Replacing templates with links

Is there a reason why you are replacing things such as Template:SI electromagnetism units incorporated into articles, with a link to a rearranged table in an article SI electromagnetism units] containing nothing other than a table? cite mess

hi tdogg,

you edited Petroleum fly, changing the way citations work in there. this way of doing it has two major disadantages:

• makes source quite hard to read
• no way to accurately sort references.

so, as a result the page IMO is messed up in source, and in display, in order to fulfill the needs of a bloated and not quite useful template. that's why i'm doing a Footnotes section with reflist, and then a proper references section, sorted by year. i just wanted to know there are good reasons to stop this, and that this is driving quite some people away from editing pages that have in effect been vandalized in their source. sorry to sound a little bit harsh, it's nothing personal, and i believe that you're doing this with the best intentions, but it really hurts to see good pages go down the drain of obfuscation. Please see also WP:CITESHORT. i would say let's not try to convert each other. i only kill the inline cite templates when i'm editing an article in depth and just cannot work with the source. maybe there are valid reasons to use them in some contexts, but i think at least the two ways of doing it should coexist for now.

Question

Hello TDogg310, nice to meet you. I wanted to first express my appreciation of the work and edits you made to wiki'izng' Che Guevara. I did however have one question of clarity. You switched the dates from the Middle endian form (used in the United States) of Month/Day/Year to the Little endian form (used in most other nations) of Day/Month/Year. The issue was previously discussed with relation to the article, and it was decided to use the Middle endian form ... with that said is there a specific rationale for why you changed these dates, or do you merely believe it looks better/works better/makes more sense etc? Whenever I come across an article that I notice has inaccurate or insufficient internal links, I fix those as well as change the date format if need be to the standard Little endian. It is sort of an OCD response, and I don't see how it could cause problems. I didn't realize that it had been decided the American date format would be used exclusively on the Che Guevara article until after I changed the date format for some of the dates to Little endian. TDogg, no problems were caused at all, I was simply curious if maybe there was a wiki policy on date listings etc. I also didn't want to revert them, or make any adjustments before speaking with you about it - (I'm still not sure what to do to be honest, as I can see the rationale for both ways). TDogg, The vast majority of your wiki'ning of the article has been excellent and is much appreciated. However, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind reverting solely the dates to the Middle endian format. The reasoning being that it was previously decided that since the page was mostly read in America that it should reflect that particular audience. The construction you preferred is very common in journalism and on Wikipedia, but there are also objections to it, and I never use it. Re: Caesalpinia kavaiensis

Hey, I saw your edit summary and thought I would chime in with a little FYI. User:Polbot, which is run by User:Quadell is working on creating articles for Wikipedia:WikiProject Law/United States federal judges. I guess in the past it did work on creating articles for the IUCN Red List. Caesalpinia kavaiensis was tagged as an orphan by another bot, User:Addbot, which is run by User:Addshore. This article was tagged because it appeared on one of three lists here. These lists may no longer be updated, but you can see from whatlinkshere, that it was orphaned before you added it to Hawaiian tropical dry forests. I forgot to mention: I was monitoring the orphaned articles by using the orphan=yes paramter in the project tag, but I see that somebody has removed it from the template without telling me. Good edits, but be careful with stuff like this. This information is true, but was simply lacking sources. Another editor added one part back in with a source, but that still leaves out its state ranking, which should be put back in. categories

Hi,

I wonder if you're aware that we only put articles in the most specific categories available. For example, if an article is in Category:Extinct flora of Hawaii, then it needn't be in Category:Flora of Hawaii nor Category:Extinct plants, because both these last two are parent categories of the first. On the other hand, an article can be in Category:Extinct flora of Hawaii and Category:Endemic flora of Hawaii because neither is a parent of the other.

I do lot of category cleanup, and I've noticed that I'm cleaning up a lot of this kind of stuff behind you. I'm not complaining; I don't mind doing it. If you prefer to move through quickly and leave a few loose ends for me or others to clean up after you, that's fine with me. I just thought maybe you didn't know.

Double redirect

Hello. Last night, you moved STA sniper to Scout Sniper Platoon without addressing the redirecting pages. In some cases, this created a double redirect that had to be fixed. In the future, when you move a page, you should take care to correct these double redirects, and I recommend correcting the redirect on any high-use templates as well (such as navboxes). Ceramic Heating Elements

Thanks for the message re Ceramic Elements and heating. Sorry to bother you further but there arose another question or two.

If electron carriers are made available in ceramics upon the application of heat and thereore some resistance is overcome allowing a resisted flow, then logically one would assume: more heat = more available carriers. How then does one get MORE heat by turning the voltage up. Doesn't more heat/voltage then reduce resistance and give less heat? I realise i must be missing a point somewhere or just went DOH! on you.

Also, are they some sort of special ceramic or blended with a none ceramic, because as i have always understood it, ceramics are used as one of the best insulators as in powerlines - even high voltage/hot ones and arcing things like switches ergo also 'hot' but highly resistive.

Sorry for the obvious lack of basic knowledge, my area/hobby is more Gedanken Experiments in physics of time and space. Good luck with your studies, sounds like you are very passionate about your work and the world sure needs more of that right now especially. Also read through your use talk page and just wondering whether you might be Hawaiian? Don't mean to be rude. Have a personal reason for asking but don't know if this is the right place to continue. Is there somewhere more private to chat directly with someone on Wiki or is that poor form? And if so how does one do it? Sorry again for my ignorance but you seemed like a nice person to ask. Ok, well I apologize for my mini-freakout. There are six Everglades articles. The first I wrote was the ENP article, when FA standards were a bit looser than they are today. For the others, however, I spent many hours trying to get the species names right, linking, searching for the right ones, etc. I appreciate the South Florida rockland article you wrote, and kept most of your structural changes, but the capitalization must be consistent throughout the article. Then I took a closer look; the work was created in 1915, but we do not have a date it was published. {{PD-US}} notes the latter, not the former. Coromandel Ebony

To answer your question from 2009 in this move comment, because the article, when I created it, was in fact about Coromandel Ebony, Diospyros melanoxylon. However, later one anon put in this confused text about D. celebica, and then a later anon "fixed" the article by converting it to be exclusively about D. celebica - but leaving it at its old name. Article titles

Wikipedia is for the common people. The policy at WP:UCN states that "The term most typically used in reliable sources is preferred to technically correct but rarer forms, whether the official name, the scientific name...". And in all of these cases, these plants are commonly referred to by their common names. The editors at Rose seems to realise this. Yet you moved Pachyrhizus erosus in 2010 to that unheard name, from the original name of 'Jícama', a much more common name. Whatever 'decision' for a 'standard convention' for plants was decided by some editors is a decision that should be ignored as it goes against policy. And no editor has to follow guidelines, acts, or rules set by anyone unless stated so on a policy page. Please change the name of that article back to 'Jícama'. Go ahead and change the article back to its previous title. I was a bit hasty when I made the switch to use the scientific name as the title.
