Hello and welcome again. Read WP:BIO and let me know if you think he meets it. More or less, we need multiple non-trivial published sources (articles, books) about this person. You can come and discuss his notability at WT:ORBCW with the rest of the frume chevra here, if you wish. Basically, I and others think he should be deleted, and unless you can convince us that he meets WP:BIO, we will eventually propose the article for a deletion debate, at which the community at large will determine whether he's notable or not. See WP:AFD for more on that process... Welcome again. Kol tuv. - crz crztalk 16:43, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Refer to WP:BIO and tell me what there is ABOUT him, not by him. - crz crztalk 17:22, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg is the Chabad-Lubavitch representative in Mumbai, India. He runs the Chabad House in Mumbai which was previously known as Nariman House. Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg was born in Israel and move to Brooklyn, New York i when he was ten years old and then moved with his wife Rivkah to Mumbai in 2003 and started a Chabad House serving the local community and Israeli backpackers.

On November 25, 2008 the Chabad House in Mumbai was attacked by terrorists and he and his wife was held hostage.

Chabad House[edit]

The center, located at 5 Hormusji Street[1], is run by Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and caters mainly to Israelis who are on their way to "party hotspots" such as Goa and Rajasthan.[2] The three flights a week bring hundreds of them from Israel to Mumbai and in an interview Holtzberg said he understood the nature of their needs. The young Rabbi, who grew up in Brooklyn said that they "need relief" from the army, from work, from real life.[2] He said, “they come here to do everything the army didn’t allow them to do. Their shoes had to be polished and tied – here they wear sandals. They had to cut their hair – here they grow their hair long.”[2]

Terrorist attack[edit]

The Chabad centre was seized and attacked during the November 2008 Mumbai attacks[3][4], at around 9:45 pm local time on Wednesday[5], the four terrorists took advantage of the fact that local security forces were operating in several locations throughout the city.[6] Newscasters were calling it the "final assault"[7], and the building is near the Leopold Cafe, another building attacked during the strike. Initially it was reported that six Israelis were being held hostage.[3] though that later jumped to 8 with a Chabad spokesman in Israel, Moni Ender, saying there were at least eight Israelis inside the house, including Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivka Holtzberg[7] and according to several reports, both Holtzberg and his wife were unconscious.[8] The Rabbi's two -year-old son was released earlier Thursday along with his nanny[8], Sandra Samuel, 44, who also worked as a cook for the centre for the last five years.[9] Israeli Channel 2 reported one of the hostages had been forced at gunpoint to call the Israeli Consulate in Mumbai with the captors' demand for the release of several Islamic terrorists from Indian jails.[10]

It was reported gun men opened fired indiscriminately towards the crowd [3] and 4-5 casualties among hostages taken by the gun men.

Late Thursday evening, State officials in India confirmed to the Associated Press that eight hostages were released from the Chabad House.[11] According to several reports there was some sort of military operation at the scene, and that it looked like they were waiting for an opportunity to storm the building. At that time, it was still unclear how many additional hostages were still being held and whether Holtzberg and his wife were among those released.[11] Evidently, while 8 have been released, earlier reports said that 4 remain "unconscious" inside.[12][9]

Later, conflicting reports surfaced, by Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor saying that the 8 people seen near Chabad House were not hostages, and that they were local Indians from a home in the same compound, and not Jewish or Israeli hostages[10] and CNN India reported very early Friday morning that a large blast was heard at the centre, signaling that fighting has not ended.[13], however Israel Radio reported that the Indian forces were searching for other gunmen inside the building and not a single a shot had been fired and the building has been taken over by Indian security forces.[10]

Shortly before dawn on Friday[14], Indian security forces began an attack on the Chabad House and that an unknown number of people were being held hostage. TV footage showed troops abseiling from a helicopter into the building, and soldiers on the ground closing in.[15]

Gavriel Holtzberg[edit]

Hi. You created a link at the Mumbai Chabad House to to Gavriel Holtzberg. Right now the link redirects back to the Chabad house article. I suspect that you plan on making a separate article on Gavriel. I don't that's a good idea. See WP:BLP1E. Its unlikly that he is notable for Wikipedia. A better idea would be to have all the information on Gavriel at the Chabad house article. Best, --brewcrewer (yada, yada) 05:33, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As a leader of the Jewish community in Mumbai he certainly has natability and this is also true for Rivka Holtzberg. solomonmaimen (talk) 12:42, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
