If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me, your course online volonteer, on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}} before the question. Please also read this helpful advice for students.

Before you create an article, make sure you understand what kind of articles are accepted here. Remember: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and while many topics are encyclopedic, some things are not.

Your instructor or professor has set up a course page, were you can find information about your course. It is highly recommended that you place this text: {{Course assignment | course = Education Program:Queen Mary, University of London/Research Methods (Film) (Spring 2016) | term = Spring 2016}} on the talk page of any articles you are working on as part of your Wikipedia-related course assignment. This will let other editors know this article is a subject of an educational assignment and aid your communication with them.

We hope you like it here and encourage you to stay even after your assignment is finished, and agin, do not hesitate to contact me! (tJosve05a (c) 01:52, 24 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The word count for the updated Gigi page is 3778, and the word count for the former version is 3494. So the difference is 284 words. I hope this helps. Cwong33 (talk) 12:35, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Work Method[edit]

Allocation of work and Contributions[edit]

Vyasn: I had decided to use my talk page for the duration of the project, to ensure we had a collaborative experience with good communication at all times. On the page, we communicated tasks and any important information regarding the page such as resources and questions about the assignment. It was a good space to clearly layout our planning using the Wikipedia tools; sections, bullet points, boxes and tables. Out of resources we found, I chose to look through one of the books on M.G.M Musicals which happened to have facts and figures about Gigi, such as the budget and box office figures. It also provided us with a reference for the cast list. The editing was always done, collectively through one of the group member's user account. Vyasn (talk) 14:37, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Laraknauf: I looked through two books about Vincente Minnelli's career for further reference/information about the production of Gigi. Furthermore I uncovered several useful journal articles and reviews about Gigi at the BFI. Together with the group we went through this articles and I then added the Sight and Sound review to the Gigi wikipedia page, as this a contemporary piece on Gigi and it's reception by critics of the time. I also looked into the layout of the page and made some changes in how the Gigi page is structured, to make it more coherent and understandable. These changes can be seen most clearly in the 'Content' box. Together with Vyasn I also rewrote the opening statement to make it a bit more clear and welcoming to the page. Together with the rest of the group I tried to find primary sources for some of the more unclear statements of the Gigi page. Laraknauf (talk) 14:46, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Cwong33: Working with Vyasn, I also used the M.G.M Musicals book by Fordin to edit the article page such as the box office statistics in the info box, as well as adding some information in the box office section. I also fixed some of the referencing issues, such as providing the right link for a Variety article about Gigi, which previously contained the wrong link. I also removed any referencing to IMDB since it may not be deemed a reliable source, and replaced it with referencing to the M.G.M book which is far more reliable and scholarly. Cwong33 (talk) 19:27, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Libertyelise95: I was mainly in charge of looking into the plot. I removed unneeded quotes and removed unnecessary information. I then went through these changes with the group to see if they had any input or advice to make my changes better. I also wanted to clarify the quote about Barbara Walters as the only reference was a copyright infringing youtube link, to which I did research but sadly, this was this only source. I also added some links to other wikipedia pages, such as 'Grey Gardens' to make the article more informative. Libertyelise96 (talk) 15:43, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Obstacles[edit]

We encountered a few problems during the research stage of our project, finding specific scholarly resources on Gigi and also finding references that proved claims on the page. One such instance was the claim about Digital Restoration which was linked to a website that didn't provide any information on the restoration but instead provided an image from the film. In addition to this, the website differed each time the link was clicked, sometimes showing Gigi as a part of their portfolio and sometimes not. By putting this on the Talk Page, we managed to get a response from other Wikipedia users which verified one part of the claim.

Another issue was the Popular Culture section on the page, regarding Barbara Walters. The statement was referenced with a YouTube video that was clearly a copyright violation which made the content unverifiable. After doing some more research, we made the executive decision to remove the statement. The change has been noted on the Talk Page for members of the Wikipedia community to discuss if necessary.

Evaluation[edit]

Throughout this process our main aim was to make the Gigi page resemble some of the Class-A Wikipedia articles which meant looking closely at those articles for comparison. For example, most plots on Wikipedia don't have quotes extracted directly from the film which is why these were removed from the Plot section. Our other concerns included checking for grammatical errors, clarity, concision, copyright violations and overall verifiability of statements and citations/references. These areas have been closely looked at and edited using various research methods. The newly discovered access to online journal databases as well as a trip to the BFI Reuben Library proved to be highly beneficial to us as the film doesn't have many specific scholarly resources elsewhere. The Wikipedia volunteers and community were also extremely helpful during the project, going to the extent of doing their own research about certain issues on the page. We have attempted to make this process collaborative by meeting regularly to research, edit and proofread as per our schedule. Overall, we found this experience informative and definitely helpful for our further research based projects.

List of Changes[edit]

Section Change Comments
Introductory Paragraph First sentence phrasing The original sentence used a lot of description that didn't read correctly. The sentence is now more balanced while giving an indication of what Metrocolor is.
Contents Structure The initial structure of the contents box did not match that of a "Class-A" film page therefore it has been changed for better navigation by making new subheadings under the relevant headings.
Plot Changed for grammatical errors and clarity The plot needed a lot of work in terms of phrasing. It included unnecessary quotes from the film which needed to be removed. It has now been revised.
Sidebar Added a citation/reference for budget The prior source was linked to IMDb which is not considered a reliable source. It has now been referenced using a more scholarly source.
Sidebar Added a citation/reference for box office The box office figure now has a scholarly reference.
Cast Add a citation/reference for cast list There was no source for this information hence it has been added for verification.
Casting Information about Alan Jay Lerner's experiences The quote from Lerner and additional information was added from a journal to be more informative about the casting process.
Musical Numbers Pink Floyd reference was removed The sentence was removed as it as been repeated in 'Popular culture section' and did not belong in this section.
Box Office Information about re-release The new information is about how the film grossed the total box office figure through re-release.
Critical Reception Sight & Sound review added The review was added because it is from a well known film magazine, giving a balance to the type of reviews available on the page. It is also a review from the same time period.
Digital Restoration Time period of restoration added Although there is still some confusion about who did the restoration, a time frame has been added to reinstate that the film was digitally restored.
Popular Culture Links to other Wikipedia pages The point about the documentary Grey Gardens is now linked to other Wikipedia pages for more accessibility to the subject.
Popular Culture Barbara Walters Statement removed The point was removed as it lacked verifiability and also flagged up copyright issues.
References Dead link removed and new reference added The reference for the Abel Green Variety review was a incorrect link as well as a dead link so it has been replaced with correct review and a working link.
