Ordination of Bishops[edit]

Please refrain from changing the ordination of a bishop to consecration, unless it refers to a Catholic bishop prior to 1968 at the latest. The Second Vatican Council's document Christus Dominus (1965) refers to the "Order of Bishops". Prior to the council, bishops were for centuries not considered a separate order, but existed within the Order of Presbyters (priests). In 1968 the Pontificale Romanum was officially changed by Pope Paul VI and the Rite of Ordination of a Bishop was instituted. While there is a laying on of hands, chrismation of the head and consecration prayer in the rite there are also a laying on of hands and consecration prayers for deacons (but no chrismation) and presbyters (chrismation of the hands) and we rightly refer to them as ordinations. Wikipedia provides encyclopedic articles and they are to be accurate to the time period in which they correspond/describe. By putting in inaccurate, outdated, or terminology preferable to certain subgroups you are misleading people who use them as a reference. Farragutful (talk) 19:12, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

honorific prefix[edit]

Hi there. I see that you added "His Grace" before "The Most Reverend" to the article about John Roach (bishop). I'm not sure if this is a correct honorific prefix, because it creates a redlink, and the reference cite in the article doesn't support it. Could you please add a reference, and format your edit so it doesn't cause a redlink? Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 06:09, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct to be skeptical. The honorific "His Grace" in the Catholic Church is used by archbishops in the United Kingdom and Canada. (It is probably used by other Commonwealth countries in the UK, but I am less familiar with the others.) It is not used by archbishops in the United States, unless of course you are Archbishop Meyers in Newark who does use it. He is the only one, however. Archbishops who are not Cardinals use the honorific "His Excellency" like other bishops. Cardinals are referred to as "His Eminence", just as in other countries. Please stop adding "His Grace" to prelates not from the UK or Canada. It is incorrect. Elizium23 (talk) 06:45, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
