a note. (The information no longer exists at that site.) —ERcheck (talk) @ 22:43, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

Sgt Alexander Foley, USMC, MOH

Tony, Here is a link that will provide you with a start on the Alexander Foley article: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/pa/schuylkill/bios/f400001.txtERcheck (talk) @ 01:48, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

  • I guess the questions to ask are —
    • What was going on in the world in 1910 that may have made it "impractical"?
    • Or maybe, what was happening in 1910 at the Culebra Naval Station? Or in the Navy? Or San Juan?

ERcheck (talk) @ 02:14, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Kinda new to this

I'm kind of new to this, I filmed a television show called Grand Strand but when I tried to create the article it wouldn't let me and I could only make the article if I named it

The grand strand

Can you help me make it named Grand Strand like it should be please? WorkingHard 03:28, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Sorry about the wife, another question

Do I have to recreate the entry? Or can you edit it to just say Grand Strand TV Show ?

I really don't know what I am doing and don't want to mess the website up.WorkingHard 17:09, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi. I'm glad that I get the benefit of the doubt (esp. considering your username). I genuinely think that the terrible Puerto Rico coverage at Wikimedia Commons is a shame, and almost inexcusable, given that historical Puerto Rican material should be available easily through the United States government (what does it say that our only entry for "People of Puerto Rico" is Marc Anthony?). In any case, I'd like to assure you that you're right in assuming I have no other agenda than trying to make Wikipedia as free and reusable as possible. Jkelly 23:32, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Unblocks?

I noticed you were trying to unblock IP addresses in the 207.200.116.* range. Keep in mind the whole sector has been blocked several times over and over due to a vandal who's very rapidly changing IPs in that range and vandalizing multiple times a day for the past several days. Check out the WP:LTA for the AOL vandalism from that range. Kevin_b_er 05:50, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi Tony - how are you doing? I have a question for you regarding Juan Ponce de Leon. In the list of Spanish governors of Trinidad Juan Trejo Ponce de León, also known as Juan Troche Ponce de León, shows up as governor between 1569 and 1571. Based on the Juan Ponce de Leon II article I assume that they are the same person, since his father is listed as Garcia Troche - thus, assume that Troche should be his first/paternal surname, provided that the modern fathers-surname mothers-surname system was the same 450 years ago. Thanks. Guettarda 05:37, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Good to see you Tony. Thanks for the info. Right now I am working from a "Historical Dictionary", so everything is just short entries, and the guy who wrote it is an amateur historian (though a very accomplished and dedicated one), so the coverage is uneven. He is the one who uses the name Tejo (I made a mistake and typed Trejo above), but says "also know as Troche". The bit in the History of Trinidad and Tobago came from another source, which, iirc, was an academic historian who referenced the original royal archives in Spain, so I am inclined to trust her.
To the best of my knowledge, the British weren't in Trinidad in this time period, but neither were the Spanish. In the 1500s the British were just in the Caribbean as raiders - there were no settlements until the 1600s. There were no Spanish settlements either (the first one was Ponce de Leon's, which apparently lasted about a year). I'll look back at the other source (I returned it to the library, so I don't have it right now). Guettarda 14:01, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

New article for Miguel Keith, Medal of Honor recipient

Tony, You might be interested in the newest biography — Miguel Keith, USMC, who served in Vietnam (1969-1970) ... see especially his citation. —ERcheck (talk) @ 02:06, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

  • I did notice that his time overlapped yours, though you didn't serve in the same unit. I too was curious if you ever crossed paths. —ERcheck (talk) @ 23:51, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
  • You may already have this reference on Sgt. Foley, but there is a contact name at the end of his bio here: medalofhonor.com. —ERcheck (talk) @ 23:57, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Grito de Lares

I think you misunderstood is proposal. He wishes to move the article to Grito de Lares, removing the parenthetical translation. The translation, The Cry of Lares would become a redirect. i think his proposal is acceptable since it kwwps the original Spanish name in the title. Joelito (talk) 01:06, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

USMC Portal - featured biography

Tony, click on over to the USMC Portal and check out the new featured biography. —ERcheck (talk) @ 03:03, 25 June 2006 (UTC) Well thank you very much for your comments on my article. I'm the fouder of Recreado Real Cuerpo de Artilleria dela Plaza de San Juan de Puerto Rico and member of the Regimiento Fijo de Puerto Rico, both historical recreation groups endorsed by the NPS, San Juan Historic Site. I'll hang around for some editing and posting, I have noticed that much of the information posted is the product of the beaten path and not of serious research, and it needs revision; do I have foud many articles very much well written. Have found some sttuborn posters that simply do not want to learn. Let ignorance sort them out!!
