Prod notification

Hi! You wrote in my talk page that I forgot to notify the author of an article I have prodded. Actually I remember that I checked the author's contributions, and his last one was in 2007. Much improved. I'm a softie when it comes to inclusion, so I think it meets the guidelines for inclusion, but I wouldn't be surprised (not be willing to put up much of a fight) if other found it problematic from a notability/promotional aspect, so continue to work on that if possible.

My main concern at this point is that you have citations attached to sections. That is discouraged. It should be easy to fix in most cases. The Fact section will be a little harder, but try finding some intro sentence describing the type of info in the table.--SPhilbrick T 15:22, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Sanandaj

Hi Sphilbric and thanks for your recent work on Sanandaj. As I write there the official name of the city is Sanandaj, according to many sources like Britannica, BBC Weather, etc and all other variants (Sanandej, Sanandj, etc) should be moved to this name. Dear SPhilbrick: Thanks for your message saying that I contacted you correctly. Since then, I have enlisted the help of a journalist friend of mine who has read many more Wikipedia articles than I. Do you understand how PROD works? Someone proposes deletion for a legitimate reason, in this case, not meeting the standards of notability. The notice is left up for seven days, during which time anyone can say it shouldn't be deleted, and the PROD notice could be removed. No one did.

As a suggestion for going forward, if you think the information belongs in Wikipedia, consider adding a section to the CD article. If it survives, and grows to be big enough, it could then be split off as a separate article.--SPhilbrick T 13:39, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

you kindly removed the article: Life Guru - Discovery Health Channel, sighting the reason notability.

Whose notability are you refering to as an excuse for removal?

This 15 episode discovery health channel T.V series created in association with Endemol was presented to wikipedia with all information acurate and correct.

If you are not capable of doing the required research to verify this then please request someone else do it.

How about a call to Discovery health UK, or to one of the near million viewers that watched it?

Put the page back up please. I have no desire to work out how the hell to use wikipedia but suggest that those who claim authority do delate pages at will have to do some kind of basic research course first.

Hi, I've noticed you've been deleting quite a few articles proposed for deletion, but you seem to be deleting them before they've had their seven days. They shouldn't be deleted (unless, of course, they're eligible for speedy, in which case one should select the relevant criterion) until at least seven days after the time they were proposed for deletion in UTC. For example, Green Brook Hockey Club was tagged at 07:14 (UTC), 7 December 2010, which means it shouldn't be deleted until 07:14 (UTC) on the 14th, which is about 5 and a half hours from now. I see that you deleted a former member of the Manitoba parliament under an CSD:A7. I've never seen that before - for unsuccessful candidates, maybe, but not for elected politicians. if you were concerned about it being a long term unreferenced BLP, well that isn't a csd criteria yet and we are working on the backlog. Are you seriously arguing that a list of three items, none of which were referenced, the tallest of which was 137 feet, is really a notable list? 137 feet wouldn't make the top 40 in DC, which is notorious for not having many tall buildings. American spelling.

Hi Sphilbrick. Based on the info on your user page, I am assuming you can help with my query. I was reading the article bungalow and noticed that 'storey' (meaning a floor in a building) was spelt without an 'e'. I was about to correct this when I noticed the article was written in American English (neighbor not neighbour). Is 'story' a spelling mistake or not? "Story" is the American English spelling. I'm familiar with many English/Am English differences, but this is one I hadn't known. Is it "storey" in British English? If so that would explain something, because I was involved in editing a bio in which the person's last name was "Storey".

If you need to make multiple changes, there's an option in user preferences to add an editing toolbar. I think that has the ability make multiple changes at once. I say I think, because I'm in IE at the moment, where it isn't available, so I can't tell you exactly how it works. Thanks for clearing that up. I too was not aware of that difference between our two languages. In British English 'story' is a narrative whereas 'storey' is the space between floors. A suggestion

You directed Whysosirius (talk · contribs) (at their talk) to WP:OTRS for verifying permission to use images, but that page isn't really organized to be helpful to end-users, it's more to explain what the team is for other people who do administrative work here. For people who just want to donate material the easiest page for them is generally Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If the users already know what they're doing ahead of time and just need to know where to send the information they could also be directed straight to WP:CONSENT. Cheers! My main concern is that it still reads too much like a PR piece. You have a number of references, but most are first party sources. Please read Notability and see the emphasis on third party sources.

You do have some. The Leadership Excellence reference is third party, but it is a blog. Blogs are disallowed in some instance,s allowed in others, but rarely considered high quality references. I didn't check out the Harvard Management interview, but it should qualify. However, one quality source may not be good enough.

The good news is that some exist. You include a Time Magazine interview in one section, but you haven't used it as a reference. It is here and if incorporated, could qualify as a good third party reference.

In short, you have a lot of material which comes from Guttman, but we want to see discussions of Guttman and his ideas authored by others. --SPhilbrick T 20:29, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi , i am mailing you regarding deletion of my article about Mr Harshad Gune. It was tagged because it said does not indicate how or why the subject of the article is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia.

Well i would like to say that Mr Harshad Gune is one of the board members of Open Source Initiative which has wikiepdia page. Here is the link Open Source Initiative and all the board members who are listed there have a wiki page about them . Hence i went ahead and created a wiki page for Mr. Harshad Gune.

So please let me know whether wiki article about Mr Harshad Gune would be accepted or not, so that i can again write a wiki page about him accordingly.

First a minor comment, added just because it has been confusing to some readers. When a page is deleted with a notation that "which does not indicate the importance or significance of the subject", sometimes the reaction is "what do you mean the person isn't significant?" However, the key word often is "indicate". The person might be quite significant in their field, but perhaps the page didn't show the evidence. Please take a look at Notability, in particular, the statement: "If a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject". Now check out the page for another board member Danese Cooper, and notice the multiple references to reliable sources. Compare that to the Harshad Gune page, which didn't even mention that he was a board member, and has very few references, none of which are in general publications. --SPhilbrick T 13:46, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

Walt Dropo

Hello. I was hoping you could do be a favor regarding the Walt Dropo article. Recently the article was updated to indicate that he died yesterday. I reverted the IP who updated the article since he/she did not provide a source and I could find nothing indicating the death. When I asked the IP for a source (see User talk:24.61.153.165), he/she said that he/she was related to Dropo and heard through the family that he passed on last night. Could you help me watch the article to see if it is updated again, and also watch to see if the Hartford Courant or another source publishes something confirming that he died? Am I being too hard?

Hello Sphilbrick. I have been helping out at RFF and came across this article. It has already received some feedback here but I can't say I concur with the reviewer's comments. I agree the article is notable but it doesn't sound neutral, contains peacock language and has no independent sources. I still consider myself to be a bit of a 'newbie' and don't want to tread on anybody's toes so if you have any advice regarding the best way to approach this issue, I would appreciate it. Yoxi Wikipedia page

Dear Sphilibrick:

I would like to create a page for a new company called "Yoxi"--they are gaining some notoriety (see here: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/12/13/DDAE1GOBO6.DTL) so I want to have some presence on Wikipedia for those who hear about us and search. However, being new to Wikipedia, I understand my previous entry was overly promotional and was deleted by you. I would like to try again while eliminating any descriptive adjectives, facebook/twitter mentions, etc. As they say in Dragnet, "just the facts" -- please let me know if I may proceed, and thank you.

Re: Bot editing question

I guess it's just that Cyde is using generic code. I can't see why checking eligibility would be a problem, at least not technically. If you have an idea on how to check eligibility I would happen to have a look at coding a replacement bot, then we can turn Cyde's off somehow. Regards, - Jarry1250 ^{[Who? I haven't done any work with bots, so I don't even know how to look at the code. However, based upon its operation, it appears to update once a day, just after midnight UTC, and add a list of files who prod expiration date is the current day. So for example, in a little over 4 hours, it will be 22 December, and the bot will add to the template all articles with a Prod expiration date of 22 December. My simple-minded suggestion is to change the code so that it adds all the Prods expiring on 21 Dec.

In general, at 12:01 dd.mm.yyyy it currently adds prods with an expiration date of dd.mm.yyyy. I would change it to those expiring on dd-1.mm.yyyy.

In other words, instead of listing prods expiring today, it lists those expiring yesterday. The only tricky issue might be ensuring that dates at the end of a month or end of a year work OK.

If this were implemented, there would be one day where none where added, but from then on, it would add one days worth of articles to the queue. It would mean that articles would go seven days and a few hours before deletion, but that's fine.--SPhilbrick T 19:48, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

Guttman

Dear Sphilbrick:

Your last comments about my article on Howard M. Guttman were very helpful. As a result, I made numerous changes. I removed the reference to the Leadership Excellence blog and replaced it with a link to the magazine's Web site, which provides its most recent list of Excellence 100 Thought Leaders, including Mr. Guttman.

I also added a number of citations of articles written by others to which Mr. Guttman, as a respected thinker in the field, was asked to contribute.

I cited the TIME magazine article, which was not an interview of Mr. Guttman but a description of his work with CEO Paul Michaels and his top team at Mars, Incorporated.

I included a list of the many organizations and institutions who have asked Mr. Guttman to speak before their members.

Finally, I referenced several interviews of senior executives who commented on Mr. Guttman's ideas and how they have put them to use in their organizations.

I hope the addition of these people talking about Mr. Guttman's ideas adds more credibility and neutrality to the article.

Yoxi has potential for an article, but the first attempt came across as too promotional. Whether fair or unfair, it was also hampered by not following Manual of Style guidelines, for examle, sections heading styles and references.

My suggestion: read Referencing for beginners and Manual of Style, then start a draft article in a user subpage. Such as User:Ballark/Yoxi

The SF Chronicle reference is very helpful. It may not be enough, so if there are other independent soruces, it would help a lot.

It appears that both my NANOCOAT wikipedia page and my username (IPM2) have been deleted by your patrol;

1: Copyright infringement that is mentioned to justify NANOCOAT Text deletion refers to my own original text that can be found of course in several websites, including CORDIS from the European Commission who funds this project that I coordinate, and other sites that have copied this abstract for their own database (as BIOINFOBANK); should I ask for a copyright of my own original text !!?? I have also added the website links of the companies involved in the project as partners, if this is not allowed of course I can delete these links!

2: Username IPM2 is the acronym of my company name: International Project Management, Plating & Materials, the NANOCOAT project coordinator; if I should use my own name (Pascal NEGRE) no problem, just let me know !

I see that another admin blocked IPM@ as a user name. This is because we do not allow promotional usernames. See Wikipedia:Username policy. You are encouraged to register another name.

Nanocoat was deleted because it was a copyright violation. You might find it odd that we would delete material you have written but the policy does make sense.

First, some people are under the mistaken impression that one can give permission for material to be used only by Wikipedia. This isn't the case. Once text is added to Wikipedia (and not deleted as a copyright violation) it can be used by anyone (with proper attribution). It can be used anywhere, for education use, or to make a buck, and you no longer have the ability to stop them from using the material. In an extreme situation, if you were writing the text on a contract, expecting to be paid, you might find that the client can simply copy the text from Wikipedia, and not have to pay you. So one of the reasons we are careful is for your protection. Even if that isn't an issue, you might not have the authority to grant a license to Wikipedia. I've written papers for journals, and I have to ask permission to quote myself. If you write text for another entity, you may well have given them the copyright. You cannot then use that same text in Wikipedia without getting their permission. I don't know what exact arrangement exists between you and the organization that published the material, but we start with the assumption that the organization controls the copyright, and you have to provide us with evidence of permission if you wish to use it in Wikipedia.

In addition, we allow people to edit Wikipedia anonymously. We do not ask for evidence that you are who you say you are, so we cannot just accept at face value that you are the original author of the words. Again, this is for your benefit.

It may be that an article on Nanocoat is appropriate for Wikipedia (but it is of no interest to us that the European Commission wants such an article. Wikipedia is the sole judge of what belongs on Wikipedia. If you'd like to try again, I suggest you create a new user name, then start an article in a user subpage (let me know if you want to know how to do that.) If you want to use words existing in another site, or a close paraphrase of those words, we have to arrange for permission. It would be easier if the context was rewritten, but if you want to use a close paraphrasing, let me know and I'll let you know what steps are required.

For an article to survive, it will have to show evidence of Notability, substantial coverage in reliable sources independent of you and the project. Hope this helps, please ask if you have any additional questions.--SPhilbrick T 16:11, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

It is coming along nicely. The AfD nomination will run seven days, at this point, the only clear opinion is "keep" so unless some deletionists show up, I think it should survive. If for some reason it doesn't, poke me and I'll help you take the next steps.
