Conflict of interest in Wikipedia[edit]

Hi Wiki-editor8663. I work on conflict of interest issues here in Wikipedia, along with my regular editing, which is mostly about health and medicine. Your recent edits are promotional with respect to Community Health Systems. It is not clear if you are a fan or might have some conflict of interest. In case it is the latter, I'm giving you notice of our Conflict of Interest guideline and Terms of Use, and will have some comments and requests for you below.

Comments and requests[edit]

Wikipedia is a widely-used reference work and managing conflict of interest is essential for ensuring the integrity of Wikipedia and retaining the public's trust in it. Unmanaged conflicts of interest can also lead to people behaving in ways that violate our behavioral policies and cause disruption in the normal editing process. As in academia, COI is managed here in two steps - disclosure and a form of peer review. Please note that there is no bar to being part of the Wikipedia community if you want to be involved in articles where you have a conflict of interest; there are just some things we ask you to do (and if you are paid, some things you need to do).

Disclosure is the most important, and first, step. Here in Wikipedia such disclosures must be made explicitly. Would you please disclose any connection you have with Community Health Systems? After you respond (and you can just reply below), if it is relevant I can walk you through how the "peer review" part happens and then, if you like, I can provide you with some more general orientation as to how this place works. Hi Jytdog,

I am not affiliated with Community Health Systems and have no conflict of interest. I am personally researching large health systems in the United States and thought it would be helpful to add a listing of facilities this company owns as I'm sure many people don't realize the local hospital they're receiving service at is owned by a large corporation. Can you please explain what the problem is with listing the hospitals Community Health Systems owns? Thanks for replying. Quick note on the logistics of discussing things on Talk pages, which are essential for everything that happens here. In Talk page discussions, we "thread" comments by indenting (see WP:THREAD) - when you reply to someone, you put a colon in front of your comment, which the Wikipedia software will render into an indent when you save your edit; if the other person has indented once, then you indent twice by putting two colons in front of your comment, which the WP software converts into two indents, and when that gets ridiculous you reset back to the margin (or "outdent") by putting this {{od}} in front of your comment. This also allows you to make it clear if you are also responding to something that someone else responded to if there are more than two people in the discussion; in that case you would indent the same amount as the person just above you in the thread. I hope that all makes sense. And at the end of the comment, please "sign" by typing exactly four (not 3 or 5) tildas "~~~~" which the WP software converts into a date stamp and links to your talk and user pages when you save your edit. That is how we know who said what to whom and when. I know this is insanely archaic and unwieldy, but this is the software environment we have to work on. Sorry about that. Thanks again for replying. There are a lot of people who come to Wikipedia and want to add content that is not really encyclopedic; they do it anyway, because, well, they "can". One of our most important policies here is called "What Wikipedia is not", (WP:NOT) and one of the things we are not, is a directory (see WP:NOTDIRECTORY) If you want to gather all relevant hospitals that are owned by a single group, you can do that with a category (see WP:CAT) or a navbox (see WP:NAVBOX -- you can find a bunch of them via the handy Category:Navigational boxes)). But assembling a big list and "sourcing" each entry to the hospital's website is not what we do here. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all).
