Your proposed version is very good and a major improvement on the previous version. Intro sentence should include additional causes, something along the lines of "as well as certain drugs, chemotherapy and certain toxic chemicals".
So the causes needs expanded in the intro. Alcohol is a well known cause of peripheral neuropathy for example, corticosteroids (I think as well?), certain antibiotics and other drugs, for example.
