Username concern

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia!

I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and I am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

Let me reassure you that my writing here means I don't think your username is grossly, blatantly, or obviously inappropriate; such names get reported straight to Wikipedia:Usernames for administrator attention or blocked on sight. This is more a case where opinions might differ, and it would be good to reach some consensus — either here or at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User names. So I look forward to a friendly discussion, and to enjoying your continued participation on Wikipedia. Thank you. --KerotanLeave Me a Message Have a nice day :) 07:36, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

Football (soccer) officials userbox

Hi. The userbox at your test page looks fine. Bear in mind though that the only notable Occupation as far as WikiProject Football is concerned is Referee (assistant refereeship is a progression, and a by-product, of the person's notable activities as a referee. Fourth official activities are of a similar nature). Also, not all current referees, and certainly not past referees, are or were professional, and therefore had (or indeed currently have) another paid occupation. You would need to clarify which context of the word "Occupation" you are referring to - I would suggest "Other occupation" as a better description.

Football match officials operate at levels. However, at each level there is a split level. From, say, Conference referee you would gain promotion to the Football League as an assistant referee, spend many years doing just that, with maybe a promotion to Premier League assistant if lucky. Premier League assistant referees can then be appointed by UEFA to be assistants in European competition or friendlies, and by FIFA as assistants in other International matches.

For outstanding officials, the progression would then be from Football League assistant ref to FL referee, and from Premiership assistant to full FAPL referee. Once an assistant makes the step up, they cease to operate in the UEFA or FIFA lists as assistants, and must await their chance of selection as a referee on those International lists.

A current interesting article (to me) is Philip Sharp (referee). As you will see, he has been a FIFA official for over ten years now, yet has not refereed a single Football League or Premier League match in his life. How is this possible? How can he be notable if he has never refereed at the very top level?

As what you might call a "specialist assistant", he has experienced situations and events that most fully-operational referees would give their right arms for - a European Championships finals, two World Cup finals competitions including the 2002 World Cup Final itself, and an Olympic Games Football Tournament (not to mention myriad International Club Competition appointments). Being now 43 years old, it is unlikely that he will ever make the grade as a fully-fledged referee at the very top. Yet he has undoubted supreme notability qualification through his International work alone.

I for one would definitely use the infobox if it were accepted as a template. Let me know how you progress with this.

I hope this has given you some insight, and if you need more specific info, please get in touch. Best wishes. Ref (chew)(do) 22:03, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Looks good to me. I can't guarantee when I will start adding it to existing articles, but when I next contribute a new article, or carry out a major expansion/overhaul of an existing article, I will add the userbox. Well done. Ref (chew)(do) 19:26, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Template changes to WP:FOOTY assessment

Hi Nanonic, just noticed your changes to the assessment template;thanks for these! Not sure that FL is picked up by the WP1.0 assessment bot though - do you know if it does? It doesn't appear at all in Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Statistics so I wonder if articles rated in this way are actually being excluded from the process? (I don't know the answer) Paulbrock (talk) 20:30, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi Paul, I'm not 100% sure either although there is currently a campaign ongoing to get them included (as FA's are only supposed to cover articles). However, what I do know is that since the introduction of both FL and List classes; people have begun to use them more and more which means articles get removed from the WP1.0 statistics for the project (see recent bot log for WP:WPF). What I will do is to wait until the next bot run, and if all FL's are dropped off or ignored then I'll edit the template to dupe cat them - so that a FL is added to cat:FL and cat:FA for counting whilst leaving the infrastructure there for when they're picked up properly. Thanks for the warning! Nanonic (talk) 21:15, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
Change requested to lump FA's and FL's together for the time being. Nanonic (talk) 22:35, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject Sheffield Wednesday new article bot

Sorry to bother you again, but it seems that the bot ran at around 18:15, but has not produced a log for WPSWFC. Is there another problem with the code that I have entered, or is there a deadline for new entries? (I added SheffieldWednesday to the master list at about 14:00) Cheers, Dan1980 (talk | stalk) 19:04, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

It's no probs, the thing annoyed me like this when I started using it too. It's hard to figure out exactly when the bot began it's run today - it did one archive run at 09:00-10:00 and then again at 1354-1546 before posting results from 15:47-18:20 and then one last stray at 19:14. From looking at this I would imagine the bot was compiled (got it's ruleset and began it's work) just before you added your rules to the master (possibly was compiled around 13:30.. maybe). Don't worry though as it'll post results tomorrow no doubt and in some cases (rarely) it posts results from the previous day too. Since your set is the last in the list, you should expect your results to be posted around 18:20 each day (at the end of the current run) so keep your fingers crossed! I'll have a look at the log when it's posted to see if I can find anything to tweak. Nanonic (talk) 20:20, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Hey Nanonic, thanks for your note. A couple of little grammar/MOS things but otherwise, go for it..

  • As per MOS, keep numbers below 10 as text.
  • "one of it's children" should be "one of its children".

But otherwise, a good advert for the project. Nice work. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:22, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject Iran football assessment

Do you have any opposition to the project having assessment? It will work the same way as any other football country wikiproject, and follows WP:FOOTY's guidelines for sub-project assessment. The request has been knocked back because of your comments, so since I have everything ready I am asking you to post on Template talk:Football page and say whether you have opposition or not. This shouldn't have been knocked back in the first place as I had everything ready so I could start assessment. —Borgardetalk 03:23, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Football portals

Hey Nanonic, I was looking at the code that allows the project banner to show the English football portal when England=yes is shown, and well, it is quite easy to add USA Soccer, and German football as well for when USA=yes or Germany=yes. The only problem is that it would be hierarchically driven, so if England=yes,German=yes, and USA=yes are all on, then English football portal will show. And then it's just up to the order of the otehr two to determine which one is more 'important'. This is just something I've been looking at, I can write up some code and show you if you like. —Borgardetalk 01:28, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Malmesbury article

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give [[:Malmesbury, Wiltshire]] a different title by copying its content and pasting it into Malmesbury. This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the [[Help:Moving a page|"Move" tab]] at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. Nanonic (talk) 14:19, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

If you had looked through the edit summaries I placed on the page,

or looked at the history of the page Malmesbury, then you would have noted that someone moved the article about the town to create a disambiguation page to link to a series of articles about the town. Much as though I dislike Cut & Paste options, it was the most appropriate in this case. I have hence deleted your tag to move the page back to Malmesbury, Wiltshire. Fleming Way construction 1967.jpg - picture information is incorrect.

Hi

On the page History of Swindon, the image showing the construction of Fleming Way and the main shopping area of the Parade in 1967 has the wrong information. If you click on that image in the page, the description reads: "The new Swindon takes shape - One of the first new developments in the town centre in the 1960's was the construction of Fleming Way and the Parade shopping centre which linked this road with Bridge Street & Regent Street. At the Fleming Way end was the Bon Marche department store [later Debenhams] with a hotel development above [Wiltshire Hotel]."

The development above was an office block, not the Wiltshire Hotel; the hotel is located behind that building and you can see in the photo that the hotel has not been built yet.

Please could you correct the photo description to say it's an office block (now disused), not a hotel.

Cheers. :) TurboForce (talk) 11:43, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Also, since you are involved in the discussion on the other side of the argument, good Wikiquette would be to leave it to other, less involved editors to judge whether a comment constitutes an attack. Because let's be honest here for a moment: The fact that you don't disagree with the direction of my argument (ie. keep) did play at least a minor role in your misreading of my comment as a personal attack. --78.35.245.253 (talk) 14:03, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Emnico-Technologies.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Emnico-Technologies.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:10, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. A tag has been placed on User:Nanonic/NF vs MU news sources requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football-united-wary-of-big-ron-effect-1069133.html. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Refdesk star

The Original Barnstar
For answering my obscure question about a TV show on Refdesk/Entertainment, very quickly, very nicely, and very accurately. I can see you've helped lots of others on refdesk, but I doubt many of them know the technicalities of saying thanks with a barnstar; I'm sure they'd join me in presenting you with this award. 81.108.18.234 (talk) 18:49, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
