Tigray/Tigrinya[edit]

Please discuss before making any major changes or moves like that. There's a reason why the article is where it is. There are too many different names that Tigrés/Tigrinyas can be called, and since the article is about people on both side of the border (their differences aren't great enough to warrant separate articles, though it probably warrants a heading on the Tigray people page explaining any differences) the neutral "Tigray people" term has been chosen since there is no widespread English use either.

Eritrea[edit]

Why are you getting so angry? It was me who proposed that we take out Amharic, but it seems (from the capitalization in your edit summary), that you're removing it to somehow spite me. Either way, I don't think it should be on the list, but I do think that it should be mentioned that much (most?) of the educated class speaks Amharic as a second language, and perhaps some near Om Hajer and the border with Gonder speak it as a first language. I'll go find a source.

Nationalities is problem in English, and in the era of the nation-state. Can you use "groups"? Do you explain it all later in the text?

If "groups" is no good, at the very least, put "nationalities" in quotes; but I'm nor sure they'll like that.

I reverted it for two reasons:

It seems to be more about Eritrea's relationship with Ethiopia (instead for instance with Aksum),
It is far too in depth about the historical aspect, the historical context is too specific.

Basically it seems to me that it belongs in the historical section and not the lead section. I draw this conclusion from the recommendations of Wikipedia, specifically about the lead section and I would also recommend you read through the section for an actual Featured Article (the one that I have been following are People's Republic of China and Libya). WP Eritrea[edit]

Thanks for your message. Alas, I am afraid I know rather little about Eritrea. However, I am one of those involved in maintaining a bit of order in the African material (categorising and stubbing) so I'll check through the Eritrean material from time to time. It is not so long ago that WP:WSS created the {{Eritrea-stub}} template and I can see you have already created an {{Eritrea-bio-stub}} template. I've taken the liberty of cleaning up the code a bit, but unfortunately the Eritrean material has too few stub articles to live up to our standard guideline of 60 stub articles for a new stub category, so the -bio category is a bit thin. I think WP:WSS will watch and see what happens, but if the -bio category doesn't show signs of "growth" we will normally suggest keeping the template but make both {{Eritrea-bio-stub}} and {{Eritrea-stub}} use the same category (Category:Eritrea stubs) until we have more material. You are more than welcome to comment here: [1]. For the time being, I think WP:WSS will wait and see.

Athletes/Sportspeople[edit]

In Wikipedia, Category:Athletes is for participants in the sport athletics (track and field). Category:Sportspeople is for participants of any sport. Please don't mingle the two. And since we have Category:Eritrean athletes, we don't really need a category called Eritrean runners. I do however note your point about non-reverse name order. But please don't blank the category sort key. Instead, have the sort key point to the first name like I did with Mebrahtom Keflezighi [2]. Because: When no sort key is written, some editors presume that it is lacking and will therefore insert one. To avoid inserting of the wrong sort key (Keflezighie, Mebrahtom) by someone else, it's better to have the correct sort key there at once. And it's quick and easy, like edit summaries. Hi Merhawie. Thanks for your note. I added the word because the NCEW is a national trade union center, not just a single trade union. Here's a description from ICTUR.

"The NCEW is now reported to be independent of the government and the PFDL. It comprises some 250 unions and five federations, the largest being the Textile, Leather and Shoe Federation."

Adi/Addi[edit]

I think we should standardize the "Adi/Addi" villages as "Addi" for Tigrinya names and "Ad" for Tigre names. The reason why the Tigrinya form has the "-i" at the end is solely because the "d" is geminated (i.e. doubled in length), so that's the best approximation. Is Adi Teklezan mainly Tigre or Tigrinya? I think the Encyclopaedia Aethiopica has the article at Ad Teklezan, but I've seen evidence showing it's mainly Tigrinya-speaking. I have chosen to use the standard in Eritrean Government documents. For instance, Adi Tekelezan is from a Ministry of Public Works document. Specifically for that town though, if you look on the brief history I wrote on it, the town was originally settled by the Tigre but a significant population of Tigrinya immigrated there. As for who is the predominant? Well Eritrean population statistics never report ethnicity (at least none of the documents I have been privy to). Interesting that you confuse crims by having your user page suggesting (because of category names that probably should say "from" instead of "in") that you are in two states at once; and your "name" looks to me (with IE6) just like the four-rectangle postcode blanks that many envelope-makers add for the Australian and New Zealand market (where we manage with just 4 digits, not the 5 in your zipcodes).

With your interest in north-east Africa, maybe you could create the article about the tribe named "Taita" - I found (because that's a New Zealand placename) that the original article was a redirect to a type of bread, so I converted it to a disambig; but when I looked at what linked to it I found a third meaning - more important than the other two, maybe - mentioned on several pages.

:) The four rectangles that you are probably seeing are probably because you dont have the Ge'ez alphabet font, which you can find at here. I will try to do some work on that page (the Taita tribe in Kenya), but to be honest my knowledge about the areas around Eritrea drop off exponentially. I just came here to see if you were continuing your discussion with BanyanTree but noticed this. Just wanted to mention that you might also want to consider Code 2000. While it is shareware, not free, it is only US$5 and is a quite useful font to have. I can see many scripts thanks to this font. Of course, it probably isn't perfect and a dedicated font would be better if it's a language your particularly interested in or can actually read or you want to show someone who can actually read the language. But for general use and just to actually see what's out there, IMHO it's enough. There are attempts to construct free unicode fonts but AFAIK none of them are as good as Code 2000 yet. Myself, i'm only abt one step beyond confusing Er. w/ Eth.: i've known for i-can't-remember-how-long that the Italian conquest of Eth. was launched from the more, uh, conventional colony of Er.; i also scored points at a nominally Eth'n restaurant by asking questions and discovering that the Er'n i recalled meeting (before independence) was a relative of the owner. Not bad, i guess -- tho only bcz Yanks are supposed to be even more ignorant than i am.
_ _ As to B.G., i hope you realize (but couldn't be sure from what you said) that

The crucial issue for piping Cats is alphabetization (bcz the piping never appears except in the edit pane), independent of how the name would and wouldn't be handled between Eritreans.
A bio article is probably incomplete (his sounds like an example) unless either
1. the subject conforms to the West European-style format of given name(s) followed by surname(s), or
2. the subject comes from a place where a CJK-like language is widely spoken, or
3. the bio explains what is going on instead, IMO preferably in the lead sentence if it can be done in less than about 6 words, and, if needed, soon thereafter (probably in the next 'graph after the lead 'graph) in more detail.
Neither the piping of Cats nor entries on LoPbN and other lists of names has room to explain anything (except, depending on the nature of the list, in the form of normally putting something at least vaguely surname-like first, to clarify alphabetization), and thus relies on linking to the bio for providing the details about the format of the name.
Thus for Cat piping & lists that are organized predominantly alpha-by-surname, the relevant question is
What would this person say (assuming they're familiar enough with the cultures of English-language societies, and would rather get the job done quickly than lose time enlightening the clerk) when asked about their name at the Western consulate or the Western air line? I.e., when the clerk says "I need to fill in this surname blank; how much of your name identifies your family, as opposed to distinguishing you from others in your family?"

Icelanders and pre-revolutionary Russians have a quasi-surname that differs from that of their spouse or siblings of the opposite sex, but amounts to a surname for discussing them in English. If you're from Tamil Nadu, IIRC, you have only a given name, and clarify by mentioning your father's given name (and for all i know your paternal grandfather's, when aambiguity persists), but if you come to the US, you'll probably say your father's given name when asked for a surname. Those are examples of what we're looking for, in Cat piping and before the comma on LoPbN.

But despite at least a (very welcome!) heads-up from you, i still don't know enuf about Eritrean naming to be sure whether to put "Beraki Ghebreselassie" or "Ghebreselassie, Beraki", and i'm anticipating this possibility: that the rdr "Beraki G/sellasie" exists because his father is named Selassie or Sellassie, and "Ghebre-" functions much as "-dóttir and -sson do. I say that out of ignorance, but see a need to rule it out if we are to leave B.G. as you did.
_ _ BTW, good for you when you put the uninverted name in as piping, instead of just reverting back to no piping: doing so communicates that you intentionally left it uninverted, rather than simply not realizing that piping to something else must be done on bios, or explicitly ruled out.

The "G/" is because "Gebre" is a common element in Ethiopian and Eritrean names, much like "Haile" (which can be abbreviated sometimes as "H/." "Gebre" means "servant of" (Like Abdul/ Abd al-...), while "Haile" means "power of." Both are common elements in religious names (cp. Gebre Selassie, Haile Selassie, "Servant of the Trinity," "Power of the Trinity," respeectively). Ethiopian and Eritrean names are patronymic like Tamil names. Eritrean elections template[edit]

The template is one of a standardised set (for the complete list, see here). The templates include all votes at national level, i.e. presidential, Senate and parliament elections together with referenda. As far as I can work out, Eritrea has never held national elections, and the independence referenda is the only vote ever held at national level. You are right about that. But I do not think that BosNewsLife qualifies as a "news agency" (though I must admit I am not sure). I do however, believe that do to the gravity of the accusation that confirmation from a news agency with less POV than BosNewsLife which obviously has a particular position. Either that or a discussion about the responses to such past allegations. Furthermore it would likely be more suitable for inclusion in the Christianity in Eritrea page. Fronts[edit]

It depends what one means by fronts. For example the commando raids on Norway are not usually seen as part of the Western Front, nor for that matter are the strategic bombing campaigns of World War II. I used the sub-secton header "Fighting Spreads to Somalia" because it was the one used in the first reference. Well the section specifically talks about the involvement of the EIJ and the EIS and these groups do not (at least to my knowledge) operate in Somalia, the Oromia or anywhere but Eastern Sudan and Western Eritrea. Hi Merhawie -- Could have alook at this article? It mentions some landmarks that I don't recognize, so I suspect that they are in modern Eritrea. Not that this is a strong argument; there are a lot of placenames in Ethiopia I don't recognize, but Jacobis did a lot of missionary work from Tigray northwards so I think it's likely. You are correct, I apologize, I had meant to put "rv" with an explanation but I may have gotten "trigger" happy. Perhaps a phrase like "Although its charter specifically says that it is not a one party state, no other political parties are currently in existence." This would go along with, "All newspapers are controlled by the government, and there are no privately owned radio or TV stations."

Yom and other Ethiopians have single handedly written much of our history and the border war pages, claiming victory but needing a peace deal to end a war, in which was named a stalemate by most reporters, would make the border war the only war in which a nation claims victory but needing a peace deal to end it. Step up your game and change the info to pre-Yominization editing. I came across Helen Berhane through Amnesty International, and thought the defaultsort was an obvious mistake, so I "corrected" it (and similarly for the other people who were "obviously" out of place in Category:Eritrean singers). I see from the above, and from the Habesha_name article, that things are actually more complicated than this. If my understanding is correct:

I think all biographical articles on Eritreans should have a hidden comment next to the categories (as Meb Keflezighi) explaining the naming convention, otherwise someone else will eventually come along and "correct" the sortkey for you.
Similarly, I think all the category articles relating to Eritrean people should have a brief note on naming conventions, otherwise somebody else is going to make the same mistake I made.
What about the situation in categories dominated by non-Eritreans? Do we need different sortkeys in the same article to cater for them?

Eritrean history between the fall of Axum and Italian Eritrea?[edit]

The formation of Eritrea mentions Daamat, Axum and skips 1000 year history between fall of Axum in 930 and Italian Eritrea in 1890. What was the history of Eritrea between these 1000 years? Was it an independent nation separate from Axum successors like Zagwe Dynasity, solomonic dynasity, Zemene Mesafint? Ofcourse any Eritrean would ask this question and this Wikipedia article doesn't give a clear answer eventhough the Geez Chrstians are rich in written documents unlike much of Africa's history written based on by unreliable oral history. Most African countries begin their history from their independence from Europeans mainly 1950s and 60s because they don't have written history before the Europeans introduced to them. However, the Christian and Muslim population of Horn of Africa had written documents that dates back over 3,000 years.

In my opnion politics and history should be separate and whatever history should be told inspite of it's negative impact in the politics. Some people maynot like Gragn Mohamed who ruled all the chrstian land including Eritrea but it's our history and it should be told. So do the Zagwe dynasity who are cushitic ethnic Agaws who ruled northern Ethiopia and presentday Eritrea but still semetic speaking Tigrayans and Amharas should know the history of Zagwe dynasty. So do the solomonic dynasity who replaced Zagwe dynasity and who expanded to southern Ethiopia including muslim Ifat & Adal territories, as well as the Christian Bahre Negash province.

Accepting Axum's history while denying the Eritrean people to know their role in the successors of Axums who ruled with Axum's traditions, languages and religion is a contradiction. I can provide many evidences regarding to the history of Eritrea (Bahrnegash) being part of Axum's successors i.e. Zagwe and Solomonic dynasties up until 1890 if requested. EthiopianHabesha, the history of this period is poorly documented and researched leading to a focus on hyperbole and rhetoric. Myths about the Zagwe in southern Eritrea are balanced by evidence of Beja/Belew dominance in the region. How do we fill this 1,000 year gap should we say Eritrea and Ethiopia have been stateless for a 1,000 year until 19th centuary, until Europeans created a state for us? If its true that we have been stateless and can be proven then it should told. As far as I know the whole Horn of Africa was ruled by several dynasties (states) and as Eritrea being part of this region then my question is which dynasties administered Eritreans until 19th century? The state formation under every country is listed orderly without gap. For instance if you see Kenya they start from 1963 and in Somalia page all the Muslim dynasties who ruled Somali people from 10th century upto it's independence from Italy were listed without gap. There is evidence describing the region as being ruled by various "mutual independent Beja Kingdoms" followed by a period of rule by the Belew Kingdom, which ultimately was brought down by the Funj and Ottoman Empires. Meanwhile, the south-central portion of the Eritrean highlands may have been hotly disputed between the indigenous people's and forces from beyond the Mereb. In the 16th century state-let of Midri Bahri rose but as with each of the kingdoms described previously there is too little verifiable information. A key doctrine of Wikipedia is the policy regarding verifiability. The map clearly shows that much of presentday Eritrea is within the Abysinian teritory meaning both presentday Ethiopia & Eritrea were ruled by one dynasty (state) called Solomonic. As far as i know there is no separate Christian dynasty in the Horn of Africa other than solomonic after the fall of Zagwe Dynasity. The map was published in 1843 by University of Florida. Isn't it a good quality source? By the way the rulling classes of solomonic dynasity has never called their empire Abyssinia or Habesha. since 4th centuary Axumites and their successors use the title "Niguse Negest Ze Ethiopia" (King of Kings of Ethiopia) when they assume power. When they say Ethiopia they were implying all the black African land (land of the Chrstian, Islam or traditional religion followers) that is within their knowledge that they had authority. The official language of the church and the state was Geez. Eventhough they use Ethiopian name for official use the people identify mainly with names like Habesha, Agaw, Tigre, Gojam, Shewa etc. Europeans on the other hand call us Abysinians and use the Ethiopian name to refer the colored Africans including Horn of Africans.EthiopianHabesha (talk) 15:49, 13 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

EthiopianHabesha, first lets be clear, the UF did not publish the map - Jesse Olney did. Although laudable, there is no evidence that his map reflected any reality (particular in his background as a schoolteacher at the time). It is probably more reliable to base understandings based on those who actually went there and parsing their information. For example, James Bruce, a Scottish explorer who noted that Midri Bahri and Abyssinia as two wholly separate and distinct entities that were often at war. Similarly into the 19th century, from which your map comes, Catholic missionaries note that the people of Bogos and Mensa were separate and indepednent. Additionally, Abyssinia's Yohannes, in the 1860s, had trouble extending dominion over Eritrea because the "Eritrean" chiefs of the time were "committed to making Eritrea ungovernable by imperial Abyssinia." In history of Axum and all it's successors there has never been centralized government and they use a confederation style of administration. Bahre Negash was equally separate and independent as Shewa, Gojam, Tigre, Begemider, Wag Shum (state of the Agaw people) and Wollo who usually have their own kings. As the title "king of kings of Ethiopia" indicates the emperor allows other chiefs to have the title of Nigus or Sultan to administer their semi autonomous territory. While there has been King of Shewa, King of Tigre, King of Gojam there has never been Nigus of Medri Bahri or Bahre-Negash recorded in history showing that even Shewans were more separate and independent when compared to Medir-Behari. Usually when the Niguse Negest dies it follows with war between regional kings to assume the title of "King of Kings". Of course Midri Behari will usually fight with other regional kings to takeover the highst title of the land or even expand it's authority over it's neighboring provinces. By the way the emperor also administer other non Chrstian kings and Sultans under the title of King of Kings of Ethiopia in a confedartion style of administration. These semi-autonomous rulers administer their land as they wish but have a responsibility to pay annual tribute and contribute soldiers when the emperor requests for either defending the overall empire's territory or to crush rebellions or to expand into neighboring territories. Before 19th century (beginning of modern nation building) all wars in Horn of Africa is for expansions and domination so there is no clan who went to war for separations. So it's very impossible to assume Medri-Behari fought Abysinians for separation. Just like Shewans they will fight all their neighbours to dominate Abysinian/Ethiopian/Horn of African politics and with all possible ways even by aquiring modern weapons from Turks, Portuguese or Italians. Even the cushitic Wello & Yejju Oromos fought with Amharas and Tigrayans to expand their domination in northern Ethiopia and actually were successful for 86 years in dominating these tribes during Zemene Mesafint. To summerize: Bahre Negash province was equal to the other provinces like Shewa Province and have been part of Abysinia/Ethiopia's Solomonic dyansity until the establishment of Italian Eritrea in 1890. Before the expansion of Gragn Mohamed i.e. 1520s the lowland red sea area including coastal cities of Zeyla & Mitsewa were also administered by semi autonomous chiefs & sultans who were under the control of Axum and it's successors. However between 1574 and 1870s the sea was lost and was administered by Turkish's Habesh Eyalet province. To Merhawie - again the truth is there was no king of Medri Bahri recorded in history and again the fact is Shewa was more separate and Independent than anyother Abysinian provinces. Please look List of rulers of Shewa and as you can see in the list there were many kings of Shewa with Menelik II being the last one who elevated shewan Kings as king of kings by defeating all rival Abyssinians including Gojam's king Tekle Haymanot. If you assume there was king of Medri Bahri please let it be known by creating a list of rulers for it in wikipedia page similar to Shewan rulers (who claim solomonic decent) or also like the List of rulers of Welayta who had their own dynasity separate from solomonic Dynasity but today who are Ethiopian citizens. After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1!
