TC Reports

Hello, you know the reports by Jack Beven you got a while back. The southern hemisphere ones only reach up to around May 1996. The reports by Gary Padgett date back to October 1997, but no further. There is a hole missing between May 1996 and Oct 1997. Do you have any info you know of that is in between these dates??? I'm finding info for Cyclone Justin at the moment. Image deletion

I posted the image of the Citizens Rule Book, which you recently deleted. I understand that the copyright is questionable, but my understanding is that book covers are "fair use" and can be posted. The cover image is available on several websites and I cited the site that I copied it from. What can I do to make sure the image meets the standards of the Commons? Hi, you delted Qemu_win_linux.png. It was a screenshot taken by myself and as I declared in the copyright notice I've relaeased to public domain. So now the obcious question, why did you delete it? Qemu has no copyright on screenshots and there are other screenshots of qemu in other languages. SO what was wrong?

I don't think there's a way to get free access to ProQuest. However, most large libraries and university libraries will have access to it, or will have the actual microfilm. Commons question

I just uploaded the image File:Pre Karen ET storm.jpg, but I had a problem regarding the strength. Right now, we only have categories for SSHS scale, TD's, TS's, SS's, and ST's, so I put it under unknown strength. Should we create a category for extratropical/remnants of storms? I don't know what it would be called, but images of precursor tropical waves, extratropical storms becoming subtropical (like Perfect Storm or Karen), or a pic of the remnants of a storm currently have no category. I know they are not technically tropical cyclones, but for organization purposes should we group nontropical storms that at one point were tropical with the tropical storms? Lehigh University trivia reversion

hi, The thing I pasted was all true. There was a student at the university, an act was passed by congress and it is concurrent today. Why is it nonsense? I did not post it on the main web page for the university because honestly I think it is trivia and not important to the university in itself. If you think that it should not be the first piece of trivia then you could have lowered it but why delete it? It was not vandalism. Honestly I think it was a lot more substantiative than a lot of the other so called "trivia" on the page...

Foggathorpe

I created an article stub about Foggathorpe using the small amount of information I could find. Yesterday 81.174.167.207 (obviously not experienced in editing WP) took the trouble to put an amendment onto the article. You then accused him/her of adding nonsense to Wikipedia with an offputting message on his/her talk page.

I am interested to know whether my original assertion about Foggathorpe's amenities is correct or not – and I will investigate further. Since you seem to be so sure that 81.174.167.207's contribution is "nonsense", please let me know what information you have about Foggathorpe.

I also think it's worth mentioning that, even though you may not have meant it, your message to 81.174.167.207 came across as high-handed, inappropriate and rather insulting. I very much doubt if this person is a vandal, as your message implies – I think it is more likely that this is somebody with local knowledge who has discovered WP and taken the trouble to try to correct it. Such people can help to make WP more reliable and should be encouraged.

You apparently deleted my uploaded file :Image:Nyhus Pappa 04.jpg because of a copyvio book scan. This file was made by me as the author, illustrator and graphic designer of this Norwegian children's book, and I consider the image in low resolution to be of no violation against copyright laws of the publishing house. Winchester Model 70

I think if you compare the two articles, what you will find is that I did not delete material, but rather re-organized the existeing material. I created two new subheadings, one on Law Enforcment Use and the other on Military Use of the Model 70. Additionally, I organized the existing material into the three groups that Winchester Model 70s are normally grouped into: 1) rifles maufactured from 1936 through 1963, 2) from 1964 through 1991 and 3) 1992 through 2006. I added and deleted abit as I did that, but I deleted sparingly (for the most part the article is quite accurate) and added only here and there. I organized the article to more closely follow the manufacturing history of the Rifleman's Rifle. Oh, I also added a number of links for the cartridges listed.

The information in the article (and my reorganization) is easily referenced in The Rifleman's Rifle: Winchester's Model 70, 1936–1963 by Roger C. Rule; History of Winchester Firearms by Dean K. Boorman or The Complete Book of Winchester's Model 70: The Rifleman's rifle, Peterson Publishing.

Based on that, please restore my work. Thanks.

You have inmumerable track images loaded for various Tropical Cyclones and one of them is for Tropical cyclone MALA. Is there a correction between the Tropical Cyclone winds and central minimum pressure ? The wind speed for MALA is 125 Knots, however, the minimum pressure shown for MALA is 954 mbars. Orphaned image

The image has been orphaned i have sought advice from another user who is an administrator. They have suggested that the fair use claim was stretching the boundries a bit too far. They suggested the removal of the image from the article. As the image is not bieng used in any article and the fair use claim has now been deemed unsuitable by another administrator then the image must be removed as soon as posible. the reason I changed descendents to anticendents was that the claim is that all current species are derived from those on the ark, I changed the word before to during for stylistic reasons, as "before" doesn't specify how long before and until how long after they were supposedly housed.

Orphaned fair use image (Image:NME MarilynManson.jpg)

Cheers for bringing to my attention the orphaned Manson image, I uploaded it some time ago and added it to the Marilyn Manson artice; I feel that an artiste being on the cover of NME is part of their story. It's all presumable because I rate NME as the UK's premier magazine for Rock/Indie music, however I'm not sure that this opinion is universal. Again thanks for bringing it to my attention. You claim File:Samraimi.jpg is easily-replacable with a free-use image. This is funny, because you don't seem to be able to replace it with one. Have you tried to find a free one? I have and wasn't successful. You left me a note about the fair-use eligibility of Image:Michaelcatonjonespromo.jpg. I'm not sure how easily this could be replaced, or how "a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created". I'm not an FU expert, but I was under the impression that promotional / publicity shots of people could be used under exactly these circumstances. He's not all that well known and probably doesn't live next door to a shutterbug wikipedian, so I think the image should be OK. No? If this is the bar for image deletion then 90% of the images on WP are going to have to go which kinda goes against the point of having FU in the first place. It's such a subjective rule to have to interpret, and no doubt leads to well intentioned image patrollers like yourself getting plenty of grief from well intentioned image uploaders. If the office commanded all {{promotional}} images were wikiana non grata, fair enough, if it's left to us 'pedians to decide than I'd be a lot happier if there was a clear, joined up policy rather than disagreement and the talk pages of good souls like yourself turning into the image complaints department. "An image of a living person that merely shows what they look like" sounds to me like the definition of "photograph", and speaking from the perspective of a WP:WPBIO member it's generally held to be desirable to have one in an article. I don't see "An image of a city / flower / monkey that merely shows what it looks like" in the guideline. You obviously know more about this than me, but like I say I'd be more comfortable if FU eligibility was crystallized in clear policy rather than slightly confused guidelines. yes, that and a few other's were removed from the article page. I hadn't gone and deleted them because I was currently fighting for their re-inclusion. However it was agreed that most of them should be removed. There is however still a disagreement about the use of four images, LuxuryBall.jpg, JohtoPokeballs.gif, PremiereBall.jpg, and Masterball.jpg. I'm not sure if it was just boilerplate you left on my talk page. But if you would like to review the info at Talk:Poké Ball I'd appreciate it. It was originally a disagreement between myself and another editor, I then sought outside opinion by posting at WT:FUC, but felt by the two people who bothered responding, that they may have gotten confused about what i was specifically trying to include. We can't round up to the nearest mph because we do not know how accurate the measurements were (was it 115 kt or 116 kt) – also, saying that Nora (or any other storm in the same situation) is 130 mph implies that it was under the 131 mph threshold... it's something to bug the NHC about, IMO. That image

I didn't mention it at RFA, but the image I made with your inspiration also because a picture of the day at Earth Observatory [3], so obviously you had a good idea. So, thanks.

On the point about track density, I know, but chose to do it with all of them. Since the plotting approach I took was to put the more intense colors on top, I was going more for showing where the worst storms occurred rather than emphasizing individual tracks. I figured given that, plotting all of the data probably wasn't going to hurt much (even if the old data was poorly constrained in intensity). On second thoughts I've sorted this mess out. I've moved the sandbox to article and reinstated the redirect. I apologize for the Boeing 767 edit. I was just doing that for readability and used the wrong edit summary. As for switching hard-code to the template, the advantages are discussed on the templates page, here and respective talk page here. The big advantage is, if there become more sources in the future, it is easy to switch to a multicolumn format. Also, of course, since it is one universal, protected template, if it is decided all the formats for notes should be changed, it is very easy to make the change universally. Hi. May I suggest you archive your talk page sometime today, as it is almost 100 sections long, potentially currently one of the longest talk pages on wiki. Yahoo News may be a poor place to link to but the underlying story was real and was produced by a reliable news source, so the deadlink is irrelevant. If all else fails you should keep the reference data but drop the actual link.

That's ridiculous: I could claim anything I like, make up a fake Yahoo News link as my reference, and keep my false information by pretending it's merely an expired link and not a false one. It's really not that hard to find an alternate source for AP articles. I was drawn here by the one you deleted regarding Harry Reid.[6] Google finds this, which lists several blog sources which include excerpts. Googling on any of those excerpts brings you to originals from USA Today & the SF Chronicle[7]. Different headline, same content, as is common with wire service stories. So, in fact, the dead link was quite useful. While you may not wish to take the effort to find an alternate source, at least don't purge the information required for others to do so. Yahoo News tends to carry newswire and syndicated content, the source and date of which is usually given in the URL – e.g. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061221/ap_on_re_us/marines_haditha is an Associated Press story of 21 December 2006 (reverse date format). Therefore if you have access to the AP database, or an external archive such as Factiva, ProQuest or Lexis-Nexis, you can almost always find the article, plus of course any other publications that have run the same piece. -- ChrisO 01:03, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Australian category scales

I'm quite concerned about using the SSHS category used for the Template:Infobox hurricane small template for Australian cyclones. It's not the official scale used, and the Bureau of Meteorology doesn't use it. There should definitely be an Australian category put in the template somewhere, using the data obtained from BOM. Just a thought about using the category number in the title. I was thinking of putting the cat number in brackets and in small letters. The official name for a cyclone is not "Category 4 Severe Tropical Cyclone George" but just "Severe Tropical Cyclone George". Putting the category number in front makes the title a little too long. My suggestion may look something like this.....

Hurricane Nina Newspaper Article

Hello, Nilfanion. I'm currently in a bit of a predicament, and I wonder if you can help me out. I'm currently working on an article for Hurricane Nina of 1957 and I'm searching for an infobox picture. Right now, I've found a damage pic from the hurricane, but it's on a newspaper (http://www.thehurricanearchive.com/Viewer.aspx?img=31125836&firstvisit=true&currentResult=2&currentPage=10), making it unusable. Hink thought of copying the whole article, then uploading it under fair use, but we're unsure if that'd work. Can you help find the best method to clearing this up? Regardless of how you got the File:Ejaculation sample.jpg removed. I thank you. I have watched the fiasco for months as basically one person stalled or subverted all reasonable attempts to make the page more appropriately encyclopedic.

I do ask, though, have any of those user's actions been actionable? The childish attempts to impede Wikipedia progress by Atom have left me fairly disgruntled towards the entire process. Time and time again he went against consensus to do what he wanted and slandered other people as religious zealots if they defied him. I have witnessed several things set forth by this user where he has attempted to deride the process and declare imminent domain for himself. At the time when I was involved with the discussions he literally tagged the discussion with a label saying it was against Wikipedia policy to discuss the image, threating action if you did so. Looking at the talk pages of users who came after me, he attempted to "welcome" them and cite rules on how they weren't allowed to edit the image out of the page, which always struck me as an attempt to impersonate an administrator. All in all, this user single handedly has disgusted me and possibly others at Wikipedia.

I am eager to see this user prevented from doing similar things in he future. He seems to have a reputation for doing such things, and it dumbfounds me to consider that this has been tolerated. If I have to charge against him in some WP:* process myself, I think I can now be motived to do so, but I have no idea where to start or how to formulate it in such a way as to not easily dismissed as personal grievance. Atom has intentionally moved against the Wikipedia process and users in the pursuit of a personal agenda, and I feel, damaging Wikipedia and its reputation in the process. At this point, I would have to ask what actions can be taken now to prevent Atom from continuing to engage in his edit waring. Over the weekend the image was restored, and in a much predictable way, Atom reverted the edits to the page and reinserted his pet image, declaring consensus for himself. At this point, it strikes me strongly that he is in violation of WP:3RR, specifically 3RR_is_not_an_entitlement in that his persistent reverts and unwillingness to compromise show an unwillingness to actually abide by the rules and procedures of Wikipedia unless that serve his own end. For the record, he does not technically break the 3RR directly, instead spreading them out once or twice a day, and having other "pet" Wikipedians do it for him if necessary.

Note: Atom typically counts reversions by outside editors of Anonymous IP edits that remove the picture outright as votes for consensus in his favor.

Re:Imagery

Thanks for the posts. My replies:

1. gif may not necessarily be deleted due to licensing concerns -- specifically, what sort of licencing concerns are there?
2. I would disagree with keeping gifs even though the quality hasn't changed. There is a specific category (commons:Category:Images with inappropriate GIF format) for such images in commons.
3. Regarding storage concerns: I've never come across any concerns about wikipedia running out of space if a duplicate is 'deleted'. I know deleted media are archived but that would apply to all deleted images. IMO, the same concern should apply to newly created vector graphics.
4. As for uploading the en version of the image to commons:, I don't know how useful it will be. That's why I also created a blank image for purposes of localisation into respective wikipedias. There's no set policy in commons on text in images.
5. Thanks for the info on plain svg vs inkscape svg. Quite a useful tip. :)

About 50 cyclone shelters now collapsible anytime

LAXMIPUR, June 29:—More than 50 cyclone shelters are now collapsible in Laxmipur and the may cause havoc at any moment. One of them already has collapsed and another one collapsible. The cyclone shelters were built in 1972 to 1974 and since then there has been almost no repair nor any white washing done on them.

As a result, majority portion of plasters and in some of them ce­ment. Concrete (CC) works are dismantling resulting in iron rods in them keep hanging since long.

The rods are already worn out and have become at most distem­pered. In such conditions the people of the shelter areas remain always in fear that the shelters may col­lapse and play havoc at any mo­ment.

In such conditions prevail in the coming monsoon no sensible person will enter these shelters for safety. Rather the shelters have became headache for the people of these areas some elite and many com­moners of the areas viewed.

The cyclone shelters are located at various coastal areas under Ramgati Sadar and Raipur upazilas like Matir hat, Char Kalkini, Char Alexander and Char Falcon of un­der Ramgati upazila.

About ten (10) cyclone shelters in Sebagram, Raghunathpur, Barakheri have already collapsed and gone into the Meghna river. The Matirhat Cyclone Shelter is also on the berse of collapse.

If such collapse occurs a pri­mary school, and many shops in the vicinity of the shelter may also collapse, initiating life risks.

In addition more 15 cyclone shelters on the coast of the Meghna river under Sadar and Ramgati are also on the berse of collapsing. The other cyclone shel­ters in the interior of Sadar and Raipur upazilas have also become cracked as these were built under some political influence showing cyclone shelters cum school.

The cyclone shelters will be playing as death traps at the time of necessity instead of being used for safety viewed the elite of the locality.

On the other hand, the areas like Barakheri, Sebagram and Raghunathpur where the cyclone shelters collapsed long ago due to river erosion which are not rebuild as yet.

Moreover the Char Megha, South, North and Central Char Ramani Mohan where new char areas emerged later on, they have no Cyclone Shelters built up as yet.

As such the people of these char areas remain at risk of being washed away if any flood or cy­clone hit the places during coming monsoon. The people of the areas would urged the authority concerned to look into the matter before the situation goes out of control.
