Welcome![edit]

Hello, VictoriaR1997, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Shalor and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. You may also want to check out the Teahouse, a community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to helping new users. Below are some resources to help you get started editing.

Plagiarism/copyright violation[edit]

Hi, I received a notification that you had used content taken from another source and used it in a Wikipedia article. Please be aware that you can only do this if you are quoting the source and even then, you can only do this in small portions. In this case you had taken material from Mashable and posted it without any true changes to the article for the Dakota Access Pipeline. Although you did add the source as citation, this is still seen as plagiarism and a copyright violation on Wikipedia and as such, I had to delete the addition.

I would like you to review the module on plagiarism before proceeding further, thanks. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:58, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your account has not been deleted[edit]

Which is why you and I can still post here.

In addition to the links in the welcome message - which you should really check out while exploring wikipedia - you can play through the Wikipedia adventure, which is aimed at younger users, but which I (approaching 40) found really helpful. The initial warnings about plagiarism you have encountered so far might be a bit off putting but let me reassure you that appropriate contributions are most welcome here and it is every editor's hope that you and your classmates will continue to collaborate constructively on the project. It's absolutely essential when contributing, to use reliable sources and (as you are already aware) you can't copy text from them, but must write it in your own words.
Finding a balance between sticking to the verifiable sources while not just making stuff up is one of the challenges which most new users find it difficult to tackle to start off with. That's why I've made some blue links in this post, which link to info on some of the issues you've encountered so far. Thanks very much! Edaham (talk) 03:13, 31 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
