Renaming of 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup page[edit]

I notice that you moved the article for the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup to "2018 FIBA World Championship for Women", citing consistency as the criterion.

Only one problem: FIBA itself officially changed the name of the competition to "Women's Basketball World Cup" after the 2014 event. See, for example, the following:

Scrolling down to 2018 on FIBA's official events calendar reveals an entry for "2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup".
This FIBA press release, issued in 2014, explicitly calls the 2018 event a World Cup, and even directly states, "Formerly known as the FIBA World Championship for Women, 2018 will mark the first time that FIBA's flagship event for women's basketball is played under its new name."

When a competition undergoes a name change, the standard procedure is as follows:

Match the parent article with the current name of the competition. Any page for a post-change edition of the competition will have the new competition name.
For editions before the name change, keep the competition title as it existed at that time.

An example of how this works in Wikipedia is the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. This competition has had three names in its history:

The competition began in 2002 as the FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship.
Between the 2004 and 2006 editions, FIFA changed the maximum player age from 19 to 20. Accordingly, it became the FIFA U-20 Women's World Championship.
Finally, the name was changed to the current FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup for 2008.

Accordingly, articles for the first four individual tournaments are at 2002 FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship, 2004 FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship, 2006 FIFA U-20 Women's World Championship, and 2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, with all subsequent tournaments at "[Year] FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup".

Thanks for letting me know! I guess my confusion / error stems from the rules of the German Wikipedia where name changes of sports tournaments are generally ignored and the name is kept generic at all times ("Basketball World Championship for Women 2018"). No problem. In fact, you enlightened me about a difference between the English and German Wikipedias. When it comes to recurring sporting competitions, English strongly favors using the current event name for the parent article, but using historically accurate names for individual editions or seasons (even if they differ over time).
