Links removed from Working Dogs and Sniper Rifles[edit]

Thank you for taking the time to comment on the links I added and to clarify the policies. I think the pages linked have significant highly relevant information that is incremental to what is presented on the Wikipedia article page itself. It is true the pages carry advertising, but that does not detract from the information content.

Of course I will bow to the judgement of more senior editors.

Not a problem, though the more I look at it, the more I wonder what I'm getting myself in to :) .:.Jareth.:. babelfish 00:53, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much for the barnstar! Its been a long bit of work, but at least the article itself is stable now. .:.Jareth.:. babelfish 16:55, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dog training links for expert-dog-training.com[edit]

Hello Trysha and thank you for your reply. Although I am a bit disappointed about the fact that you removed my links, I will do my best to contribute to the dog related article on Wikipedia while expanding my website. I went through teh links you provided and I have read the Wiki guidelines, so I am sure my future contributions will be better suited for this ingenious site.

I plan to develop Expert-dog-training.com into the first website that offers specific, breed oriented dog training methods. This is why I thought some links toward my website would prove useful for the visitors of Wikipedia. Wikipedia offers some nice breed information, while the links toward my website would also allow a person interested, let's say, in Bandog training to get some specific techniques that are focused on this dog breed. For Bandog, for example, the link would be http://www.expert-dog-training.com/Bandog-training.php

There is one other reason why I wish to help Wikipedia grow - a few relevant links would get interested visitors to my site. I will soon post a request on the website asking people who have dogs to contribute, if they wish, with their own dog training techniques. I will also offer visitors the chance to send me photos of their dog, which I will post in the related dog training article. Speaking of that, I read your Wiki profile and noticed that you have a Basset Hound - the funny thing is that the article for this dog breed specific training was on my work schedule for Monday. If you wish, I would be more than happy to use a photo of your dog for the dog training article on Bassets. I would also welcome any tips or tricks related to the training you used for your dog.

I hope we will keep in touch and, from now on, I will check with you first before posting any text or links.

Warm regards,

Michael

Just popping in here. I think that links to this site in related articles are appropriate, such as the dog whistle article, where I replaced the link. The site is not blatantly commercial; in fact, I don't even really see anything commercial on this site. IMHO, these pages do provide useful info related to certain articles and can remain there. I can't find where the earlier discussions about these links are, so I'm just barging in here. :-) I'm not sure about the breed-specific training articles; most trainers I know do believe that there are some things that you must consider for each breed (or type of breed) to be an effective trainer. But, again, they don't look commercial to me, so couldn't the breed-specific links be appropriate, too? If you'll direct me to where you've already said something about this, that'd be great so I don't ask you to repeat it. Elf | Talk 18:54, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. Elf, thank you for your remarks. My website is new and small, for now, but I plan to allow it to grow in time and become one of the best breed specific and general dog training resource on the web. It will take a while :)) I hope my stay here on Wikipedia will be beneficial both for this extremely engagin site and for my website. I understand that the spacve reserved for "external links" can't be monopolized and I don't intend to do that. However, from what I know, specific dog training is a niche and there is a lot of interest in it (or at least that's the vibe I got from dog related forums where I did a little reasearch on the potential interest there would be in such a website). Once my site grows a little bigger I plan to contribute by writing articles for Wikipedia on related topics - for example, an article on training old dogs, which I belive doesn't exist.

In any case, I will keep in touch and I appreciate your support adn your patience, as I am still getting the hang of being active on Wikipedia.

Best wishes to you and your dogs! :)

OK, after thinking it over overnight and reading Trysha's thoughts on the subject and Wikipedia's linking policy, I am coming to agree that a link from one or two relevant articles, such as one on dog training and possibly a couple of others, would be most appropriate to this site. Trysha, perhaps we could accrue all the comments on this into one central location (dog project?) so that we could all comment there instead of in myriad Edit Summaries and talk pages and user discussions? Then we could point people there who want to express opinions one way or the other. Elf | Talk 20:51, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
T--good job consolidating. How did you come up with those nifty numbers on links? Write yourself a bot? I'm impressed anyway... Elf | Talk 23:12, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

spam wars[edit]

Sometimes seems like all you have a chance to do is clean up, not do anything new and fun, eh? It's nice to see you on the job. Elf | Talk 18:38, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Newfoundland-puppy-dogs[edit]

No problem, I see your point. And I hate Wikispam. And I'm usually swift and merciless with linkspam, myself. And this one certainly does have some of the savor and aroma of spiced processed luncheon meat.

But, darn it, the stamps are nice... and the pictures of their own puppies are cute. Dpbsmith (talk) 21:56, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Trysha[edit]

Thanks for being so helpful! I wish everyone who provided comments did so like you. Sometimes they can be condescending or rude; lots of people—like me—are just learning, and we learn best when someone corrects us or provides with the proper resources. SidP 18:24, 22 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Advertising pet wiki[edit]

New ikicity We could use a person like you to contribute to this pet wiki city [1] (this unsigned comment was left by CHIMES)

"Ikicity" is right, only more like "ICKicity"--yeah, I don't really need this kind of spam on my user page. Thanks for removing it from mine; not sure whether you really wanted this left here on yours. Oh what fun it is to spam in a one-horse open wiki... Elf | Talk

Sorry everyone i just needed more people to help contribute to my wikicity.

boardgamegeek.com[edit]

Hi, I noticed you had been systematically reverting User:Val42's external links to boardgamegeek.com. I just wondered if you were aware of the discussion at Wikipedia_talk:Counter_Vandalism_Unit#HELP.21. (FWIW, I hate linkspam as much as anyone, but I concur with the view that these links are on a par with our IMDb external links from movies. I have no affiliation with the site.) —Blotwell 08:52, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Shiloh Shepherd Talk Page (re: Content #6.1"Support All Points"[edit]

Hi Trysha, I have posted a question to you under your entry in this section of the Shiloh Shepherd Talk Page. If you get a chance, would you mind responding below my question on the Shiloh Shepherd Talk page, since a couple other contributors also asked me to inquire and I'd rather they see a response directly from you rather than indirectly from me?

Thank you very much. 69.173.135.114 21:15, 29 December 2005 (UTC)Miles D.[reply]

Infobox Dogbreed[edit]

I did some formatting to the box. Can you give some details/examples about what you mean by "show a table line only if two or more given variables are set"? I have Template talk:Infobox Dogbreed on my watchlist, so reply there. -- Netoholic @ 22:33, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

funtrivia.com[edit]

Hi Trysha, how is a link to the archive of dog quizzes at funtrivia.com not allowed?

FunTrivia is a large and well regarded community site, much like imdb, with user contributed content like here on Wiki. Could you please explain why you are deleting external links to the trivia archives there? Thanks!

Breed template[edit]

I updated some text on the dog projects page & added some thoughts & suggestions on the talk page. Stuff looks good. ...you're going to do them all by hand?!? Elf | Talk 08:35, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, I had thought that the existing templates were all pretty consistent, but they are all over the place, aren't they? Yoiks. Well, good luck, you're doing a great job as always; I'm off to bed wayyy too late. Elf | Talk 08:55, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dog wankevandals[edit]

Just an FYI - Your bot changed the think on Dog from simple:Dog link to be simple:Little doggie smell my shit. oops. :) - Trysha (talk) 22:52, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

Uh, thanks, nice. :) Bloody idiots just vandalised the page when the bot was in the middle of the update. Usually this behaviour (updating the redirects) is wanted, but, well, not in this particular case. I was surprised anyway how much idiots dog accumulate. I would have thought politicians are better target than our best friends...

Have a nice day! --grin 10:51, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

FYIs, I've seen this happen before and corrected it in simple english. (I thought it was odd that a bot would be changing it to something bad, so checked the bot's other contributions and they were fine, so then I figured out it had to be the source page). I don't know why it's so popular to vandalize "dog" pages on the various wikipedias. Elf | Talk 18:30, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AKC messed up?[edit]

How come now the AKC info isn't displaying in Azawakh? Is it something I did/something still in the template related to FSS/gremlins? Elf | Talk 23:52, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, that was my typo, then. I looked and looked until I was crosseyed and didn't see it. Thanks for checking. Elf | Talk 23:58, 3 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rottweiler[edit]

OK, I don't have a problem with that as policy, but an edit summary explanation would have been appropriate. User:Zoe|(talk) 21:31, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

panosteitis[edit]

Hiya. You changed this to point to growing pains in the Shiloh Shepherd Dog article, so I created a redirect there before actually reading anything about it. But then I added stuff to that page for dogs, and after reading the links that I inserted into the article, it looks to me like a different thing than that described in that article for children. So I'm thinking that it ought to go under its own article, either panosteitis or growing pains (dog). What do you think? Elf | Talk 20:20, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Admin nomination[edit]

Cool; I'm glad. Then (maybe you're doing this now) could you go to your page Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Trysha/archive2 and put a formal acceptance and sign it where it indicates? And answer the questions. People mostly just want to know that you know what's going on and aren't a weirdo with strange ideas about what "power" an admin has. Then the mayhem, er, voting can begin. I don't do much with my adminship other than quick reverts and occasional deletions, sometimes going to pages with backlogs of things that need an admin to delete or rename, but not often. Elf | Talk 03:27, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and one more thing for you to do (please). I'm going to be gone this weekend, so I can't follow up. When you've answered the questions, your page needs to be linked into the main rfa page so that other people can see it and vote on it. Instructions are simple; see "What_to_do_if_you_are_nominated_by_someone_else:" on Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/nominate. Elf | Talk 03:39, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Please see an additional question that I posted on your RfA. Thank you. xaosflux Talk/CVU 03:11, 10 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Basset Hounds in dog agility[edit]

I just accidentally landed on your user page and started reading (odd how that happens). Just thought I'd mention that I always used to think that Bassets were NOT dogs for doing dog agility. However, there's a lovely little Basset girl in northern california who occasionally does agility and is not only fast but very good at it, too. In fact, she won high in trial, early last year I think, at one trial, beating out all the herding dogs and everyone else, too. (I don't think she's a typical Basset, though--smaller and lighter than most.) Elf | Talk 19:59, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Happy to help. :) Take care, Sango123 (talk) 23:50, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

dog breed template[edit]

It's already wonderful to have the template in place--it was SO easy to change the wording on the FSS and Misc stuff. I've been dreaming of this day for 2 years! Well..pretty close to 2 years anyway. I'm so glad you're doing this.

A thought, though--you don't need to be in such a rush to get through it. At the moment, I've been plodding along wayyy behind you, checking the original vs the current to make sure all the info is being displayed in the new page that was there before, and in maybe 1 out of 6 or 7 pages, it isn't. And I think you're getting a little stressed, because you missed the Podengo FCI info although it was there. :-) This means that I or someone really needs to do all the double-checking, since the process you're using doesn't seem to be completely accurate. You're doing a great job of adding FCI info that wasn't there originally--that will also be very helpful in the long run--but it would be good to be sure that everything else is there, too. It's almost always a missing "xxxstd=?", although there've been a couple missing altnames and such.

I don't really have time or energy to do this, though. Basically what I'm doing is:

  1. Display history page.
  2. Show diffs between page immediately before you started template conversion and current.
  3. Click/hold at top of the old-version column on the date of the page to display it in a new window (in Internet Explorer, just clicking does this automatically).
  4. Scroll down in the history page to see the current table.
  5. Scroll down in the new window to see the old table.
  6. Compare.
  7. Adjust new version if anything's missing.

So it takes time. I've gotten through Bull Terrier but there goes my day. So did you have any thoughts on double-checking the changes? Elf | Talk 00:22, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Man, you're fast! OK, as I said, I stopped after Bull Terrier. I really really have to go do some real work now... probably... Elf | Talk 00:41, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your admin nomination[edit]

Your adminship nomination didn't achieve consensus. Please look at the reasons voters opposed your nomination and this will be a big aid to succeeding in the future. Many initially failed nominees have gone on to be admins later. Cheers, Cecropia 17:30, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Welllll, dang, but you know, it's very good that no one opposed because you're a horrible person or did bad work, just that they want to see more edits and more in the WP area particularly. Man, when I became an admin, 1000 was a lot of edits and no one cared what namespace they were in, although I suspect that having hung out on Wikipedia:Village pump and the predecessor to the help desk and places like that for a little while made more people familiar with me. So if you'd like to let someone try a nomination again in, say, 2 or 3 months or so, you might consider just spending a little time on village pump, anyway. But do read the comments & see where people thought you were lacking, just so you'll know. Thanks for your patience; my bad for not really clarifying what the *current* expectations are for new admins. :-) Elf | Talk 18:20, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

More to convert[edit]

Oh, ha, just realized there's category:Extinct dog breeds, too! Elf | Talk 01:15, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User page edits[edit]

Nope, don't mind. The page is already out of date--sigh--I'm starting the thingk the easiest way to keep update is to recreate it, but that's time-cosuing, too. Elf | Talk 19:26, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry[edit]

Hi sorry i'm new to this

I did not know the rules

i must admit it did seem strange that you are able to just add text and links in that way

Thanks
