Burley-in-Wharfedale[edit]

I second that welcome & say that you have certainly made a good start. I have a minor question though, should Burley in Wharfedale definitely be hyphenated? I'm pretty sure I've seen it in various places hyphenated but my handy West Yorkshire street atlas does not hyphenate it while it's Lancastrian sister does hyphenate Clayton-le-woods for example so I take it the map editors had some reason not to hyphenate it. As councillor for the area I reckon there's a good chance you've got it right but can you provide some evidence please? MGSpiller 22:08, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - thanks - answer is I dont know - I don't think there is a definative answer. Most atlases do not hypenate (some do seem to), though this may be a matter of policy. the local railway station sign, metro guide, and route planners do. I think to/not to hypenate is more custom than anything. I simply accepted the hypenation when I clicked a link from another article (menston) and got 'this article does not exist yet', and made it consistent, but speaking to a few local residents who know these things I get very mixed messages. I certainly have no problem (or preference) either way. I belive the origin of the hypenation is usually to make it clear that the 'in wharfedale' is part of the place name and not simply a description of geogrphical location. For an encyclopedia it may, therefore, be redundant. I do not hypenate it in normal use. Matt Palmer 19:05, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

OK start with the easy question. The usual custom with this sort of conversation is to put the responses in the other person's talk page as they will then get an automatic notice at the top of the next page they open telling them there is a message in their talk page. However putting a note on the talk page that there is a response somewhere else is perfectly acceptable & works well, indeed this discussion should by rights take place on the talk page of Burley in Wharfedale but it was easier to put it here because I knew you would notice.

Next hyphenation. It would definitely be a good idea to create a redirect page at the non-hyphenated name. It might be a good idea to put a small note on the Burley in Wharfedale page to say that the hyphenation is not used consistently. While we're discussing redirects, there ought to be redirects from other capitalisations as well to ensure that if someone looks for "burley-in-wharfedale" for example will find the right page. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

File permission problem with File:Portrait-philipdavies.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Portrait-philipdavies.jpg, which you've attributed to Philip Davies.. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
