Can someone explain the difference between an external link and a citation? When do you use one and not the other? I often see both in articles and wonder why they are both there.

Hi Masterrows, Sorry I've been so long in replying to you. Visits abroad, work commitments, the fact that I didn't really have time to respond properly to the long messages that were piling up, and a feeling that it was best to let things be until the page settled down, meant that I haven't been on Wikipedia for some time. I'm not an administrator and even if I were I wouldn't want to use my administrative priviliges to impose a certain version on a group of good faith editors. What I haven't said elsewhere is that I read the Telegraph and Spectator regularly and I enjoy Charles Moore's writing. Recent allegations made against Policy Exchange caused me disappointment more than anything. I want to be fair to both sides and I will come back to the page in time and make such changes slowly where they seem necessary. You're right. Edit wars do put people off, and not only new users. When I think I see an edit war emerging I generally stay away for a while - it doesn't matter if the page exists in a state I dislike for a couple of weeks.
