Guru and India related links[edit]

Hi, just saw your msg. and your edits to Guru - My understanding of why your edits were reverted is as follows: 1) As it is a controversial topic, substantial edits seem to be reverted almost immediately. The notice on Talk:Guru also hints at that. 2) As the article is quite large, what gets allowed as an addition becomes narrower in scope. I have seen that you have done a nice thing by trying to engage with the other editors by engaging in a discussion on Talk:Guru. I suggest that a week off from that particular article could be helpful in re-assessing if the content you add is a) appropriate; b) placed in suitable context; c) doesn't conflict with the content already present and imo, most importantly, d) is precise, to the point and helps in understanding the concept of Guru. I know the difficulties of editing that article as I found myself defending hoarse over my insertion of "Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu" sloka in the article. btw, I am inserting links that would be of interest to Indians. --Gurubrahma 10:19, 23 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, sorry no Indic fonts in my possession.

Thanks for your message and welcome to the hood. Yeah I know the page needs improving; will do it over the Christmas holidays.

Merge[edit]

Hi, sorry am in a hurry right now as I am caught up in some admin related issue regarding WP:3RR. however, have a look at the talkpages of both the articles where I made edits so that you get a hang of the process. If/When both the titles are acceptable, we should pitch in for the version that has more edits, editors and major history. In this case, The story of... is the correct title, so, that check is not required. I generally give a week before the merger, because it is adequate time for active editors who have the article on their watchlist to comment on the merge. (i.e. no need to contact each editor abt their comments, as it is likely to be an unproductive waste of time). Ping me if there are any further issues - will only be able to reply tomorrow. Let me know around Dec.20th if you need help with either the technicalities or the political subtleties of carrying out the merge. btw, impressive monitoring and finding of a duplicate article, I should say. --Gurubrahma 14:27, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your edit on my userpage[edit]

Hi, just noticed it. Thanks for the same. However, it is unnecessary, as Gurubrahma is one single word and hence such fixing is not required, it would automatically be sorted under G. For words like Rishi Kapoor, sorting is required if it is to be categorised by surname. --Gurubrahma 04:11, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, you're right ;-). It's kinda funny though, 'coz I thought that the s/w would be configured in such a way that it would not look at the namespaces, but I was wrong. Thank for the heads up. --Gurubrahma 09:50, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Tava/Tawa and India[edit]

Hi! No I'm afraid I haven't been to India, although I do sometimes eat Indian food, and if I could travel the world and money was no object it would certainly be on my list. An ancestor of mine did spend a lot of time in India though - he was a Sergeant in the British Army in the mid-19th century. But to get back on topic... I stumbled across Tava/Tawa because I live in the suburb of Tawa, New Zealand, and there was a link on a related article that went to Tawa, which is understandable. --LesleyW 11:50, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

South Asia[edit]

there was nobody to discuss with at the time. You can discuss now, if you like. There were two stubby articles covering an identical geographical area, so I merged them, trying to be clear in the differences on terminology. What are your objections? dab () 09:06, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Malwa FA[edit]

Hi Miljoshi! Thanks for your support on FA. Can you give some ideas about how I can shorten the article (e.g. what can I remove.) Cheers :) deeptrivia (talk) 16:28, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, Miljoshi. It will be great if we can have better copyright-free maps. Thanks a ton! deeptrivia (talk) 14:57, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Wow!! It's awesome! Very informative!! I wish something like this were available in English too. Would have been useful for everyone. Thanks! deeptrivia (talk) 15:27, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Cool!! I think I'll replace the current image with the zoomed in one! deeptrivia (talk) 15:45, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Miljoshi! Please go ahead and do it. I am pathetic at such things (evidence: the previous map.) Thanks! deeptrivia (talk) 15:56, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Rajput[edit]

well, I did. Civility didn't help, and short blocks only made the trolls more obstinate. I do think they are actually as dense as they appear. Please talk to FireFox (talk · contribs), he said he would handle the case. I am prepared to block DPS for any further violation of policy, if what he does isn't "disruption", I don't know what is. I won't be able to talk DPS into anything, since he regards me as a "whiteboy sucking up to muslims" now (in spite of the ten times or so that I repeated that I require both sides to cite their sources, but somehow he thinks it is biased to let Musilm editors even near the article). regards, dab () 18:24, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

thanks, Miljoshi. I'm quite fine, I will take a break from the trolls before I get agitated. The community is able to neutralize these things, and if I get really annoyed, I'll file an RfAr, which would without doubt result in bans on DPS, Jimbo has banned users over much lighter cases of incivility and obstinance. Could you do me a favour and watch Hare Krishna, Gouranga (or generally DPS' contributions)? He seems to be taking to wikistalking now, reverting my edits to unrelated articles. dab () 13:41, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I know. Sometimes you have to spend time defending WP as well. It takes some faith in the project to believe this is time well spent. I have some such belief left, and I will file an RfAr. This is time consuming, but it can be effective. "WikiSchool" will not work for editors who are convinced they know better, or who are not interested in being nice. Others are rarely a problem, you point out the problems, and they are willing to learn and discuss. Not so the trolls, and these won't attend "WikiSchool" willingly. dab () 17:42, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Cartographer stubs[edit]

There isn't a cartographer specific stub at present. {{Cartography-stub}} has been around for a little over a month, and it would appropriate to place it on stub articles of cartographers until a cartographer stub were to be created. Under the usual proceedures of the stub sorting project that wouldn't be until there were at least 60 stubs of cartographers. Caerwine Caerwhine 16:26, 24 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

ņ ṇ[edit]

yes, ņ has a cedilla and is used in Latvian, while ṇ (underdot) is used in IAST (and other systems). dab () 14:01, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for the Panini update! Note that you may put entire words within {{IAST}}: Use {{IAST|Pāṇini}}, not Pā{{IAST|ṇ}}ini: the template has a double function, it helps rendering the correct glyphs in broken browsers, but it also marks Sanskrit words; you may even put words with IAST transcriptions that have no diacritics in the template, note e.g. {{IAST|Kena}} on Upanishad. dab () 14:53, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If you feel like doing more IASTification, there is Atharvaveda which badly needs it; I just spent too much time on Upanishad, so I don't think I will do it anytime soon. regards, dab () 12:27, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

RfD[edit]

This page contains a list of all the deletion categories, but it doesn't look like Rumsey and Lucas can go into any of them. In such cases, a useful practice is to add a note about the *fD on the talk page of a relevant high level article like Cartography. Tintin 14:39, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hindu-Arabic numerals[edit]

Hi! User:RN moved the article to Arabic numerals despite 28 votes favoring the title "Hindu-Arabic numerals" and only 17 favoring "Arabic numerals." He argues that if we don't count voters with less that 150 (or sth like that) edits, only 56% voters "support changing the title to Hindu-Arabic numerals", while at least 60% support votes are required. However, it was agreed between all parties in the beginning of the vote that the proposal is to move the article to "Arabic numerals" from "Hindu-Arabic numerals." It was also agreed (though I thought it was very unfair) that:

  • Those opposing the move have the advantage that it won't be moved unless there's a 60% majority
  • Those supporting the move have the advantage that the person proposing the move can do the *short* opening statement.
  • For all the rest of the voting procedure both parties are equal. (quoting Francis Schonken from 21:04, 18 December 2005 (UTC))[reply]

I would definitely have preferred it the other way round, since I think an opening statement makes a HUGE difference, since many people just read the opening statement and understandably don't bother with the discussion below the votes. The present situation was accepted with the agreement that the article will be moved to "Arabic numerals" only if more than 60% voters favored that title. Thus, only 40% oppose votes were sufficient to retain the title "Hindu-Arabic numerals." In the present situation (with over 60% voters opposing the change), I find the move to "Arabic numerals" ridiculous, besides being completely unjust and unfair. Your comments will be appreciated. deeptrivia (talk) 05:11, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Happy New Year[edit]

Hi Miljoshi, best wishes for a happy new year. I am sorry for not acknowledging your comments on my talkpage as I have been busy off-wikipedia and would be so for the next one month. My activities are now primarily restricted to updating DYK. If you create a new article, suggest it at Template talk:Did you know. I have finally voted for Malwa but decided not to step in the Rajput issue, at least for now. Keep up the good work. --Gurubrahma 05:48, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

IAST[edit]

hi Mil -- I really appreciate your IAST efforts! However, you are maybe carried away a little bit now: It is perfectly alright to have spellings Vishnu or Brihaspati in an English text; we should be careful to have IAST when introducing or disussing a Sanskrit term, but it is alright to use anglicizations when just referring to a god or person without discussing the term itself. Otherwise, we will have too much bother getting everything right (for example, note it is Bṛhaspati, not Brīhaspati. You also ended up with ṛugveda for ṛgveda (and others, I'll review when I have time). IAST is important when we have to be exact, but it is time-consuming and error prone, so I would really only use it when there is a point. As a rule, I would typeset IAST terms in italics, to emphasize that we are discussing a Sanskrit term, and not just an anglicized Sanskrit name. best regards, dab () 13:50, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

btw, the inquiry about the capital glyphs is not stupid at all; it took me some time to collect them, and I keep them at User:Dbachmann/sandbox:
Ā Ī Ū Ṇ Ṅ Ñ Ṣ Ś Ḍ Ṭ Ṛ Ṝ (the Ṇ Ṅ Ñ Ḍ Ṭ Ṝ glyphs are only useful for Paninean contexts, where the convention is to typeset the IT sounds as capital letters).

Hi, Mil

First of all thanks so much for the gujarat districts map, just this week I was looking for it. I would like to say two things about it.

  • I wonder where you got the outlined image of all districts, did you make it yourself?
  • I would very much like to see higlighted map for each district without any text, like in commons:Category:Indian states and union territories (the purple version). I would greatly appreciate if you create a version for each district. I want to use it on gujarati wikipedia. If you are not interested then I will do it myself but you are probably a better person for this task.

Thanks again. --Spundun 21:30, 1 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure about this template; Usually, we put warning templates on articles that are somehow unfinished; we don't need templates telling people that the article is fine, usually. Maybe we should, rather, have a template saying

parts of this article use the ITRANS transliteration of Sanskrit, and should be converted to IAST.

(like the note that used to be on Atharvaveda). {{IndicText}} is there to warn people with broken browsers; as soon as browsers improve, I hope we will be able to scrap it. It is not recommendable to plaster articles with warnings "this article contains this or that" (I mean, hell, people can read the article just like they can read the template ;) Maybe we could have one similar to {{IPA notice}}, if you really think article should be grouped as "containing IAST".

Talking of Sanskrit spellings, what about a {{Devanagari}}, replacing the generic {{Unicode}} for Devanagari strings? While I try to minimize template clutter, I do think it is very useful to tag texts, not just for rendering and mouse-over information, but also for machine readability (compare also {{PIE}}, and I'll probably create others). regards, dab () 10:29, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Happy 2006[edit]

Thanks for the new year's wishes — wishing you the very best as well. Your district maps of Gujarat and Chhattisgarh are great; if you are inspired to create them for other states (Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu), it would be quite a contribution.

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about Fielding Lucas Jr, Anthony Finely, et al.

Hi Miljoshi, thanks a ton for the moniker. In future, you may want to revise the existing files as it would lead to less work on my side in deleting older files (like the test one I created). And btw, your time-to-Wikipedia (ala time-to-market) has been pretty fast and I feel honoured in giving you the exceptional newcomer award. Doubly thrilled, as I initiated you into the world of India related links :) You may want to move the award to your Userpage if you wish so. --Gurubrahma 10:23, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yo,

I'll be much obliged if you could have a look at Patel's article if/when convenient, and scribe his name in Gujarati and/or Hindi using the Indic fonts. I think it requires the same arrangement as with Mahatma Gandhi's article, and I don't know how to use the fonts, while you've done good with both Gujarati and Hindi.

Map of Bangladesh[edit]

Hi, thanks for the map. The map page says you are the creator, so could you improve some details? For example, the map shows Myanmar as Burma. This has change 16 years ago. Also, you show rail/road links, but don't provide a legend for which symbols/lines refer to which. Please change the map to reflect these corrections. Thanks. --Ragib 03:44, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AP Maps[edit]

You did a beautiful job on Image:Map AP dist all shaded.png. When I saw Image:Nizamabad.jpg it was really ugly in comparison and it's only fair use and unsourced at that. I was wonderinf if you had a copy of your map without any of the districts colored so that we could do idenfiter maps highlighting each state. If you do that'd be great and what program did you use? Thanks. gren グレン 11:43, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
