File:Girl Scouts of Japan.svg

Did you warn anyone about that before it was deleted? What was the process? Never seen that happen before, we have images on all the Girl Scout national associations. Please advise.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 15:10, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

How do I research this OTRS 2016101310006644?--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 15:29, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Off topic, per "(2009). The Wikipedia revolution : how a bunch of nobodies created the world's greatest encyclopedia." do you still think that holds true? If you'd asked me 10 years ago, no doubt, but now, seems like it's... g'night, and please respond to the above.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 15:34, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
@Kintetsubuffalo: OTRS refers to Wikipedia:Volunteer Response Team, a place where mostly non-editors right into Wikimedia with issues. While I am not permitted to share the exact contents of any email without permission (other than to other agents), I can share that we received an email from an official representative of the Girl Scouts of Japan. Among other things, they noted that the SVG image is not the current image. You can see the current image at their main page:
http://www.girlscout.or.jp/
I urge them to provide the more recent image so that I could incorporated as a fair use image but they declined. Given that the SVG image is not the current image, it made sense to remove it from the article and once removed it became an orphaned fair use image so I deleted it.
According to my understanding of fair use policy, you might try scraping the current image from their website while I do a lot of fair use image work I prefer that people send me the file.--S Philbrick(Talk) 15:43, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Thanks-that's usually how we scrounge the images anyway, is that okay to "scrap(e) the current image from their website"?
Couple of questions in my head, a bit of a rant, then bedtime (1 am here in Japan)
1) If I grab the (icky, American-not-at-all-Japanese-looking) new logo, can they still OTRS and get it knocked off again?
2) I have the original woven badge in a desk right here with me, and it bums me that they killed it, as that must be one of the images I am proudest of during 11 years here. Two graphist friends of mine, LadyofHats and Tsange, helped me get that just right, and it was beautiful. Too bad the Girl Scout bureaucrats don't agree. The regular Scouting program here in Japan is the same way, and it's a buzzkill...back to topic... is there any way (I'm mentally prepared for "no" but hoping...) that I could get a png copy of it? I know stuff isn't really gone, just goes where they put the Lost Ark...
Japan is full of tiny-minded bureaucrats that can't find a friendly workaround. No is just no, and they make me tired. Today I had the same runaround at city hall, yesterday the post office... Scouting is no better and is dying here. Thinking of bailing after almost 9 years here...
Anyway, thanks, good night, and please think about my request.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 16:02, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
@Kintetsubuffalo: I don't have the authority to give you permission to scrape a copyrighted image from a website, but my understanding of fair use policy is that you are permitted to do so. If you do so and add it to the article and they write into OTRS, I will first note that I can't be guaranteed to pick up the ticket although it is likely. If we do comply with fair use policy they will not have a rationale for requesting removal. If I think we've complied with fair use policy I will reject the request — if they push it I will forward it to legal and accept what legal determines to do.--S Philbrick(Talk) 16:08, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Sorry, I meant request 2) (sheepish grin) Re: 1) It's easier to apologize than to ask permission, is my motto.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 16:12, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Not sure I'm following that last clarification, so just checking to make sure we are caught up.--S Philbrick(Talk) 16:37, 20 October 2016 (UTC)
Aaaaaaigh! We had a big Scout/YMCA event this weekend, all the girls were wearing the emblem that was on the page a month ago, or some color/pattern variation thereof, nobody was wearing the new girlscoutcookie corporate logo! So the new one is not even something they wear! I was so livid I could have spat (well, no, it was a Scout event, so I had fun, but still...) #WTFJapan! :-o --Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 04:45, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
@Kintetsubuffalo: Your forbearance was obviously the right response. The other right responses to try to contact the organization as it sounds like there's some misinformation within the organization. (Obviously it is impossible to believe that a large organization could have any misinformation anywhere right :) I'm sure you are better equipped to identify who to talk to than I am but if for some reason you can't track down contact information, I can request permission to give you the contact information of the people at contacted us. I can't do so without getting their permission.--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:42, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
As bad luck as I have trying to contact the SAJ, the Girl Scouts must be 10x worse. Japanese bureaucracy is, well, what they're known for. At this point I'll just pass and save myself the headache. Just wanted you to know, I guess.--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 13:45, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

Talk page restoration

I hope you don't mind but I restored User talk:Imjusssayn as it was deleted under CSD G7 even though it was a user talk page. I only noticed as I was going to leave them a message regarding reliable sources and saw that there had previously been a talk page that had been deleted. --Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 23:21, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

@Ponyo: Thanks for letting me know. I usually pay look for that, but when it come to user requests, I mainly check that they are the sole editor (other than some maintenance edits) and that they requested it. --S Philbrick(Talk) 23:25, 22 November 2016 (UTC)
Usually I would ask first but I know you take on a lot of the grunt work at CSD (thank you!), so I assumed it just slipped through. Cheers,--Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 23:29, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

Copyright question

Hello! In "Dracula in popular culture" you mentioned copyright issue re http://atheistjewoftheus.blogspot.com/2014/05/hellhound-angelus-hecate-count-dracula.html as the reason why you removed my edits. Could you explain why and what copyright has to do with those edits? I mean I can't figure it out. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.147.17.75 (talk) 13:40, 24 November 2016 (UTC)

Hello S. I just removed this EL. As the series hasn't even aired yet I started wondering if having this link in the edit history is some kind of copyright problem. If not no worries. Thanks for your time. MarnetteD|Talk 01:12, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

@MarnetteD: It is my opinion that the removal was justified, but I do not think it is a copyright issue. We permit links to copyrighted material - our removal of YouTube is not because the material is copyrighted, but because it is highly likely that the YouTube material is a copyright violation itself, and we don't want to encourage that. To be honest, I know almost nothing about Yahoo TV, but I am assuming it is not reader generated content, and they probably respect copyright, so I assume it was removed as a EL as a violation of EL rules, not because it is a copyright violation. While I am active in copyright, I learn something new everyday, and know it is a tremendously complex area, so don't hesitate to push back if you think I have it wrong, and we can check with Diannaa or MRG.--S Philbrick(Talk) 01:33, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for your detailed reply. I only just looked at the edit history for the article and realized that Ian Thompson had removed the EL that I was worried about. It is the "Watch Sherlock Season 4" EL that I was afraid might be a problem. I removed the Yahoo link because there was no info at that sight about the show. It still may not need removal but, after noticing my snafu, I wanted to make sure that we were talking about the same thing. Apologies for the confusion. MarnetteD|Talk 02:00, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
I was a little puzzled as well for the same reason. My answer related to the Yahoo site. Let me check the other one.--S Philbrick(Talk) 02:49, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
@MarnetteD:I am not 100% sure that it is a copyright problem, but my browser refused to open the link after identifying it as suspicious, so I erred on the side of caution and revdeled the addition and deletion.--S Philbrick(Talk) 02:53, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the follow up S. Cheers. MarnetteD|Talk 02:58, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

Another copyright question

Hello! In "Dracula in popular culture" you mentioned copyright issue re http://atheistjewoftheus.blogspot.com/2014/05/hellhound-angelus-hecate-count-dracula.html as the reason why you removed my edits. There were multiple problems. You copy and pasted some material from another site. With rare exceptions, contribution should be written in your own words. In addition the source of the words was fully copyrighted and we cannot use language from other sources unless it is licensed in a way compatible for use in Wikipedia, which this was not.--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:46, 24 November 2016 (UTC)

Cross-posting from my talk in case you didn't get the ping. A user has themself added an OTRS tag to this file. I don't have OTRS permissions, so there's no way for me to look at the permission email. They mention your name on the file, so I was wondering if you have time to have a look at that ticket and make sure this image is okay to keep? It was previously deleted as copy vio. I have family visiting, so I'll check tomorrow.--S Philbrick(Talk) 16:37, 25 November 2016 (UTC)
@Diannaa: Yes, it is understandable that it was viewed as a copyvio, as a number of their maps are on their website, but they have been donating a number of maps, with a suitable license, and this is one of them.--S Philbrick(Talk) 16:49, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

OTRS ticket 2016050310022619

Would you please offer some advice about an issue I noticed at WP:BLPN (here). It concerned claims regarding the subject of Badr Jafar (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views).

The immediate issue concerned the claim "He is of Iraqi Shia background". That was handled by an OTRS volunteer (diff) in May and is fixed. There was a fair bit of pushback from an enthusiast who restored text, but they were eventually separated from the topic.

A representative of the subject says that the same OTRS ticket 2016050310022619 also stated that another claim in the article is incorrect (see Talk:Badr Jafar#Jafar Jafar). The claim currently reads:

His uncle, Jafar Jafar, is a nuclear physicist who lead Iraq's nuclear programme under Saddam Hussein.

Two references are given. One makes no mention of the subject and so is not relevant. The other has some by-the-way comments about who is the brother/son of whom. There is no mention of "uncle", but interpreting the brother/son claims allows "uncle" to be inferred. I would challenge the text purely on that basis, but would prefer to get a statement about the OTRS situation first. I asked about it here but got no response.

Would you mind checking whether OTRS ticket 2016050310022619 contains an assertion that Jafar Dhia Jafar is not the uncle of Badr Jafar. Do you have an opinion on whether the challenged text should be removed? Thanks. Johnuniq (talk) 01:45, 25 November 2016 (UTC)

@Johnuniq: I trust you understand I am limited in what I can say about the contents of the ticket.
I literally haven't read it so I can't reveal much. I'll start by noting that there are multiple emails involved, well more than 10. There were several edits, then Mdann52 made an edit. However, there are several emails following that edit which have not received a response so my guess, as yet unconfirmed, is that the claim about the contents of the OTRS emails have not yet been actioned.
Let me start with the obvious question. Why is this question coming to me rather than the OTRS agent who is the owner of this ticket? --S Philbrick(Talk) 20:45, 26 November 2016 (UTC)
Sorry about the trouble, and my request is probably moot due to Mdann52's comment at the article talk. I am taking it slowly—I wanted a confirmation about the OTRS situation, then I plan to ask the person who last restored the text what they think, then remove it. I had hoped to get an opinion from an OTRS insider about the merits of a case like this, although I understand that there is no specific policy so it boils down to judgment.
Re why I came here, I looked through WP:OTRS and found WP:Volunteer Response Team#List of volunteer response team leaders (OTRS administrators) where I picked your name because your contribs showed you were active, and I have seen your work. My link at "I asked about it here" above shows there was no response earlier, and while wondering whether to post again I saw the user's talk was besieged with a bunch of people moaning about getting a arbcom election message, so I preferred to avoid adding to the turmoil. I would value more opinions, but I now have all that is needed regarding OTRS, thanks. Johnuniq (talk) 00:30, 27 November 2016 (UTC)
@Johnuniq:No trouble at all, although the issue looked tricky, and I wanted to proceed carefully. OTRS is badly backlogged, and I am trying to address that, but I have noticed on occasion that trying to move too fast is counterproductive. As ironic proof, had I taken the time to read your whole message carefully, I would have noticed your final link, but I missed it until you mentioned it again. Had I seen that, I might have responded differently. I am happy to see that the issue is now moot.--S Philbrick(Talk) 01:37, 27 November 2016 (UTC)

Deleted picture

Hi, I noticed that you deleted a picture I loaded onto Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Jimmy_John%27s_Owner_Jimmy_John_Liautaud.jpg because there was a duplicate copy of this picture on Commons. Unfortunately, the picture on Commons has since been deleted as well, due to the fact that the Commons/OTRS people never saw a permission letter (at least not withing the 19 days since it was uploaded and subsequently take down) because the permission letter was sent to Wikipedia, and not Commons. I am hoping you will be able to re-upload that picture, and keep it up until the picture on Commons gets full permission, and then we can take down the picture from Wikipedia. A permission letter will be sent soon to Commons, but in the meantime it would be nice to have that picture back up on the article about Jimmy John's restaurants. I certainly appreciate your help in this matter. Thank you. Wineconnoisseur2016 (talk) 09:12, 28 November 2016 (UTC)

The permission letter shouldn't go to Commons, nor to Wikipedia. It should go to OTRS, which is part of Wikimedia but neither Wikipedia nor Commons. That said, there is a queue for Commons and one for each of the Wikipedia's such as the English Wikipedia.
@Wineconnoisseur2016: If you can tell me the ticket number of the permission email (all emails to permissions addresses automatically receive a canned response that includes a ticket number) I can look at the permission statement, and if it is sufficient, I can undelete the image.
(Sample addresses look something like the following, with " -at- " replaced with "@")
  • permissions-en -at- wikimedia.org
  • permissions-commons -at- wikimedia.org--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:35, 28 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks so much for your help with getting the picture back up. What address would I use to send the permission letter to OTRS? Thanks again. Wineconnoisseur2016 (talk) 09:17, 29 November 2016 (UTC)
@Wineconnoisseur2016: The permission letter has already been filed and processed.--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:27, 29 November 2016 (UTC)

File:Tom Holland as Spider-Man.jpg

Hi Sphilbrick. Would you mind taking a look at this and see if any special needs to be done? This is similar to what we've discussed before at User talk:Sphilbrick/Archive 72#File:Logo of the Falcons of Mount Zawiya Brigade.png in that we have an editor uploading what they feel is an "updated version" of an exisitng (non-free) file, but which actually looks like a completely new file instead. As before, I can tag this with {{Orphaned non-free revisions}}, but not sure if there's a better way to handle this. I posted a note about this at User talk:Richiekim#Updating image files, but still wondering if there's a way to discourage this kind of thing from happening before it happens. Maybe there's a way to add a "warning" to the Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard or the "Special:Upload file" that opens when an editor clicks on the "Upload a new version of this file" link on a file's page? -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:36, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

This will require some thought, and research, and per my note at the top of the page, not something I can do easily at the moment. If you think this is timing critical, let me know and I may be able to find some time tomorrow evening, otherwise, I;ll try to address it when I am home.--S Philbrick(Talk) 00:58, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the response. No big hurry here. I saw you're busy in the real world at the moment, so apologize if it seemed like I was expecting immediate action. It was just something we had discussed before, so it's something I'm trying to pay more attention to when I come across it. FWIW, I posted somethig on the uploader's page and am waiting to see if they respond. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:29, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
No problem, wasn't sure whether you saw the message. Happy to look into it, but wanted you to know that I cannot at the moment.--S Philbrick(Talk) 01:36, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
Hi again S Philbrick. I've found some more with the same issues at File:Power Rangers (2017 Official Theatrical Poster).png and File:Resident Evil The Final Chapter poster.jpg. These have have multiple different editors uploading completely different files as "updates". I'll post on their user talks, but maybe you can look at these too when you have the time. Thanks for letting me know about my edit being incorrect

Sphilbrick,

I would like to know specifically what I did wrong. I thought that through my numerous revisions of Intelligence Quotient article I wanted to add to the Self Test of Intelligence article with respect to citations I had adequately covered all authors and supporters. The Self Test article was missing a link to IQ, whereas every other word introduced into that article was further referenced on Wikipedia I thought it only fitting to add the IQ reference. Let me know how I can accomplish this appropriately.

I also left a link to a page which explains how to do the edit properly. Please let me know what you do not understand.--S Philbrick(Talk) 17:10, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
As additional information, the specific edit in question is the one where you copied material from another Wikipedia article. That is permitted, but it must be done in a specific way as outlined in the link I provided. However, when an edit is reverted, our software automatically reverts all consecutive edits by the same editor so it may be that subsequent edits adding citations and references were perfectly fine and get swept up in the reversion. Please read how to copy material within Wikipedia and feel free to try again.--S Philbrick(Talk) 17:13, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

Not feeling great

It is getting exhausting for me at Fake news website. I think I may need to step away for a while. I fear that in a short period of time the whole page will get chopped up and merged into "yellow journalism", which is being used as a pejorative and epithet rather than small piece of contextual history, on the talk page. If you want to look over the page, that would be appreciated, and good luck. Sagecandor (talk) 20:29, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

If you are exhausted, I urge you to take a break. In my multiple years here, I have seen many situations where an ambitious new editor gets very involved in the subject. So far, so good. However, I have what some editors get so invested in the subject material that they begin to think anyone who has a different opinion about the content is part of conspiracy to hurt the article. In some of those situations, the ambitious editor reaches a point where they respond inappropriately and eventually get blocked or banned. I wish to emphasize that I'm not suggesting you are there yet, but I've seen this many times before, and urge you to take a break. The article will not disintegrate without your involvement. You might be unhappy at some changes that occur over the next few weeks, but if you take a break and come back refreshed, you'll be able to contribute positively.
As an example where I see some sign to be concerned (and I will post on the talk page shortly) is your response to someone regarding yellow journalism. I think it is perfectly appropriate for someone to note that section purportedly explaining the difference between yellow journalism and a different concept that doesn't use the term yellow journalism is problematic. Step back take a deep breath and think about that. I think you are concerned (and I share the concern) that the article may transmogrify into an overly broad discussion of issues such as yellow journalism. But please don't overreact to someone who makes perfectly legitimate points.--S Philbrick(Talk) 20:48, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
You haven't seen the talk page history. Other user accounts have actually tried to suggest the entire article be done away with or merged into "yellow journalism", or just deleted. Example by blocked user at [1]. Compare [2] with [3]. Now compare that with comments by recent user accounts arriving at the page. I'm not an admin, I'm not the one that blocked the user that did this [4]. These are just the facts of what has occurred recently. Sagecandor (talk) 21:15, 21 December 2016 (UTC)

Draft:Red Sky Warning (novel)

Hi Sphilbrick,

What is the copyright violation?

14:12, 21 November 2016 Sphilbrick (talk | contribs) changed visibility of 2 revisions on page Draft:Red Sky Warning (novel): content hidden (RD1: Copyright violations) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Decimusmaximus7 (talkcontribs)

@Decimusmaximus7: We have some conventions that are not immediately obvious. New posts on a talk page go at the bottom of the page, not the top. Editors are requested to include information in edit summaries about the edit. Not all do but it is considered a good practice. If you click on the "view history" tab of Draft:Red Sky Warning (novel), You'll see that I explained in the edit summary that the material you added was copied from a Facebook page. Even if those are your words, they constitute a copyright violation unless proper permission for the words has been arranged.--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:28, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

File:Alexandra Bastedo The Champions 1968.jpg and transfer the first upload of the two to Commons, as the proof of the image being in the public domain is the complete photo and back without copyright marks. I tagged the file as keep local because this was not transferred there. Thanks, We hope (talk) 14:28, 26 December 2016 (UTC)
