Scout Creek

Hi, Rangasyd - I added a map to Scout Creek, as I noticed there was a Geobox Locator map for NSW which I found at Template:Geobox locator Australia New South Wales maybe useful for adding to your other river /creek articles. It uses the mouth co-ords, to add the red dot. I also changed the class to a start, as it was better than a stub. Regards Jokulhlaup (talk) 17:33, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. I appreciate your help. I've held off on maps as for small creeks, such as Scouts, the map adds little benefit to the observer. Over time I want to plot the coordinates of major waterways on maps that are meaningful to the reader - eg, the course of the Hunter River in the Hunter region; or the Macquarie in central west NSW; etc. At present I've moved onto Victoria rivers. Glad you liked the map, I think maps can always be useful - but always difficult for rivers as they are not just a point feature. I have used the Location map+ option, but you do need the right base map. Good Luck with your Victoria rivers, I will have a look if I find time. Thanks. Actually, to be precise, it's Qantas Airways Limited. Its call sign is QANTAS (or Quebec-Alpha-November-Tango-Alpha-Sierra). The abbreviated corporate history is Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services → QANTAS Limited → Qantas Empire Airways Limited → nationalised Qantas Empire Airways → nationalised Qantas Airways → partially privatised Qantas Airways Limited → fully privatised Qantas Airways Limited. Your thoughts?

Can you take a look at this? The ICAC is not a court and it's findings are based on opinion, not evidence. No conviction has been recorded which is the BLPCRIME requirement. Even first-year law students understand the distinction (which I think is what we're dealing with here). I'm at 2RR (they are at 3RR) but I'm thinking of requesting page protection. Everything other than registered users adding verified information has been vandalism and edit-warring. Could do with some extra eyes. Cheers mate, Stalwart111 23:52, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

Thanks and g'day. I've edited the talk page a little, to try and organise the long rants. Answering the questions you raised:

1. Agree with request for page protection. Good idea. Happy to support your request.
2. Agree, ICAC does not assess evidence to the same level as a Court and several findings of ICAC have not seen light of day, in terms of convictions, or its decisions have been overturned by the Courts. The most notable of these being the decision of the New South Wales Court of Appeal to overturn an ICAC decision against Nick Greiner that found him "...as conducting himself contrary to known and recognised standards of honesty and integrity." Dismissed by NSWCoA in a 2:1 finding as ICAC overstepping its authority.
3. I'm not too sure about the relevance of the comment about your location, other than a radio station.

Lake versus dam

Would it be true to say that any man-made dam or reservoir shouldn't be placed within a lake category? Even if they have lake in the article title? I think that is the consensus for the list articles and therefore should apply to the individual pages as well. - Shiftchange (talk) 01:39, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

Exactly correct. Should this conversation happen on my page or here? There is a misnomer in English to call large bodies of water "lakes", but they really only occur naturally. All other bodies of water formed by man-made (or even animal made) are not lakes, but may be called variously pondages, reservoirs, etc. That's what I've spent the past day trying to clean up. It's a huge project. Then we have the added problem of dams and reservoirs by states. Some of the state pages (e.g. NSW and WA just list dams, whereas other states list both dams and reservoirs, such as QLD, Vic, and the ACT. Finally, SA category page is on reservoirs, not dams. And then I need to start work on the list pages - how do we group the lists, alpha, or by geographic region or catchment, like has been done with rivers? Do you know how to move or rename a category page? Ideally, I see the solution being:

1. lakes by state and the Australian category to simply include the state categories and not every lake; for naturally occurring water bodies only
2. reservoirs and dams by state and the Australian category to simply include the state categories and not every dam/reservoir; for man-made water bodies and the structures that support their creation only

I hope that makes sense. This all started out one day over 12 months ago when I went looking for something about the Snowy Mountains Scheme and it was a mess. :-) I've sorted out most of NSW rivers; now working on Vic rivers when I've encountered the same problem that I had in NSW. I think renaming categories is just done with a manual change for each page within the original category. I will remove the lake category from Queensland dams and reservoirs shortly. In the past I wasn't sure whether to use a reservoir or dam or both categories here and on the Commons. Having the category 'dams and reservoirs in' is a good idea. An article about a dam should discuss the wall and the impoundment it creates. In some cases, for instance Warragamba/Burragorang and Burrendong/Burrendong, separate articles have been created, but I think they should be merged into one for the dam and include the features of the impoundment. Difficulties sometimes arise where the impoundment has a nature classification, such as an IBA, or national park, etc. And there is no move tab on category pages. satusuro, any advice please? Category:Lakes of Queensland now contains only natural lakes. I noticed that neither Hoover Dam nor Three Gorges Dam have lake categories. I think if its a dam, reservoir, weir, barrage or storage then we have an article about that structure and use the dam name rather than the lake and have a redirect for the lake which is created if it is also known as a such. - Shiftchange (talk) 07:00, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

Three Gorges Dam points to a reservoir at Three Gorges Reservoir Region, but there is no lake listing on either page. Hoover Dam points to a reservoir at Lake Mead and a lake classification has been given to this latter page. Just because those Americans do it, should we follow blindly? No. I'm in favour of using the redirect function and ensuring an appropriate hat note is placed at the beginning of the landing page after the redirect. Hi there - I notice you're doing a great job updating articles after the Tas election. Just a reminder that roles do not officially change until the swearing in ceremony, so be cautious about changing infobox dates etc. to suggest that terms have already begun. I will get there in due course. The section on his political career is principally focused on speculative reasons for his resignation (no citations). I just want to draw your attention to the following statement on the Commons category-inline template page. "It is intended for use in the "External links" section of an article." For the non-inline version it is stated that "In articles, this template should be placed at the top of the ==External links== section". Here is a tip for to determine the exact suburb or locality for things such as dams in Queensland. You can use this Queensland Globe layer in Google Earth. Check boundaries and then localities for the name and boundary of the suburb or locality. It seems New South Wales has a layer available as well. Barwon South West

I'm a little bit dubious about the notability of this regional designation, in part because I'm born and bred in the area and I've never heard of it: one government agency grouping the Surf Coast, the Otways and the Western District together does not necessarily make notability for a Wikipedia article. Some of the regions there are actually established, but this is one that doesn't seem to have any basis beyond that department (the other that raises an eyebrow is the Hume region, but I'm not from the area so couldn't say it with as much confidence). I hear what you're saying. I found the whole myriad of Otways, Western District, Wimmera, Mallee, Northern Victoria, Central Victoria, Goldfields, Goulburn Valley, etc., very confusing as their boundaries were unclear. I've set out to make them clearer through the clearly defined five regional boundaries, but not to delete the other articles, other than to link them to these new regional acticles. If future government administrations choose to abolish those regions, so be it. Have a look at Regions of Victoria; I've revised it to give a better (in my mind) overview from where it was a few weeks ago. Feedback is always welcome. Rangasyd (talk) 14:36, 17 August 2014 (UTC)

All of the other cases you've listed are fairly long-standing historical regions, though; it would make sense to have articles on them regardless of what the government did. I feel like you might be misreading the source as well - it says that they're the regions for Regional Development Victoria (which is not even a government department but an agency under one); "Barwon South West" turns up no hits on the Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure website, and I am yet to be convinced it has any (or at least any significant) usage outside of that one agency. Actually I take that last comment back - apparently the same government department has two different domain names (?!?!?!?). Clearly they're being used at state government level in a planning context, but I don't see any usage beyond that - calling them "economic regions" is a bit of a misnomer when a) I think they're only used for bureaucratic processes around planning and infrastructure, and b) no one even in said regions is going to have ever heard of them. Disambiguation in hatnotes.

Greetings! I've noticed that you make a lot of hatnotes like this: {{other|Georges Creek{{!}}Georges Creek (disambiguation)}}. This is actually the wrong way around. They should read like this: {{other|Georges Creek (disambiguation){{!}}Georges Creek}}. That way, the software will pick up that the link to the disambiguation page is intentional, and will not flag it as an error needing to be fixed. VICNAMES

Uuuuurgh. I saw the new dumb-as-a-box-of-hammers LASSI system when I was writing the Grey River article this morning, but I didn't twig to this problem, so thanks for alerting me.

If we can find a permanent link option for the specific pages, we might be able to rework the template. The alternative would be to just direct the link to the LASSI page and remove the specific parameter directing the user to the exact page. I'm trying and failing to find any form of permanent link; if you could find one that'd be amazing, otherwise maybe we should write to the department and try to get their attention.

It's a shame that it's so badly designed, because the integration with the mapping utility would otherwise be very useful and a better replacement for Google Maps coverage of location boundaries. The Drover's Wife (talk) 17:04, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi, Denis Napthine holds bachelor and master degrees, not a doctorate. He is therefore not academically entitled to use the honorific term "Doctor".
