Welcome to the Months of African Cinema!

Greetings!

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which has been dedicated to improving contents that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora.

This is a global online edit-a-thon, which is happening in at least 5 language editions of Wikipedia, including the English Wikipedia! Join us in this exciting venture, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section, if you haven't done so already.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing Users who are able to achieve the following:

Commas

Hi, Mlg - question about the following sentence: Prior to the 2010 referendum, the Netherlands Antilles, comprising the islands of Curaçao, Bonaire, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten and Saba, were governed as.... - I'm thinking drop the comma after Antilles. Delsorting lists

Hi, MLG - I just added this AfD to the TP of WikiProject Women and WikiProject Women’s sport, but don’t have a clue as to what other WP projects may have an interest in this, do you? Also, what can I do when reviewing articles in the relative queues for NPP & AfC to make sure delsorting notices go to the relevant projects as needed? Hi Atsme! I think maybe WikiProject Ice Hockey might be interested--but I'm not sure if field hockey and ice hockey overlap in interest. :( Perhaps listing them with their countries and associated WP projects might help, too. I think if the talk pages have the correct TP banners, they should show up at the WikiProject's notices. Sometimes it seems to take a day or so to show up. Oh, ok - so I probably should read the actual project pages. Northamerica1000 is among the most thorough when it comes to posting notes to AfDs and delsorting but he’s been busy in RL. It’s not something I do often, so I tend to forget the process. Once it sticks in my feeble brain, it’s there for life but that’s also how long it might take before it sticks. 😁 Atsme✍🏻📧 17:06, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

Template:Woman's club movement, and List of women's club buildings

Hi, hey I don't understand the syntax of the Template:Woman's club movement which you developed, and I just messed it up a bit with my attempt to add List of women's club buildings there. I hope you could perhaps fix it?

Part of the issue is where to put mention of the buildings list. Frankly I don't really like the fact that the list got renamed to be about buildings. I think I created it as a List of women's clubs. Like there are many lists of churches, where we don't distinguish between churches as buildings vs. churches as congregations. I think it would be better to have one list of women's clubs, where some of the linked items will be defunct ones where just a building survives, some will be defunct clubs where there is no building, some will be ongoing current clubs with or without notable buildings.

The current Template:Woman's club movement overlaps somewhat with the list, but the template omits numerous notable women's clubs that are redlinks in the list. --Doncram (talk) 19:01, 3 October 2018 (UTC)

Project updates
  • ORES predictions are now built-in to the feed. These automatically predict the class of an article as well as whether it may be spam, vandalism, or an attack page, and can be filtered by these criteria now allowing reviewers to better target articles that they prefer to review.
  • There are now tools being tested to automatically detect copyright violations in the feed. This detector may not be accurate all the time, though, so it shouldn't be relied on 100% and will only start working on new revisions to pages, not older pages in the backlog.

request for research assistance

invitation to an exhibition at the Woman’s Art Club of Cincinnati

Dear MLG, In anticipation of the October focus on Clubwomen I hope you might have some time to help me find some secondary sources for two Women's Clubs.

The first is the Woman’s Art Club of Cincinnati for which I can only find a primary source on the history. If it is the oldest existing women’s art club operating without interruption in the United States, there might be something, somewhere.

The second is the Palette Club (of Chicago). This is a woman's art club founded around the turn of the century. Its name is so similar to The Palette and Chisel Club that I am having a hard time researching it. The Palette and Chisel Club does have a page on Wikipedia, but it isn't the all-woman's club I would like to write about.

If you have a chance to look into either of these clubs, I would really appreciate it. No rush...we have all of October.

Hi Sue, Rosie put me in touch with you. Here is a link to the 1000 Women in Religion Project. • https://parliamentofreligions.org/parliament/womens-task-force/1000-women-religion-project. We have a list of over 1000 women in religion. We have checked through half the list for the presence of an article on Wikipedia. To this date we have 500 names of women in religion that we know are not on Wikipedia. We have well over 500 more to sort through. We have the full list and the list we have already checked through in two different excel spread sheets. We are hoping that this list can be on Wikipedia. Megalibrarygirl, I am, as you know, in the process of learning all the ins and outs of Wikipedia. I do not believe I have made a Wiki page. Although I have been responding to so many helpful comments, that may have happened somewhere along the way. We do have a meet up page for the Parliament of World Religions event. I tend not to watch Women in sports, Atsme, just because I don't get into sports. I occasionally work on sports articles, though, so I do run into them on AfD. You may want to post the question on the WiR talk page. Women in computing

Thanks very much, Sue, for the extensive development work you have been doing on Women in computing and on Timeline of women in computing. You have certainly made enormous improvements to both. While I realize that developments in computer technology have stemmed first and foremost from the United States, I wonder whether it would be worthwhile including more women from Europe and Asia who are recognized as having pioneered significant developments in their own countries. One of the problems is that female computer scientists are recognized under rather different terms in other languages. These include, for example, French: informaticienne, German: Informatikerin, Danish: Datalog. If and when I have time, I'll try to add women who are considered to have been pioneers or significant contributors in their own countries. This might also provide a basis for creating or adding to redlists. In this connection, it might be useful to create country categories for the non-Americans now included in Category:Women computer scientists and listing them under Category:Women computer scientists by nationality. I'll see what I can do for a few European countries for a start. Ultimately, it would be useful to have a List of women in computing, or separate lists by country. But that would be quite a task! Ipigott Thank you so much! Also, I'm really glad you brought up the importance of including women from other countries. I'm really trying and that's what's bogged me down so much this month (among other things in RL). I'm so glad that you can help me out. I was beginning to get frustrated. Not only are women written out of computer history, so they're hard to find, but also I didn't know about the other terms in different languages. Because there's a high rate of women in South Asia going in computer science, I think they should be easier to find, but maybe there's a different term for the field there, too. I agree that eventually, there is enough information to split by country, but this is huge because it's not been undertaken by enough of us on Wiki. I've also been dismayed that articles about computer science and programming leave out many women who lead in the field or who made innovations. I've slowly been adding to those, too, but it's also a monumental task. I must keep reminding myself the journey of a 1,000 steps... Megalibrarygirl (talk) 13:58, 26 October 2018 (UTC)

I think I've just about finished working on the national categories for the time being. I assume nearly all of those left in Category:Women computer scientists are Americans. I've added a handful of names to the timeline but could add more if excellence at the national level is deemed important. It also looks to me as if coverage of woman computer scientists outside the major English-speaking countries is still pretty poor. Maybe we should initiate a Women in Red focus on them soon. And while I'm here, I'd be interested to know how you are dealing with the Women in Religion redlist for November. Thank you so much for helping me with this, Ipigott! I want to add more to the articles and also to accompanying articles such as Human computers. The fact that women are left out so much of this on Wikipedia is terrible. I really appreciate your help. As for the Parliament event, I have a list of names they're looking at. I've started Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Religion 1000 and I'm checking to see if the person on their list is likely notable before adding a redlink. It's taking me a little bit of time and all day yesterday I didn't have time to work on it. :( I should be able to add some today. I've started at the bottom of the list for no particular reason.
