December 2014 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2014 Newsletter Drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in November's Backlog Elimination Drive. Of the 43 people who signed up for this drive, 26 copy edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: The November Drive removed 26 requests from the Requests page and 509 articles from the {{copy edit}} backlog. We copy edited 83 articles tagged in the target months; July, August, and September 2013. Together with tag removals from articles unsuitable for copy editing, we eliminated July 2013 from the backlog and reduced August and September's tags to 61 and 70 respectively. As of 01:01, 1 December 2014 (UTC), the backlog stood at 1,974 articles, dipping below 2,000 for the first time in the Guild's history (see graph at right). Well done everyone! Blitz: The December Blitz will run from December 14–20 and will focus on articles related to Religion, in recognition of this month's religious holidays in much of the English-speaking world. Awards will be given out to everyone who copy edits at least one of the target articles. Sign up here! Hello. I don't object to the Sydney hostage story, because I think it has repercussions regarding Islamic State. However, in my opinion, this particular Thai royalty story isn't necessarily newsworthy for ITN. Pange lingua, WAB 33

Dear,

I have seen that you have removed the available recording of Bruckner's Pange lingua, WAB 33, which is put on YouTube, because you are afraid for possible copyright violation.

Be ensured that I will never put a reference to a YouTube recording before I have checked that there is no obvious copyright violation, but it can indeed not always be ascertained...

The aim for putting it was to let know it to readers who do not have a CD with the concerned motet.

@Meneerke bloem: The one from Concordia Choir seems just fine; since they've uploaded it themselves, there's no chance of a copyright violation. However, with that said, the link must go in an 'External links' section, under a new header at the bottom of the article. External links in the body of an article are almost never acceptable, so I'm going to keep the link but move it to an appropriate section of the article. I've moved that to the 'External links' section. Some basic guidelines involving external links can be found at WP:MOS#External links. There's not much reason to include an external link in the body of an article, except maybe in an infobox or something like that. I have done it in all the concerned pages. I have a question concerning 8 of the motets: Michael Stenov issued a benefit CD/DVD with 8 motets, and issued also these 8 motets separately on YouTube. See, e.g., the "Selected discography" section of Afferentur regi: Michael Stenov, Cantores Carmeli, Benefizkonzert Karmeliternkirche Linz – CD/DVD issued by the choir, 2006 – also on YouTube: Anton Bruckner – Motette Afferentur regi à 4 voces und 3 Posaunen. Hmm; that's a tough one. I would probably add it as an inline citation, e.g. "Michael Stenov, Cantores Carmeli, "Benefizkonzert Karmeliternkirche Linz" - CD/DVD issued by the choir, 2006, also on YouTube[inline citation with a link to youtube video, retrieval date, etc]" That way, it's nice and clean. Otherwise, I would create an 'External links' section for it. I'm fairly picky about external links, but other editors might be okay with including them in the discography section. What do you think about the inline citation suggestion?-RHM22 (talk) 23:18, 28 December 2014 (UTC)

Iam lucis orto sidere DYK

Dear,

In Band XXI of the Gesamtausgabe, the two settings of 1868 of Iam lucis orto sidere are put together as No. 24a & No. 24b (on pp. 94-95 and pp. 96-97, respectively). The Gesamtausgabe considers them thus apparently as a first version of the motet in two different settings. Locus iste is following as No. 25. Virga Jesse is put as No. 34. The version of 1886 of Iam lucis orto sidere is following as No. 35. My suggestion:

• ... that Anton Bruckner composed two settings of Iam lucis orto sidere for the Wilhering Abbey (pictured), and a new version of the motet 18 years later?

Gerda put in the meantime another suggestion:

• ... that Anton Bruckner's two settings of Iam lucis orto sidere for the Wilhering Abbey (pictured) have been regarded as early versions of a third setting written 18 years later?

Yes, I'm doing well, thank you. I noticed Bosbyshell on the main page! That article will no doubt introduce many people to someone with whom they were probably totally unfamiliar before. Most of my coin references are now packed away, but I will certainly revisit those in the future. They were pretty interesting, and the life of the first (James Brooke) reads like a Kipling novel. If you remember, I have a family history of colonialism, so that's an interesting subject for me.

@Gerda Arendt: It was my pleasure, and an interesting article makes for an interesting read-through. I suppose it speaks to my absentmindedness that the number 22 didn't register with me! Regarding that Cabal, it looks like a fine outfit. I think I will add my name to that list. It's unfortunate to see so many inactive signatories. Too many content creators have become fed up, I think.

Oh! That is impressive. The only thing I ever got published in The Numismatist was a small letter of correction a few years ago. Unfortunately, my ANA membership lapsed some time in the last few years, so I didn't see your articles. I'm going to join again, so I should be able to see them in the 'electronic edition.'

The journal entry I'm looking for is this one. I would be extremely grateful if you could help me get access to it! My local library doesn't seem to support that website. Thank you for your efforts.

Hi, Thincat! No problem; it was an interesting article that I really enjoyed reading, and the bit about Bruce having never before climbed a mountain and then reaching a record height on Everest is about as 'DYK-worthy' as it gets.

Regarding the 'farther' versus 'further' bit: Some people use them interchangeably (or maybe based on how each one sounds in a given sentence), so I'm not entirely sure that either one in either context is necessarily wrong. However, I usually use 'farther' to indicate distance and 'further' to indicate something metaphorical ("farther from China," "further his agenda," etc.). There is some historical evidence to support that; 'further' is derived from an ancestor of the word 'forth,' while 'farther' seems to have been influenced by the word 'far' (although both trace their roots back 'forth'). Anyway, that is by no means a grammar 'rule,' so I wouldn't fight anyone who wanted to use one or the other in all contexts.

Hello, Editor Extraordinaire. I didn't write the article (it was actually promoted to featured status by Monowi back in 2010); I was just watching it while it was on the main page to avoid vandalism. I think you made the right decision by removing the final s on those abbreviations. Words and acronyms pluralized with apostrophes are a 'pet peeve' of mine, so I try to avoid them religiously. I've heard that even the New York Times sometimes uses them in that way, but that doesn't make it any less wrong. EditorExtraordinaire: You can blank your own talk page if you'd like; a user page is generally considered to be yours, so you can do most anything within reason (as long as you don't include copyrighted material, threats, etc.). Personally, I prefer to archive my old talk pages so that people can find things there that might be relevant at some future point. You can create an archive as an offshoot of your talk page, and then put a link to it on the top of the page like I have here on mine. Georgejdorner: Thank you very much for your thoughtful and thorough review! I agree with your points, especially regarding the chronological issue. I had trouble deciding what to do and where to place the information, since there was no clear demarcation between McKim's personal life and her New Deal mural work. Since most of the events in her personal life section took place after most of the events in the section detailing her art career, I decided to place the former after the latter. Obviously her work with the the Section of Fine Arts is what she's most noted for, so I do think it's useful to display the information in two separate sections.

Regarding the hook, I agree that ALT1 is rather trivial, but I decided to include it because people tend to like things involving very well known people like Pollock. Personally, I prefer the original hook as well.-RHM22 (talk) 04:53, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
