Second opinion requested

Hello, I hope you are having a happy new year. I was hoping you could give me a second opinion on the G6 speedy deletion I declined on IFK Uppsala (disambiguation). This redirect was targetting IFK Uppsala, which I interpreted essentially as a disambiguation page (albeit one with an infobox and two sourced sentences) and the nominator did not believe was a DAB page because it had referenced material and no {{disambiguation}} template. Would you mind taking a look and letting me know what you think? Thanks. –Grondemar 19:54, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

@Grondemar: I may be missing something. I don't see any recent edits to that page not a speedy nomination nor a declination. That said it appears to be neither fish nor fowl. It's sort of an article in sort of a dab page but I'm not sure it should be either. We don't generally need a dab page when there's only two items; we can use hat notes. However, if we look at the content in the three separate articles there's barely enough for one article let alone two and definitely not three. One option is to merge the whole bunch into one proper article. (FYI, happy to see you editing again.)--S Philbrick(Talk) 22:53, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

CFD on Commons for UConn categories

FYI I opened a CFD on Commons here to try to align the naming conventions of the UConn categories to be the same as they are over here. This would make it a lot easier to link Commons categories for articles over here. I was posting on that noticeboard to get some views on general policy not to debate the specific situation. As you can see, it is even clear that's the right noticeboard for the policy discussion but it definitely is not the right location for the specific debate. That's quite alright. It is quite common in Wikipedia to need to distinguish between general policy issues and the specific application of a policy, although for obvious reasons there is often some overlap. In this specific case, I felt that are guidance on policy was lacking so I thought it would be useful to get some general guidance. That isn't going as well as I had hoped.
I do want to respond to your specific issues, although I will be away for almost a week starting in the morning so I may or may not have a chance to work on it before I return.

Sounds good. I know that the origin of the company is an important issue but its not due to POV or other issues. It would be important to mention due to the information surrounding the company, it often states that it is an American, Dutch or British company when it is in fact Venezuelan (most of its workers are from there as well). Columns error

@TheOldJacobite: The problem arises because the columns want to have a rectangular area that is too wide to sit left of the infobox, so it has to go below it. Sometimes a clear template helps; I didn't expect t to work and it did not. One option is to consider whether the list has to precede the reception section, if you could swap them, the problem will go away. Thanks! I thought the infobox was the problem, and there's no way to make it shorter. Yes, I think I will switch them. As this is a documentary, not a fictional film, the rule about the cast coming second doesn't really apply. If someone disagrees, they can revert me, but as I see it, it's the only solution. I added |colwidth=15em, which gives three columns on my screen. It will not do so on all screens, but I think mine is a pretty typical size. On wider screens, it will probably show four or more columns. FWIW, I think three columns looks better also. – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:31, 17 January 2017 (UTC)

Deletion of The Connection (Band)

Hello,

I see that the article for The Connection[1], a band from New Hampshire, was deleted on January 8, 2017. The deletion code (G5) suggests that it was submitted by a banned/blocked user and not edited substantively since creation. I've used the page before and found the content valid and useful. Is there an easy way to get it restored and considered "valid"?

@CForce: Unfortunately, I don't believe that will be possible. There's an obvious tension between, on the one hand, our goal to provide useful content to readers which would support restoration, and our need to keep editors who refuse to follow policy from being able to contribute. Allowing restoration reduces the incentive for editors to follow reasonable rules. Not every editor takes the same position, so someone else may be sympathetic to your request but I will not restore the article. You are welcome to start over and create an article about the band yourself if you do not have a conflict of interest.--S Philbrick(Talk) 16:24, 19 January 2017 (UTC)

Fair use?

@Unscintillating: It's my opinion that the passage is far too long. You mentioned that fair use concerns increase when the quote is more than 300 words but as you may know, there is no bright line limit. A quotation of 300 – 400 words used by The Nation was deemed to be not fair use, so if there is a number it is almost certainly south of 300. I believe the copyright regulars in Wikipedia have made the conscious decision to stay well below that number for the simple reason that if you get too close to the limit you might win in court but that would be expensive.
While one might argue that inclusion in an article is different than inclusion in a discussion page, I don't think the law makes that distinction. I know I have cringed on occasion when I see a discussion about whether something is a copyright violation and someone posts excerpts of the source material and the Wikipedia page for compare and contrast. I understand the goal but I think we technically commit a copyright violation if the copied material is too long. However, in many examples the copied material has been under 300 words but we are still arguing that it is too close so we may be in a position that it violates our internal rules but does not violate copyright law.
I didn't do a word count but if this is 800 words it's far too long and I think it should be removed do you want to do it or should I?--S Philbrick(Talk) 16:36, 19 January 2017 (UTC)
I see that The Nation case was unpublished work, which this is not.  However, the intent here appears to be to give information from behind a paywall and may have been large percentage-wise.  Since I see screenshots of material from Newspapers.com, for all I know these services realize that getting their name mentioned in the context of a flawed copy has benefits.  Lots a issues I don't have experience with.  But I'd say that there is no downside to a rev-del of the one diff.  Unscintillating (talk) 01:16, 20 January 2017 (UTC)

Hi, are you able to restore the prior version of File:JUMO Logo.png. It was incorrectly licensed as fair use leading to a non-free reduction and revision deletion however I have corrected the licensing to "PD-logo", allowing the larger version to exist. @Dinocako: There are hundreds of copyright issues every week. I've addressed 54 in the last two days. If we spent the time to fix every one of them, we would do nothing else. I don't think you fully comprehend the magnitude of the copyright problem. It is a struggle just to keep up with the incoming flood by removing such violations. You can help us by not committing such violations. I'm sorry some noninfringing valuable work was lost but there's not enough time in the day to address the flood of issues. (As an aside, I continue to be stunned that some people compose their edits in the edit box as opposed to off-line in an editor. I'll type a few words or maybe a sentence into an edit box but anything longer and I want to have an off-line version in case something is lost. Undeletion request

Greetings, Sphilbrick -

I'd created a new page in 2015 (Draft:ID Wholesaler) and went through several iterations to make it compliant with Wikipedia guidelines. On the last iteration I submitted, editor Onel5969 informed me that I needed additional citations in order for my page content to be considered for approval.

It took a while, but I finally have a viable citation to incorporate into my content about ID Wholesaler (two, actually).

Can you please undelete it for me so that I may move forward on this?

Hi SP! I think your instincts may have been right here. That content looks to be from [1], part of a 2009 newsletter. The section in question was written by Bill Taggart, who elsewhere in the newsletter is stated to be the editor. CrowCaw 00:02, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

I'm still not quite sure what happened, it looked clearly like a copy, but the claimed copy was from the article itself. I've seen false positives arising from a move of a section to another part of the article, so I reverted myself. Please ask for more information if you do not understand copyright issues or if you think I was mistaken that it was a copyright violation. @MarkHSmith:Normally, I include a URL to the source texts in the edit summary. I see that I did not in this case, and for that I apologize. The key edit is the one at 18:52, 21 January 2017 which added about 4K bytes of information. Of the many subsequent edits were edits to that section, some were not, but it is a fact that the way our software rollback works that if we have to rollback an edit the system rolls back all edits associated with the same editor at the same time.
That edit is no longer viewable because I have revision deleted it, but it is a copy and paste of the material in the section titled Ancient Prices. See link
You mentioned that it was inadvertent; I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how that could be.
As an important aside, I've learned from painful experience never to simply type an edit into the edit box when it is more than a sentence or so. Stuff happens; sometimes the system freezes up, sometimes edits get reverted inadvertently, so for a variety of reasons I compose edits and an off-line editor and then copy the material into the edit box. That way, if something goes wrong I don't lose my work.
We can provide copies of edits in many circumstances but not when they are copyright violations. Please be aware of something that many editors misunderstand; it is not acceptable to copy and paste material from another source and then rewrite it so that it isn't an exact match. Modest rewriting leaves it as a close paraphrase which is still a copyright violation, and even if it is changed enough so that it is no longer a copyright violation, the original violation is still in history and needs to be removed.--S Philbrick(Talk) 20:47, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

File:Power Rangers (2017 Official Theatrical Poster).png once again

Hi Sphilbrick. We've discussed File:Power Rangers (2017 Official Theatrical Poster).png once before at User talk:Sphilbrick/Archive 72#File:Power Rangers (2017 Official Theatrical Poster).png, and thought that things had been pretty well straightened out, but the same thing that happened before has happened again. An editor has "updated" the file with a new and completely different version. I've posted something about this on this editor's user talk page at User talk:Sb1990#Updating image files, but not sure what effect that will have. For some reason, this particular file seems to susceptible to this kind of edit, perhaps because there do exist multiple versions of this movie poster in circulation. I'm not looking to get anyone blocked because I believe the uploads are being made in good faith. I am, however, if there's a template or something which can be added to the file's page to inform editors that they should upload completely different versions of this poster as a new different file and not as an update. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:19, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

The second is that the material you added was a copyright violation. It may surprise you, but this is true even if you are the original author of the material. Typically, OTRS agents have ten thousand edits, usually many more and have a couple years experience, often more.
We definitely need more agents, I am almost drowning trying to keep up, and our need for agents with skills in other languages is quite acute, but I think it would be best to have more experience first. It was in the article a couple weeks ago, and as I said, a Valued Editor struck. I... long story... could revert those edits, and deal with the flak. That would be the quick option.
