I am greatly saddened by this news. My relationship with the user was as co-editor/collaborator on a number of WP articles. We have not always seen eye to eye and our initial interactions were considerably fractious on both our parts. Later we mended fences and had developed a more positive wp relationship. I have read his user page and, while on WP, he revealed some of his personal life, including his health problems. I have never received nor sent a direct email from/to him: I don't know his "real name". My sympathies go to his family and friends; this is a significant loss to the wp community.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 00:34, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Mentor Me

Hey, 6 years ago one of my articles RedSpotGames was nominated for deletion. You were one of the voices of reason in the discussion. The article is marked for deletion again. Redspotgames is a Dreamcast publisher, the creator of the company created a Dreamcast website before creating Redspotgames. It's called Dreamcast-Scene. I am a writer for Dreamcast scene because of that, an admin thinks I have conflict of interest where as I feel I am a subject matter expert. It is also something I have declared on my profile page for years.

I wrote this article to the best of my ability, I used references from primary and secondary sources to archive everything notable about the company. I don't think I showed any biases. Please help me write that page. If an admin works with me and we write an awesome article, it will help me write better articles.

What do you say?--Cube b3 (talk) 23:02, 19 March 2016 (UTC)

@Cube b3: It is always nice to be referred to as a voice of reason : )
I am a strong supporter of the concept of mentoring. However, I don’t believe that the optimal pairing is an admin and a new editor. It ought to be an experienced editor and a new editor. While admin’s tend to be experienced, they may or may not have the right qualities to be a mentor.
We already have a program: Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user/Adoptee's Area.
I’ve actually offered to mentor several editors, and I’m likely to make the offer again but in my particular case, I prefer to work on an article in which I have some interest. Please take no offense but I have zero interest in video games, so would not be a good candidate as a mentor.--S Philbrick(Talk) 23:15, 19 March 2016 (UTC)
It is great hearing from you. I am actually just a slow learner as I've been on Wikipedia since day 1. I am a professional journalist as well. Not a full time professional type, but I do have a degree in Media and I've had a number of published articles in news papers. Therefore, I can call myself a pro :p. That said, whenever I work on something less known my work ends up on deletion.
Thanks for sharing the adoption area with me though I don't think I want to put myself on a list though. Maybe once I save my current batch of articles we can work on a subject that we are mutually interested in... I waited 6 years to contact you so who knows maybe a few years down the road I can approach you with help on a subject that might interest you.
Since you have already participated in the RedSpotGames talk, I don't think it would be canvasing if I asked you to participate in the current AfD? Best Regards--Cube b3 (talk) 02:41, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
Bad timing, which is not your fault. My name area of interest is women's basketball, and we are in the middle of the postseason tournament, so most of my on wiki activity will be related to basketball for the next three weeks.--S Philbrick(Talk) 12:52, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
Random question. Why are most female sports not as popular as male sports. I've only seen Woman Basketball once and have never seen male basketball at length so can't comment. But, my home country is all about Cricket. Several years ago... I was watching the World Cup with a few friends and we flipped channels and the female World Cup was on. These were like really good athletes. They were knocking the ball to the boundary line, they were running fast and everything you'd expect from a good Cricket game. Now I am not into cricket, but it is a cultural phenomenon. Everyone watches it, but it was the Woman's World Cup and even the stadium was half empty. My friend informed me they were playing in a slightly smaller stadium so it is easier for them to hit the boundary. I also have a cousin who was phenomenal at Cricket. Like when my family played on the weekends or summer holidays. She was always in the top 3 players. Just something random. Totally unrelated to Wikipedia, but it's been on my mind as of late.--Cube b3 (talk) 20:51, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
In basketball, the games played by men and women have very similar rules, but some people feel the games are played very differently. Men’s games are more physical, have taller and stronger players, a more apt to have dunks and more apt to have one-on-one drives to the basket, while the women’s game is mostly played below the rim, and when well played, involves more passing, more assists and more team play. It is also true, at least at the moment in the US, that the lesser ranked teams on the men’s side a closer inability to the top drank teams is so on the women’s side. I’m a big fan of the women’s game but some of the teams play game that is almost unwatchable. I hope that changes over time as more and more females become interested in the game and the general level of ability improves.--S Philbrick(Talk) 15:10, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
So basically women's basketball looks different which is why it is less popular. Female cricket however looks identical to male cricket. Yet , doesn't perform anywhere near that level. Moving towards other sport cause it's on the news right now; Tennis players are paid roughly the same across gender. In terms of popularity women exceed male players based on Google searches, however on the court, male players attract higher rating and more sponsors. Overall, both genders are pretty close to being evenly tied. I haven't looked into UFC but the woman's division seems to be as popular as the male division. Just sharing random information. :) Cube b3 (talk) 04:16, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

List of Vaishya Hindu saints

Hi, you deleted List of Vaishya Hindu saints about a year ago. FYI, it is now back at List of Vaisya Hindu saints along with a bunch of other similar pages (Adivasi Hindu Saints, Hindu Dalit Saints, etc.). There appear to be two users at work here. I'm not sure of the history behind this, but @Doug Weller: has deleted this page before as well. Thanks.--Cpt.a.haddock (talk) (please ping when replying) 16:02, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

Hi Sphilbrick, I created an essay regarding the environmental impact of the Wikimedia movement on Meta and I am now looking for ideas regarding the project. I saw that you're interested in sustainability, so I'd love to hear your comments and maybe even have your support! Thanks, --Gnom (talk) 21:41, 24 March 2016 (UTC)

Great, I'd love to hear your opinion. Thanks, --Gnom (talk) 22:00, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
I'm not sure you would. I've actually spent the last half hour formulating it, but I'm not sure I'm ready to share it - today is the middle of basketball post-season, and that's what I want to emphasize for the next two weeks. Then I'll get back to saving the world.--S Philbrick(Talk) 22:07, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
Okay, then please be so kind and save it for later! :-) --Gnom (talk) 22:18, 24 March 2016 (UTC)

Since you were the admin who deleted it over a month ago when it was A9, I thought I'd let you know that I went ahead and re-created Something Beautiful (Jordan Smith album) rather than take it to AfC because it clearly passes muster now. Cheers! 🖖ATinySliver/ATalkPage 20:53, 25 March 2016 (UTC)

Template Cite isbn

I'm not disputing the deletion, I'm just interested to know why this template was deleted. I found it useful when I had a book I was regularly using. If I made a mistake in the citation, I could just correct it once and it would update on all pages. Peaky76 (talk) 16:51, 29 March 2016 (UTC)

Undeletion of Draft: Blue Oyster Art Project Space

Hi Sphilbrick,

We would like to have the page Blue Oyster Art Project Space undeleted (deleted one month ago), so that we can resubmit another draft with more verifiable citations and sources. We have taken measures to change our name in order to correctly follow the best practices of Wikipedia's requirements. We will endeavour to keep this draft active by reviewing it weekly as it is a high priority for us. Please can you advise us on what is our next step to take in order to revive the draft. Sphilbrick - I loaded another image for Gary Kendall, the one that is preferred. This image was first loaded in may 2015, and had to be removed it would take me 10 months (until recent) to locate the photographer. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gary_Kendall.jpg. Thanks for deleting my tests

Hi. Just a quick thanks for deleting my user page tests ('cause without a history, there's no thanks link/button).

Incidentally, I was attempting to reproduce a possible one off glitch; ever seen a page creation that succeeds, result in a return to the pre creation state? I have.

I created User:Fred Gandt/test "test" test (which I'll keep for future tests), and instead of being given the expected result (as it is), I was shown the default this page doesn't exist etc. AFTER creating it. I refreshed and got the expected result.

Since I'd never seen this happen before, I wondered if it was a repeatable bug (possibly to do with the quotes); it wasn't. Any ideas; one off glitch? fredgandt 12:54, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

Not sure why it happened. WP:VPT is the best place to ask.--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:00, 10 April 2016 (UTC)
Yep. I'll post later. Probably nothing. Have a great day. fredgandt 13:21, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

Private(ish) explanation to keep the conversation simple at the tech pump

Hiya.

So the way it works is roughly this:

  1. When you visit any wiki page, your browser gets some resources that make it work.
  2. One of those resources is the code from MediaWiki:Common.css which lists all the ways certain content is displayed.
  3. If we add a new class to that page which defines this numbering system, everyone will see the numbers in any table that names the class (like naming wikitable or sortable).

The little example in my sandbox uses a class that your browser currently has no information about, unless you add the code somehow, like to your common.css (not the site's). That way, you can see the example working, but you're right, nobody else (without the code) will. So, it needs to be added to the site's common.css file/resource in order to be deployable as an option across the wiki.

I hope that wasn't too patronizing. That is never my intention. If you're still not understanding, I can explain again with different words (I have taught many people to code). fredgandt 20:20, 11 April 2016 (UTC)

I understood that adding the code to my CSS would make it work for me but not for anyone else. (I did miss one minor detail but it’s minor.) I’m half tempted to add the code because it would help me, but it could have unintended negative consequences. For example, if I understand correctly (and I may not), if I had the CSS code, I will see a table which has numbering on the left column, but most readers will see something else — I think blank entries. That will lead others to think there is an error and perhaps attempt to fix it. Even if they don’t, it will mean a mainspace article looks like it is poorly created. I don’t think it’s appropriate to do this in a mainspace article. If I were talking about something in my user sub pages, it would be one thing, but I don’t think this is appropriate in mainspace. As a related problem, I am likely to forget that I have special code. I might be explaining to someone how to count the number of coaches in the current year, and my explanation will make no sense because they will see the page differently than I see it. That’s a problem.
As you have probably seen, the problem has been solved and it is been implemented in the Polish version of Wikipedia. I’m now trying to figure out what needs to be done to enable it in the English Wikipedia. I much prefer a solution that works for everyone rather than just me. I do appreciate the time you talk to create some code to solve the problem.
I also appreciate the fact that you posted here rather than cluttering up the village pump with a discussion that's tangential to the main point. I wish people did that more often.--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:58, 12 April 2016 (UTC)
  • It seems my explanation was not good enough; here's a hopefully clearer explanation:
The table class wikitable that we add to table markup to define the way it looks, works by feeding the browser of every Wikipedia user code obtained from MediaWiki:Common.css.
If we add the CSS I provided to MediaWiki:Common.css, then every Wikipedia user will see the numbers by any table that defines its class e.g. numbered, just like every Wikipedia user currently sees wikitables the same way.
The example in my sandbox requires a CSS class that is currently not defined, which is why you'd need to add the class definition to your own common.css file to see it work.
  • Regarding the JavaScript solution:
In order for the solution to be visible to all Wikipedia users, the required code would need to be added to the source of the table sorting methods applied by calling the CSS class sortable on any wiki table.
  • My personal feelings on the JS vs. CSS solutions:
Since the line numbering is only a visual indication of the rather arbitrary row numbers, the CSS solution is more appropriate, as it is itself only a visual indicator.
The JavaScript solution requires that every table where the row numbering is desired, must physically contain a column of semantically redundant numbers with no baring on the content subject.
The CSS solution would require only that the table class be defined, and no extra unrelated data would need to be added to the table(s).
The CSS solution can also be applied to tables that are not sortable if desired, and also without adding any semantically nonsensical extra data to the table contents.
I hope this is a clearer explanation. fredgandt 20:58, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

Alza got moved to Talk:ALZA instead of ALZA?

Hey, sorry for not putting the template on the article page instead of the talk page, I think that's why it got moved like that... Could you please move Talk:ALZA to ALZA, and Talk:Alza to Talk:ALZA (in that order)? I'm sorry about the confusion, I really should have put that template on the main page but I was worried that it'd screw something up. Thanks! Garzfoth (talk) 18:20, 11 April 2016 (UTC)

Done @Garzfoth: I vaguely wondered why only the talk page was being moved, and just guess that the article had been moved without the talk - probably should have checked.--S Philbrick(Talk) 18:24, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
Sorry to bug you again, but the pages don't seem to have been moved? I tried purging the cache several times, accessing it from another browser, etc. Garzfoth (talk) 19:09, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
I was initally surprised you said move Talk:ALZA to ALZA, I expected you to say Talk:ALZA to Alaza, but then I decided you were trying to back up to the way it was, then ask for the proper move. I thought I did what you asked, but I may have done it wrong. Can you repeat what you want? --S Philbrick(Talk) 19:19, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
Actually, I should not have said "repeat what you want" because I can reread what you asked. However, I did make two moves, but your response suggests they did not end up where you want. Can you identify now what should go where, and I'll try to do it?--S Philbrick(Talk) 19:22, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
I have to go out, will address in the morning--S Philbrick(Talk) 20:02, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
Okay, I'll reexplain in more detail, I know it's confusing.
Once again, sorry about the confusion. Garzfoth (talk) 20:36, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
@Garzfoth: I think it is now done. My apologies for contributing to the conclusion. For some reason, I thought the goal was to get the article at the title without the CAPS, but it appears the goal was the opposite. Please check to see if I've made things better. If not don't hesitate to let me know what needs to be done.--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:02, 12 April 2016 (UTC)
Yep, that's perfect! Thanks!! Garzfoth (talk) 21:42, 13 April 2016 (UTC)

Would you be able to undelete those pages, as I will go ahead and clean them up since I was unaware that those had issues on them. Thanks! Kevin Rutherford (talk) 12:45, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

@Ktr101: I restored all but 150th Special Operations Wing, which I did not delete. I see that it was deleted as part of a copyright investigation, so you’ll have to take that up with the admin who deleted it. I did not remove the templates from the restored articles, see may have to act quickly.--S Philbrick(Talk) 12:54, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
if it takes some time to sort out SOW and the dependent pages are deleted again, ping me back after you get SOW sorted out, and I'll restore the others which I presume a redirects.--S Philbrick(Talk) 12:55, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
That works, as I have been clearing up these based on the fact that it is so ingrained in the articles, that it is easier to chop down everything to just the infobox, and start anew. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 13:02, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

Endless Summer tracks

Could you explain why you deleted Template:Endless Summer tracks? My closure of this TfD was delete all except Endless Summer tracks and one other because of a misunderstanding among the delete rationales. Every person who favored deletion stated they favored it because navboxes already contained this info, but as someone pointed out in the discussion, navboxes did not exist for these two track lists. ~ RobTalk 13:12, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

I saw a list of templates to be deleted which specifically identified this one is an exception. I went through and deleted the others and make sure to save this one. Sometime later, I was looking at some list, and thought this was one ahead simply missed and forgot it was the exception. My mistake, I restored it.--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:34, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

Question about article deletion

Hi. You recently deleted my article on Coconuts Media. After re-reading the guidelines you sourced, I understand that perhaps some of the references might not have been deemed significant or notable enough, but some surly were, like the SCMP one. It surprised me that the article was tagged for speedy deletion rather than a cleanup. Were all the references really unusable? Crystal Wilde (talk) 07:59, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

@Crystal Wilde: I see that I deleted a draft but it was part of a move. I also see:
Draft:Coconuts_Media_(2)
My guess is that the move request was not properly formed but I’m not sure. In any event, I think the draft above is the one you’re looking for.
FYI, new posts belongs at the bottom.--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:29, 16 April 2016 (UTC)

Dawn M Liberi

I have started a draft of an article about Dawn M Liberi, the U.S. Ambassador to Burundi. There has been significant coverage about her. @NidhiNidz: The page I deleted was deleted because it had been abandoned for over six months. In some cases, it would be important for you to know why it was deleted because that might affect what you should do, but not in this case. Feel free to create the draft. If you haven't read Wikipedia:Your first article I urge you to do so, and has some useful advice. Good luck.--S Philbrick(Talk) 12:41, 16 April 2016 (UTC)

@Sphilbrick: Hey sir, I submitted my Draft:Param Singh, but it shows in the review that a Page with the same name exists. When I checked the page it had nothing it was just redirecting to his show page. So, what do you think my Draft:Param Singh will be accepted? Can you check it and tell me if its according to the guidelines. It would be great if you can help. Thankyou. :) NidhiNidz (talk) 11:35, 17 April 2016 (UTC)
