Categories[edit]

Ive started to work on Categories over at Commons. I noticed that one Cub player had a category, Jorge Soler. So, i was gonna tag other Cubs rookies with Categories by Name but the very first one required a New Category. Can you go to Creating Category:Javier Baez at Commons and show me how to create a new category? Im not sure what kind of info is necessary. Buster Seven Talk 13:45, 1 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Fazu Aliyeva, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Russian. Millard Sheets[edit]

I have a picture I can not find on line it is a man and three plow horses in a field. Everything is rather dark. It is signed Millard Sheets, I would like to know the name of the picture. There are large hills around the field.

Thank you for your time. Sincerely

Would like your thoughts on renaming this article to possibly "Lieutenant General George Washington (statue)" to differentiate it from the person, his military rank or career. I think the present nomenclature is probably confusing to many Wikipedia readers. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 23:54, 3 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Cat[edit]

Master of the cats, what would I use for the director of a music academy? I gave up searching when even for Liszt who was one I didn't find more than "music educator". If none exists we should make one, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:53, 4 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Probably also for teachers at such institutions? It's a different thing from being a music teacher at school, or giving private piano lessons. Another one: Kantor (the German word) is not just cantor (church), but means someone who is responsible for all church music at a church, often being the organist and conductor of the choir(s) in one. Do you know a better translation? For the famous Thomaskantor, we translate to "Director of church music", but he was responsible for more than one church. German has Kirchenmusikdirektor, therefore I believe we should not use "director" for just one church. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:18, 4 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

question on the availability of the other choral music of Bruno Bettinelli[edit]

Hello sir, Hello Amantio,

I'm part of a Belgian choir and we would be interested in the music of Bruno Bettinelli. Is there any way you can help us find the below music or any contact you can provide us? If you know that it is not available, we also would like to know.

Oak Ridge[edit]

I am working on an article for Elizabeth Rona. I am getting a red link on one category that seems to me should have lots of entries. Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies (ORINS) (you have to leave off the "s" to see how many people it could work for. It is now known as the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) which doesn't have a category either. Rona was faculty there after she worked on the Manhattan Project and before the 1966 change to ORAU. As far as I can tell, a bunch of Manhattan Project workers also worked for (ORINS) and it seems like it should have if not alumni and faculty, as least "people"? I get no hits for ORAU, so it probably doesn't need a category. No rush, I have family in so have not been on much, but am probably going to take it live by the weekend. As always, thank you for your expertise. SusunW (talk) 23:25, 6 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Like in all his career this was the most important life event to him personally. I think more likely this you have the axe to grind. This is a COMPLAINT. PLEASE PASS IT ON TO YOUR SUPERIORS.

Informing about a little magazine named UNMUKTA UCHCHHASH[edit]

Dear Sir, Here I want to inform you about a little magazine named Unmukta Uchchhash. This magazine is edited by Mr. Bikash Biswas. He lives in Delhi. He was an eminent writer of Desh Patrika. During 1960s and '70s he used to stay in Japan for his business purpose but as he have a great love for Bengali literature as well as he have the power of writing he used to write an weekly column in Desh from Japan which was very popular among the readers. However this little magazine gets published at Calcutta book fair every year. This magazine provides various data about Dubhadhchandra, Swami Vivekananda and others. Medieval German poets[edit]

Hi Ser Amantio, I see that you've recently added the cat "German classical composers" to a load of medieval German poets. I'm guessing that you don't have expertise in medieval German literature, so I hope you don't mind if I'm blunt: this is plain wrong. They're not classical, and they're performers and songwriters rather than "composers" in any sense that most WP users would recognize.

I've removed the wrong cats on a number of these that I've come across in my own editing, but I think it really would be better (and certainly preferable from my point of view) if you could undo this categorization yourself in all articles relating to the pre-modern period.

Thanks. --Pfold (talk) 23:13, 5 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Your category changes on articles of Brazilian writers[edit]

Please see WP:DUPCAT. Categories that subdivide a parent category only by gender are supposed to be non-diffusing, meaning the non-gengered parent category must be left on the article together with the gendered one. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 11:24, 6 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Category placement[edit]

Hi, re this edit, please be careful where you place categories: WP:FOOTERS shows that they should be before the stub templates. Explanations[edit]

Let me explain about the editings in the page The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.I removed the wikitable (which says the wins and nominations of the third Hobbit film) from this page because it has no point to exist. What is the reason of the existence of this wikitable in the page The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies; There is a special page (this page is a wikitable generally) about the Accolades of the entire Hobbit film trilogy named List of accolades received by The Hobbit film series. Also, there is no wikitable about the wins and nominations of the two previous Hobbit films in both pages, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.I think it's enough the existence of the page List of accolades received by The Hobbit film series. It covers in section of the awards for the hpobbit film trilogy. I was wondering[edit]

Aren't such edits [5] violate the WP:AWB rule of use #4? Formally you're clearing an invisible category. Informally, you're fixing nothing, isn't it? Materialscientist (talk) 22:23, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong logic - categories can be (and are) moved on Commons too. Actually there are more reasons to move it there (different spelling of names on different wikis). Materialscientist (talk) 22:34, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Nicolao.

In what situations do you think it's necessary to give an "Only warning" to vandals? I'm from the Portuguese Wikipedia (I'm a rollbacker there) and I'm thinking of using this method. Vítor (talk) 19:25, 22 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Canyons and gorges[edit]

Hi Ser, I see you're busily beavering away at reorganising categories! I'm curious though as to why we're moving Gorges of Germany to Canyons and gorges of Germany. Ditto for Austria. AFAIK Germany and Austria don't have any canyons; it's mainly an American expression, not much used in Europe. --Bermicourt (talk) 21:50, 22 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect the "canyons and gorges" naming came from US editors and they just assumed the rest of the world uses the same terminology, but it doesn't. To be fair I've seen some gorges in SE Europe referred to as canyons and of course cañón is the Spanish name for a gorge, but apart from that it's not common here... aha, according to my Dictionary of Geography, canyons tend to form in arid terrain where there is little rain, but the river is fed from elsewhere. So it cuts deeply but the valley sides aren't eroded much. That's why we don't have them except maybe in Spain. So it could make sense to have Canyons and gorges of Europe and Spain, but we probably only need Gorges of Foo elsewhere. --Bermicourt (talk) 22:03, 22 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well it's a good point, but it's probably good to discuss it with editors covering that field first. ☺ --Bermicourt (talk) 22:08, 22 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Commons template fixing?[edit]

I assume you know that for simplicity the Commons category template is designed to work without naming the page? ... If no value is provided the page name is used by default. There is nothing to fix unless the Commons page does not match the Wikipedia page. Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 00:21, 24 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Nimbus227: It removes the page from Category:Commons category template with no category set.
Ser Amantio di Nicolao, when you are doing this, please check that the category name is valid - this one wasn't, I fixed it. --Redrose64 (talk) 11:06, 24 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maintenance is fine, but this isn't a category that needs emptying. The rationale is to find the links on the wikipedia page that no longer point properly to the corresponding wikimedia page - which you can tell fairly readily if the link is red, or the page it goes to redirected - neither of which happened in the North American NA-64 Yale link. Anything else is an error with the bot that is generating the category whose primary purpose seems to be to generate that listing for cross referencing rather than as a list of erroneous pages - check the deletion discussion page for that list if you will. - NiD.29 (talk) 17:37, 10 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@NiD.29: The term "wikimedia" encompasses a lot of projects, and Wikipedia itself is just one of them; there are also Wikimedia Meta-Wiki, normally known as Meta; Wikimedia Commons, normally known as Commons; and plenty of others, see Wikimedia Foundation. I guess you mean Commons. But as I remarked at Template talk:Commons category#Cat for empty parameter 1, I have never seen a redlink produced by either {{Commons category}} or {{Commons category-inline}}. Awaiting your examples there. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:55, 10 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dedicated Anna Cora Mowatt website external link[edit]

I've added one to the ACM article, and wanted to call your attention as the registered editor who seems to have taken the most, most recent, interest. It's a pity the article still extensively references a defunct version of the site when a live updated one exists and has been made known, but it's beyond my formatting skills and lack of interest in registering and patience for getting involved with byzantine Wiki editor stuff... 75.143.187.110 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 20:02, 29 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Awarding you to a barnstar... (for no one can possibly belittle you by awarding a barnstar to you)[edit]

The Ser Amantio di Nicolao Epic Award
I have been thinking about this for long (since last night). Given your epic contributions to Wikipedia, it seems almost embarrassing and belittling to give a barnstar to you. So I thought and thought... and voila! The solution was purty simple :) Instead of awarding a barnstar to you, I am awarding you – Ser Amantio di Nicolao – to the barnstar family !!! :) I hope you remember this for some time.... Dear Ser Amantio :)

I am so happy beyond measure to find that you are working on Lenore's work. She was the legal Guardian and teacher of my teacher, Sue Hoya Sellars.

There are things I would LOVE to have included, and I am not an experienced WIKI user, I try but then I realize it is way over my cosmic head Ser.

I only met Lenore once when I was 5 years old - but have worked along side Sue my whole life. She recently passed and I am archiving 40 years of Sue's journals digitally.

Is there a way for me to work with you/hire you, ply you with cups of tea to bring information about her "enduring influence?" That is what the Greenbelt Museum calls the on-going work of Lenore as it plays out into our community. As it turns out - her philosophy as evidenced in her books was taught to me by Sue, who learned it from her, and now I teach it to hundreds and sometimes thousands a month. This month I will go to the UN and Lenore's name will be spoken.

I provided tools and other items for her recent Museum show in Greenbelt.

In any event, I hope to hear from you.

here is a link to a little starting video I made for my community - you can fast forward to hear me reading from her book. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrU9K2i8JmQ

Editor of the Week : nominations needed![edit]

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up citations?

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today!

Naulakha[edit]

We were both editing this at the same time. I had just uploaded the photos I took in 2014. The map in the infobox is helpful, but its size is overwhelming. Is there a way to resize it or eliminate it? I like having it because it lets readers have an idea of where this place is. I had wanted to visit it for years, but wasn't sure just where it was. When I was in Vermont in 2014, I researched it and found it. Dummerston is really just a stone's throw from Brattleboro, a much more well-known place. Wood Islands Harbour Range Lights (2009) - Name Change Request?[edit]

Hello from Prince Edward Island in Canada. As this would appear to be 'your' article page ... would you be interested in changing its name to: Wood Islands Lighthouse?

The Wood Islands Harbour Range Lights are no longer in service (since 2014) and have been removed from the Wood Islands Harbour Entrance ... they have been relocated, but they still exist.

I would like to 'seriously' edit the article, retaining 'your' information of the range lights, and build up the article as to detail and history on The Lighthouse, navigation facts and some history of the harbour.

I do not see the need to create a new article page ... when your original has good content and format to edit.

Your thoughts ... and I assume here you have now Administrator Authority, or 'know' someone who can change 'your' page name?

There's wonderful anecdote from Yip Harburg (lyricist of The Wizard of Oz, Finian's Rainbow, etc.). On his first day as a freshman at City College of NY, he sat alphabetically in English class behind a guy named Ira Gershwin. Afterward, they discovered that they shared an obsession with Gilbert's verse. But Harburg had assumed that the librettos were verse plays, and didn't know about Sullivan's music. Gershwin invited him over to hear records of the songs, and Harburg writes about the absolute joy and revelation of hearing the words and music together for the first time. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 02:07, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
"Blah, blah, blah, blah, moon,
Blah, blah, blah, above.
Blah, blah, blah, blah, croon,
Blah, blah, blah, blah, love." – Ira Gershwin.[7]
Did Gilbert ever write anything so profound? == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 10:10, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I'm a real Ira fan. I just picked the silliest example.
A favorite Harburg couplet (from Bloomer Girl): "Even the rabbits inhibit their habits on Sundays in Seneca Falls."
And Yip wrote the immortal lyrics to "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 17:26, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I'm not at home and can't listen on my laptop, so it will have to wait a week. But I look forward to it.
About 20 years ago I came down to the Kennedy Center to see a production of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Bernstein's music for the Black characters was especially lush, and reminded me of Porgy. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 17:50, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Phila Orchestra did a semi-staged rendition of MASS last season, a production that, like the work, was a huge undertaking but frustratingly uneven. 1600 has a great hymn, "Take Care of This House;" a tour-de-force comic number, "Duet for One;" and a "Bess, You Is My Woman Now"-like love duet. I felt that Alan Jay Lerner fell down on the lyrics more than Bernstein did on the music. And the minstrel show in Act II is a mess.
We should see something together some time. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 19:55, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I'm outside Phila. I should have gone to Hamlet last month, but didn't make it. I'm down in D.C. a couple times a year so getting together would be great. If there's anything in or around Phila you plan to see, please let me know. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 17:43, 3 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

NPP / AfC[edit]

Hi. Just a reminder that in just over a week at Wikimania there's going to be a cross-Wiki discussion about the systems of control of new pages. This is a round-table rather than a presentation or a lecture. On the agenda are reforms to the new article reviewing systems and ways to help new users better understand our content policies. If you are going to Italy and would like to take part, please check out the conference schedule, and I look forward to seeing you there. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 17:47, 14 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

edit summary please[edit]

Information icon Hey, i know you’ve been around for a while, (and maybe a big shot,) but if you could be so kind, can you toss in a small edit summary when you edit? I have nothing against your edits, but an edit summary would facilitate working through my watch list a lot. It's a simple form of paying respect to others... --Wuerzele (talk) 21:14, 15 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

JAMES BURTON[edit]

Dear Ser Amantio di Nicolao,

Please would you move all the pages in the category 'James Burton (1761-1837) buildings' back to the new category 'James Burton (Property developer) buildings' in order to make the category coherent with the title of the profile page, which is 'James Burton (Property developer). This alone is sufficient reason to have the category renamed, but, in addition, James Burton was not born in 1761 but 1762 - the title of your category contains an error, in addition to being unhelpfully different from the category of the profile page. Your edits are both incorrect and misleading, so please undo them.

Two points. One: the title "Category:James Burton (Property developer) buildings" is incorrect. If the category is to be used, the "P" in "Property" should not be capitalized. Secondly, while I did move the articles, I did not move the category: the category move was made by User:Webbjones. I will go ahead and move the category once more, so that it matches the article; beyond that you would need to speak to the other editor about the category. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:30, 17 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for moving it. I will make sure that both the article title and the category title do not have a capital 'P' for 'property'. (2A02:C7D:6005:2800:F1EE:134:739E:D252 (talk) 22:16, 17 June 2016 (UTC)).[reply]

Map errors[edit]

I’ve just undone one of your changes, the second in two days – [8], [9] – as the change caused a “no such map” error. It’s not obvious what map you are trying to change it to so I thought it best to revert in each case.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 17:29, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at your other changes I’ve worked out what you are trying to do, and why it is failing – maps with spaces in their names – in case you had not recognised the problem.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 17:49, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

UK Exit[edit]

I don't see this being covered really anywhere else, the Business and economy bit focuses on the market impacts while the leave news is political. - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 11:53, 24 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, dearest Ser Amantio di Nicolao, how are you?

Please, I opened thjis new page now: do you have some minutes of your time to read it and correct my mistakes? Thanks a lot for your precious help and have a nice week end!!!

Infobox map changes[edit]

I appreciate all the work you've been putting in with the NRHP infobox maps, but in the future could you mark those edits as minor? I keep pages that I created on my watchlist, so your run through the Illinois NRHP sites flooded it rather badly and I can't filter out those edits. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 23:21, 24 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Illinois isn't the only state where this might be an issue, so I figured I'd bring it up before you moved on to any of the others. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 01:41, 25 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello[edit]

Hi Ser Amantio di Nicolao. I was reading through the Spring 2016 issue of our high school magazine and saw the article on you. Very cool. I didn't realize any other classmates were active on Wiki much less the most active - congratulations!. I started with Wiki shortly after you but have no where near your number of contributions. But I do enjoy contributing to a Wiki although it's been off and on according to the demands of life. Keep up the good work. Skeet Shooter (talk) (class of 1977)

Hi Ser. Unfortunately, I don't get to attend many school activities. I do visit VA, but I spend time with my Dad who is still there in the area. Happy editing! Skeet Shooter (talk) 16:08, 25 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Map pins[edit]

Hey, per your edits such as this, I noticed that there had been no visible map prior to your edit and none after... something must be wonky in the infobox formatting. Any idea how to fix? Montanabw(talk) 03:22, 27 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Order of the Netherlands Lion[edit]

I've seen you moved the content of this category to "Order of the Dutch Lion". However Order of the Netherlands Lion is the correct translation, see this talk. I'm trying to revert this all manually now because I don't seem to be able to use cat a lot. That's a lot of work. The category "order of the Dutch Lion" should really be removed and the contents thereof moved to the category "Order of the Netherlands Lion" Gerard von Hebel (talk) 16:45, 27 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what you're doing with this edit but it's moving pages from Category:Historic districts in Virginia from a red linked Category:Historic districts in USA Virginia Northern. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 19:00, 29 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
