Ron Paul - newsletter controversy
I kindly ask that you reconsider denying the requested protected edit of the Newsletter controversy section of the Ron Paul entry. The current version of the section opens with and repeatedly refers to "Paul's newsletters", yet Ron Paul claims he did not edit the newsletters and that he has "never uttered such words" as those quoted from the newsletters.[1]. I find our current language to be misleading and possibly violating WP:BLP, and potentially libelous (although presidential candidates are in open season so we're unlikely to be sued). I thus requested that the repeated instances of the possessive "Paul's newsletters" are changed to the neutral "the newsletters".
Please note how journalists at UPI and CNN report on the newsletters controversy, avoiding the possessive and using phrases like "newsletters under his name". I think we should stick to at least the same level of objectivity and neutral point of view. Of course, it is possible to cherry-pick media coverage that actively uses the possessive, particularly opinion articles and sensationalist press, headlines, blogs and letters to the editor. Case in point, The New Republic, listed by another editor in the discussion as an example of "three reputable publications" that "have used the terminology", is a limited circulation liberal opinion magazine. No surprise their article "Angry White Man - The bigoted past of Ron Paul" repeatedly refers to "Paul's newsletters". But that doesn't give us a free pass to frame our section that way without explicit citations and careful choice of language.
Most of the opposition arguments in the debate boils down to that the editor's point of view is that these were Ron Paul's newsletters, ergo we should write they are his newsletters. In contrast, my position is that we should carefully avoid imposing our own POV.
Note that I am not arguing for language that deny that these are Paul's newsletters, and we should of course not be shy about including material that may contradict Paul. I am arguing for use of neutral language that let the readers draw their own conclusions based on the facts presented in the section. I thus request that you make the requested protected edit to the article.

Yukon stubs
One reason I used cut and paste was to avoid having to make multiple edits, since the categories the template fed into had to be changed as well. By the way, doing the move on top the new template caused a small problem that required a null edit in one of the articles using the template in order to have the template place them in the correct category(s). RE: media deletion
Regarding the comment left on my talk page yup that's me, yup I said that, and yup, I'll say that again if anyone asks to use my anthems on Wikipedia! Pretty much my standing policy, they can use them if they want but IMHO it'd be better if they found an MP3. I would like for it to be reinstated if possible.
Any way I can get this taken care of so that this hassle isn't done again next time someone wants to use an anthem from my site without making it a hassle for them or me? I would like to know! --Canuckguy (talk) 05:04, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
I am quite sure that the song is public domain (as all anthems are, think of the kind of hassles there would be if anthems weren't!), but individual arrangements of the anthem are subject to, and often are, copyrighted. I use the MIDI files simply because (except in three or four cases, where they are clearly marked, and this one isn't one of them) they are free to be used. I'm hoping to make this more clear on my site, but I'm not sure how. My thought is to go with a tag from creativecommons.org that places them in the public domain, but then I'm wondering if I have to put it on every page? Also, I'd like the text to be used too (as I share Wikipedia's ideas that information should be free), but I don't think factual information is covered under a creativecommons tag. Re: This. The I.P. involved in the dispute came to me and attached WP:STALKING to the incident. I had no reason to doubt the I.P.'s choice of words as he is a very experienced anon. I understand that maybe my language could've been perceived as 'gun ho' (If that's the expression I'm looking for) - but I certainly didn't mean to come off sounding like that. MediaWiki:Gadget-removeAccessKeys.js
I think your recent changes to MediaWiki:Gadget-removeAccessKeys.js is causing errors. I first noticed it when MediaWiki:Sysop.js wasn't working for me anymore. Looking at the FireBug console, FireBug reports:
columnOne.getElementById is not a function

Hey, you recently attempted to change the substs on the level four vandalism template, but in doing so accidentally broke the template. This was pointed out on the help desk and I went ahead and reverted it. Whatever change you were attempting to make looks to have been a good one, but I do not know enough about writing templates to correct it. Can you have a look at this script? On line 14, within var localtitles initialization, the "ja:" line ends with a comma but is the last one in the list. Isn't that a no-no? - Thanks. It's all working tickety-boo for me now. I got into solving this as a result of this thread but I see that the timing of your edits to this file don't match to the timing of the problems the other people reported, I assume the are using different tools or skins than I.

Gadget popups
Saw your change on the popups code. Please be aware that usage of document.write should be avoided at all times. It causes problems with Safari and Opera if you have multiple levels of javascript inclusion. The Common.js function importScript is written as it is for that exact reason. OK then. There's about 2000 or so of those baseball seasonal articles, and some of them which aren't yet Start-Class or higher still need to be expanded. Unfortunately, I have been delaying the expansion of these articles (which I really shouldn't have done), but since you have brought it to my attention, I will take care of it. Delete reason dropdown script
I checked your delete reason dropdown script and it seems to be working okay. My only concern is where you use some of the captured text from the regular expression back into the summary (afd, mfd, prod, unknown db) as the text is "tainted". While the text is provided by the MediaWiki software and should be untainted, it's still a bit dangerous, though I couldn't figure out any situation where it might be bad (see my deleted Sandbox for my experiments). -- Gogo Dodo (talk) 19:33, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Never trust anything. =) My specific concerns were script injection and overflow of the input field. IP
The discussion is closed, so I'll explain here. It gives away the geographical location of the user via WHOIS (take, for example, User:66.218.71.198 and [2]). In some cases, the WHOIS information resolves to a person. In some cases, that IP address may be used to correlate activity for other things for sites whose privacy policies may be less strict than the Wikimedia Foundation's. And for some ISPs, an IP address may be assigned to a very small geographical area, and with other habits for that user, can be used to trace someone in real life. - Re your message: A3 is what I've seen it mostly used for. However, I've also seen some people using it instead of G7.
- On a side note, one bug that I've run into that burned me on an attack page is that if somebody blanks a page, but doesn't tag it with a CSD tag, if you select a deletion reason, you end up the deletion reason and content before blanking was: 'whatever' in the deletion log. - Re your message: Yeah, and I kind of miss that from the previous script. From the previous script, the "CSD A7 (Bio)" option would be be perfect for db-nn. I also happen to miss CSD A7 (Band) since it was a specific link to the music notability (though I wish it said "musical artist or band" instead of just "band").
- Another thing I just discovered is that if you delete an article with a talk page, MediaWiki inserts "[[WP:CSD#G8|CSD G8]] - talk page of a deleted page" into the reason. Request for production of a magic word by a developer
Random832: A consensus appears to have been reached in support of a {{delimitnum}} parser function/magic word (detailed description here). From Jimp’s earlier posts on my talk page it appears that pulling off what is needed via a template would be suboptimal due to its complexity and the fact that numeric values may occasionally exceed 12 digits. You wrote on my talk page (here/difference) that a magic word is the best technique to handle this. How can this request be presented to a developer? Can you help? - P.S. Jimp, Atakdoug, and I did a bunch of work on gap widths. It was a contentious issue that took hard work and lots of file sharing to resolve because some computer platforms only allow span gap resolutions of 0.1-em increments, others can handle 0.05-em gap resolutions, different platforms handle span gaps slightly differently, and the eye is very sensitive to gap width issues so that gaps that appear too wide are objectionable and those that are too narrow seem to pretty much disappear. I couldn’t quite keep up at bugzilla:13025 when you wrote “
it is better practice to use a class and control the specific styles with stylesheets so that users may override this style in their own user css.” But it seems that what you wrote means the editor—not the “reader”—would be setting styles. If that impression is correct—and I hope I’m wrong—then one will have editors using Macs making decisions that look just perfect on thier machines but which looks bad for Windows people using Explorer (and visa versa). A tweak of just 0.05 em makes a big difference in how satisfied everyone is. I ended up treating the gap after the digit 1 differently from those that follow the other nine digits in order to obtain a solution that satisfied all parties.I am putting in the extra effort of writing this post to you only because I want the developer’s work to be well-received and widely adopted. I think that may not happen if some people find the results to be “ugly.” My only request is that you ensure that the developer is made aware of the technique we used to get span-widths that resulted in a satisfactory compromise for us all. - Should I post a message, perhaps at 1.4.6.2, alerting interested parties that the proposal has been advanced to a developer to be made into a parser function? The only reason I’m reticent to do so is it would likely be tagged as “resolved” and then archived. The primary disadvantage of doing this is the links in bugzilla:13025 would have to be updated so the developer can refer to the proposal’s details. Re: Rename
Hi. If it works, no problem. The reason why I did it is that we used to ask for logged-in confirmation, until we created the template. After the template's inception, we started declining requests that failed to follow the basic instructions. Declining and asking people to repost when the basic instructions are not followed also served the purpose of preventing people from trying to fix the links in the template (people used to get the filling out of the template wrong all the time...), which would normally only make it worse. In order to optimize the time the Bcrats would spend in renames, we were making it clear that if a user didn't take the time to read simple instructions, the requests would be denied, which would cause people to read the instructions, thus preventing silly mistakes that caused us to take more and more time to handle simple requests.
Most of this, however, was before clerks started helping out with renames. With the help of the clerks, there's less of a need for us to be too concerned with wasting time fixing silly mistakes. But I guess I was on "automatic". Thanks for the help. :)

Nominator message on db-copypaste
The template db-copypaste is a recently created speedy deletion template which deals with a particular case of g6 that occurs frequently. The soft redirect by Happy Melon does not allow me to reinsert the nominator message within the box itself, and I believe it is an essential part of the template, even though other g6 templates do not require such a message. Lost edits of analysis
Hi. I did a rewrite of the lede of analysis back when I split it into a prose article and a disambiguation article. Apparently the rewritten version was deleted in the process of moving the disambiguation page over it; could you possibly retrieve the deleted version and put it somewhere where I can access it? db-notice issue
Noticed your note on Template talk:Db-notice. The same problem was reported as Twinkle bug 117 I cannot think of a better way to solve it atm either, but perhaps we just need to add a "namespace" parameter instead and then have all templates and scripts that invoke this set that instead ? Semapedia
Hi Random, you made the last edit (in Nov) at WT:Semapedia, so you might be a good person to run this by. What projects that seek to establish some kind of link between Wikipedia articles and objects in the real world seem most successful to you? The issue is coming up today because the homeschooling people are trying to re-redirect "WP:HOME". There is enough interest in the world (particularly among the Germans) for projects like Semapedia that my guess is that someone several months from now typing in WP:HOME would be looking for some similar project, but I'd like to nail this down before WP:HOME becomes forever tied to homeschooling! - Some days ago, an editor made this edit.
- On 23 February, at 5:15, the same editor has made his first revert.
- On the same day, at 22:23, the same editor made his second revert.
- On that very day, at 22:57, the same editor made his third revert.
- On the same day, at 23:26, the same editor made his fourth revert.
Please cancel his fourth revert - which violates 3RR. No need to warn him, because I'm sure it was not done on purpose! He's an honest person who is absolutely aware to the 3RR and has always obeyed the 3RR. Eliko (talk) 01:28, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
