WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Rollback granted

Hi That Coptic Guy. After reviewing your request, I have enabled rollback on your account. Please keep the following things in mind while using rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle or RedWarn.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into trouble or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:25, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

Hey @HJ Mitchell - thanks so much for granting the request and for your time. I'm really excited to be growing as an editor on Wikipedia! That Coptic Guy (let's talk?) 15:29, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

Pinging

Hi, noticed you attempted to {{Hidden ping}} everyone at Talk:Brecon Beacons National Park, but you did it in an edit where you did not sign the post in the same edit, therefore it did not work (at least for me), if you need to ping, best to do it as a separate signed comment. See Help:Fixing failed pings. Just raising awareness, many thanks. DankJae 21:38, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

@DankJae - Oh shoot… I thought I fixed it in my second edit!! I tried signing it in my second edit for it to work, but Wikipedia never gave me a notice that the pings went through—indeed I guess it did fail again lol. Thanks very much for the heads up and suggestion. That Coptic Guy (let's talk?) (contribs) 21:44, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
Hi @That Coptic Guy, you only changed the time, I believe pings analysed the added content, and both the pings and your userpage must be linked and added in the same edit. As you only added a date change, I guess it could not find your username in the edit so did not work. I have pinged them all in another comment on the RM. DankJae 21:47, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
Really appreciate your help! Still getting used to all of the templates and how best to use them. That Coptic Guy (let's talk?) (contribs) 21:48, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Drawing ellipses with SVG path

Hi That Coptic Guy, in case this interests you... cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 10:35, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

@Cmglee - Thank you, this is really cool!! A 99.9% file size reduction is pretty nuts, and what I think is even more interesting is that you learned a new technique through it all (even as one of the most prolific SVG artists out there). Kudos :-) That Coptic Guy (let's talk?) (contribs) 14:56, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
My pleasure, and thanks! The reduction was possible because the original plot was hugely inefficient. The 7 KB version is roughly the size if the ellipses are typically drawn, but I tried to push the envelope of what's possible. Cheers, cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 16:23, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

Changes to Nashville Statement page reverted

Hi, I noticed that you reverted my changes to Nashville Statement. I did not see a reason specified. Can you give me some feedback as to why you did that? WillRefvem (talk) 05:11, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

Okay, I just saw your edit to my talk page that you deleted. Your criticism may be valid when it comes to calling Paige Patterson "disgraced," which I suppose is a matter of opinion. It is however a matter of fact that he is no longer the president of SWBTS. It is also stated on Rosaria Butterfield's page that she does not identify as ex-gay, and I contend that the current state of the page misrepresents this fact with the ambiguous wording "former lesbian activist." It is my contention that in that one case, the current state violates NPOV and my edit corrects it. It is also a matter of fact that Ken Ham is a young-earth creationist. I don't see how facts can violate NPOV. WillRefvem (talk) 05:17, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
Hi @WillRefvem - thanks for reaching out. I left you a message on your talk page. In essence, your edit on that article (adding the "disgraced" descriptor to Patterson's title in the article) did not seem necessary. However, upon reviewing the other 3 edits besides the one I just mentioned, those seem totally appropriate and I can undo my reversion of those (apologies for that mistake).
Also, the link to your talk page that you have in your signature links to the talk page of a totally different user, who hasn't contributed since 2011. If that account (BuckRefvem) is indeed you, then you can say so. But it seems you're using this account (WillRefvem) now, so I would fix that talk page link. Just a heads up that that redirect can come off as confusing. That Coptic Guyping me! (talk) (contribs) 05:18, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
Yeah, sorry about the confusion w/r/t my username. I changed it awhile back and for some reason my talk page didn't change. Not sure how to change it. Not sure I have the time to figure it out. Not sure I care lol. WillRefvem (talk) 05:21, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
No worries, WillRefvem :) I undid my reversion - sorry about that once again. Fixing Paige Patterson's title to something more neutral would be best, though. The other descriptors you used for Butterfield and Ken Ham are just fine.
Also, to fix your signature and link it to the appropriate talk page, visit Special:Preferences, scroll down to where it says "Signature". Then, in the area where you're able to edit your signature, paste this where you have info about BuckRefvem: ([User talk:WillRefvem|talk]) (just add an additional bracket before and after the ones already on there). That Coptic Guyping me! (talk) (contribs) 05:28, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
Okay, thanks for the tip. Let's see if it works. I suspect it still might redirect to the old name. Do you happen to know how to fix that? - Will Refvem (talk) 05:40, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
Fixed :) All I had to do was remove those redirects. If you click on your own talk page in your signature, it should be fine now. Changing your signature wouldn't have actually done anything (would've looped back to the Buck account). So I'd remove the space in your signature to make it "WillRefvem" and not "Will Refvem" (sorry, probably just gave you a headache with all of that) That Coptic Guyping me! (talk) (contribs) 05:42, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

Re this, not a username violation but worth considering if these articles are notable enough for inclusion. The COI template is appropriate though I doubt you'll get a reply after 8 years. :) -- Euryalus (talk) 20:05, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

@Euryalus - Haha yup, just read your note on WP:UAA, thanks for taking the time to consider the request and point me in the right direction. Who knows, maybe his email is set to notify him about talk page notices! That Coptic Guyping me! (talk) (contribs) 20:08, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
Hope springs eternal I guess!. Admire your optimism. On a quick glance I doubt either article satisfies WP:NPROF, but haven't yet gone to the effort of matching them against the criteria. WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, Chicago PCN02WPS, and London AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Hello, can you help me to to nominate 2023 Malappuram boat disaster to ITN? Thilsebatti (talk) 04:24, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

Notability and ITN/RD

Hi! I noticed you commented on an ITN/RD nomination opposing it for notability reasons. However. RD nominations have this disclaimer at the bottom "Recent deaths of any person, animal or organism with a Wikipedia article are always presumed to be important enough to post (see this RFC and further discussion). Comments should focus on whether the quality of the article meets WP:ITNRD." Would you mind please striking out the bit about notability? Thanks! :) Cheers! Fakescientist8000 13:02, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

edit

The goal of it was formal accuracy, ie. a better encyclopedic standard of neutrality
It was subordinating outside American support semantically to progressivism, when that is inaccurate for example with regard to Chomsky's self-definition.
The other part was the linguistic style, I wanted to clarify the first paragraph under the heading. It needs some work to add a translation of the Korean word as well 213.134.189.242 (talk) 16:45, 18 April 2023 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.134.189.242 (talk)

The WikiCup has run every year since 2007. With the 2023 contest now concluded, I will be standing down as a judge due to real life commitments, so I hope that another editor will take over running the competition. Please get in touch if you are interested. Next year's competition will hopefully begin on 1 January 2024. You are invited to sign up to participate in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors. It only remains to congratulate our worthy winners once again and thank all participants for their involvement! ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:50, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
