Re: Native Americans

Hello, I recieved your message regarding your concerns over the Native American category. I initially added a few Canadian Natives to the category Native Americans, but I was told that it was not Wikipedia policy to do so as Canadian Natives are not "Americans" in the sense of being part of the United States. The Canadian Native peoples are placed under the categories of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis, and those categories are placed in the supercatagory of Indigenous Peoples of North America. Since it is not Wikipedia policy to place Canadian Natives into the Native American category on the basis that they are not from the United States, it would seem just as inappropriate to place Native South Americans in the Native American category.

I'm just trying to follow established Wikipedia policy. Perhaps you should take your concerns over the issue to Talk:Native Americans, and discuss it there. I hope this message reaches you as I am new to using the talk pages.

South Gloucestershire

Though South Gloucestershire . is these days only a Local Government area, the article does also contain a little on the Parliamentary area. I've redirected your new title for the parliamentary constituency article back into the Local Gov. one for the time being - rather than just have a 'redlink'. Depute

I see you "corrected" "depute" as a spelling error on the Mikey Aziz page. In actual fact, "depute" is not a typo for "deputy", but the correct form in Scotland. Private Eye once made this mistake by pointing out a school that was advertising for a "depute headmaster". In fact this is perfectly good usage in Scottish English, so Private Eye itself was wrong!

Thanks for tidying up after my work on former MPs

Thanks for your good work tidying up and improving the stubs I had been creating for former MPs ... especially for sorting out the big cut-and-paste error I had made in Thomas Henry Swain. (red face time)

I have been working on these former MPs and former constituencies for a few weeks, and had been surprised how few people seemed to be interested in editing them, so it's been great to find your eagle-eye deployed. Thanks!

As EurekaLott mentioned when closing your reopened CFD discussion, the debate has closed with a rename result. The problem is that the work of actually doing the renames is horridly backlogged. We used to have an automated bot that would do most of the work, but the bot died a month or so ago, and the bot's owner in unavailible. So the moves are currently backing up. If you want to help, you could begin the work yourself for this move in particular, since it's of importance to you. All except for the last step of the move can be done without access to admin abilities: Copy the data of the actual category entry into a new category at the new name, then one by one recategorize all the entries (this is where the bot helped). Finally, in the Working section of the CFD page, move the listing down to the last section once all are moved and an admin will perform the delete on the old category. Your comments on the Adrian Hilton article are most interesting. Like you I am not convinced of its neutrality and reckon it was written either buy a close friend of Mr Hilton or by Hilton himself.

The author is rather disingenuous in referring to the objections to his parliamentary ambitions being based solely on the articles he wrote for The Spectator, for they are an accurate distillation of the book on the EU which Hilton makes so much of.

Interestingly, for one who is by no means backward in coming forward, Hilton does not tell us which venerable institute of learning awarded him his degrees

Good to see you've been active with the template already!! - I think we'll need a bit of time to iron out exactly what will work best - for example with regard to Malcom Wicks - his seat was basically re-classified, so 'second period in office' could be misconstrued (it implies to me that he had a period out of office which is untrue) - perhaps in these early stages we should verge on the side of simplicity and only apply secondary constituencies to those MPs who have changed seats geographically, not merely technically - what do you think? It would be great to build an Infobox template that would work well for every UK MP - that's what I believe we should aim for... have a lovely weekend! Petesmiles 13:28, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

It is not vandalism. From Wikipedia:Guide to deletion#Closure:

If you think that an article was wrongly deleted, you can recreate the article. If you do decide to recreate it, pay careful attention to the reasons that were proffered for deletion. Overcome the objections, and show that your new, improved work meets Wikipedia article policies. It can help to write down the reasons you think the article belongs on Wikipedia on the article's discussion page. If you manage to improve on the earlier version of the article and overcome its (perceived) shortcomings, the new article cannot be speedily deleted, and any attempt to remove it again must be settled before the community, on AFD.

I don't have strong opinions about this article, and in its original re-created form it was horribly POV. I just think that a claim to greater notability has now been asserted, due to having a prominent position at a very young age and much more info has been added, so it is not the same page and has made efforts to overcome objections.

It is unfortunate that we have not been able to agree criteria for local politicians. It strikes me as odd that dozens of one-sentence articles on Liverpool and Manchester City Councillors survived AfD simply because being a councillor was considered notable, yet a full article asserting a greater claim was deleted. He is now Mayor of High Wycombe and the youngest-ever, and 31 is a notable age to be so in any borough. Anyway, the outcome of the deletion page was that the subject and creator had requested deletion, but this is not the case as can be seen on his talk page. Mtiedemann 10:57, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

He has a ceremonial post with no mayoral powers, hence he is not a mayor. That the ceremonial post is called "mayor" doesn't make him one anymore than if the ceremonial post was called "President of the US" it would make him that. In the UK, that is what being the Mayor or Lord Mayor means, excepting the recent creation of directly-elected mayors in London and a few other districts. Given that this system has been in place for centuries, I don't think the title 'Mayor' for a UK civic mayor can be fairly challenged as less worthy than, say, a US City Mayor in a more recent political system. It is still an important position in the UK, in terms of rank, etiquette, etc. the highest-ranked person in an area unless the monarch is visiting. The chairing of meetings and other roles of civic mayors are not ceremonial. There are other articles on Lord mayors of London or other ceremonial mayors in the UK with little other info that have survived AfD.

And the assertion of notability is that he is a) a councillor, b) an office-holder as a cabinet member and mayor, c) holds other offices and d) the youngest-ever holder of the Mayoralty of High Wycombe, a long-standing position. I don't assert that these should lead to the page surviving, I just state, again, that this should be tested through AFD and not by a single editor. Wouldn't it be more reasonable to have this discussion on the article's talk page (with an article to talk about) or on AFD? Mtiedemann 12:10, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

If he is noteable, then he has done something noteable. Having a list of titles is very British, but meaningless. There are babies with titles in Britain - they are not noteable. How much money did he spend in his last campaign? What platform did he run on? Who was his opponet? What were the issues in the race? What changes has he made since elected? What is the address of his office? What are his priorities now that he is in power? Can you see how ridiculous all this is? He has less power than a local boy scout leader in America. Not noteable. Sadly, in my opinion, there are hundreds of articles for people born to British titles; there are even articles for the heirs apparent of titles which survive AfD and are considered notable because of who their parents are. Hayday, on the other hand, has a direct role in people's lives (which you can summarise by the word 'power', inappropriate as British local government has shared power, rather than individual power), indeed more than they do, under the UK system, whatever you think of it, because he is an elected politician with a historic and still-relevant role in legislation at a local level. It may be British, I am not but I recognise how the local government system works and how mayors have a role in it - and how hard it is to become one at the age of 31, harder than if it were an elected position.

I am not going to argue on and on about this, I just reassert my point that this discussion should include others and be in a relevant place to gauge opinion about what makes local politicans notable or not, in a UK context. Mtiedemann 14:15, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Seem fine to me, thanks. Perhaps a more visible logo in the photo (or even the logo itself) would be an improvement as it's probably the only widely-recognised logo for a UK uni, but the building shot is quirky. Mtiedemann 19:33, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

The problem with the logo is that it is fair use, ceratinly if we could use it, it would be my preference! I think all regional centres are identical architectually, although associating the OU with a building seems a very odd idea indeed Fasach Nua 21:31, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
