1345 timeline

I see that you recently created the article 1345 timeline. Could you please explain to me what information that article contains or could contain that can't be covered in the article 1345? AecisBrievenbus 21:15, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

I just came across a message you left at Talk:1345, in which you said "A group of editors decided it would be interesting to try to get a random year article to FA status. This is what we've cooked up so far. Hopefully it catches on..." Could you show me where the discussion was held? The only thing I could find was a rejected/withdrawn proposal at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Years#Turning years articles into prose and a rejected proposal at the Village pump. AecisBrievenbus 21:20, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
It looks amazing. I's even suggest putting it through a peer review and then up for GA or FA. Also, a few other years should be converted to help the cause, perhaps something from the last few decades. - Trevor MacInnis (Contribs) 04:52, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
I agree that the article 1345 looks very good, and that this is an interesting experiment that appears to have worked out very well. My compliments. Regarding the title of 1345 timeline: what would you say to using the word chronicle in the title? Something along the lines of Chronicle of 1345 or 1345 chronicle? I just saw the thread on wikiEN-l and was thinking I should find a primary author to give a barnstar to -- and here I've been beaten to it! Excellent work, boldly pioneering with the simple idea, "prose over lists!" I hope this is an example others will be able to follow. – Luna Santin (talk) 10:48, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

1345

Great work Wrad!!! It was a long time ago that I put this request and I am pleased to see it be realized. This article should serve as a model for all year, decades, centuries and millenium articles. I am also positive that prosing all year article will increase Wikipedia quality. When will you nominate it for FA? Again great work. CG (talk) 15:53, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

I have to say, great job on the article. Since you are already writing 1346, please remove Estonia and the other Baltic states from Eastern Europe (and Sweden too). You should call them Northern Europe (a region that consists of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Greenland, Faroe islands, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania). Thanks H2ppyme (talk) 16:53, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Congratulations! Very nice job. --GwydionM (talk) 18:45, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Happy New Year, Wrad! Remember me? Y'know, JS from Talk:Benvolio? Anyway, I'm registered now, so I thought I could solicit your assistance. I've submitted two articles for peer review, and thought that you might be of some help in critiquing them:

  • Duck Soup. I've listed this article for peer review because, even though I and other editors have contributed much information and references, I'm certain that there are other aspects of this classic film that have yet to be covered. I'd like to hear feedback from you, so that I can get help in improving this (and other Marx Brothers films) quality.
  • Princess Leia Organa. I've listed this article for peer review because it right now seems oddly cluttered and, despite a lot of references as of now, lacks reliable source citations. Although I've already requested another peer review, as long as it helps the articles get better, I've got the time. Any helpful comments will certainly be appreciated, as this should help me in expanding other Star Wars-centric articles.

I value your input. Thanks, and a Happy New Year to you! — Cinemaniac (talkcontribs) 02:26, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the critique, but I'm having trouble understanding how to make the references you describe. — Cinemaniac (talkcontribs) 00:48, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Common interests

Hi, Wrad, it would seem that we have common interests regarding the Bard: Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Henry V are my favorite tragedy, comedy, and history as well, although I have to say that I prefer The Tempest over Cymbeline as far as romances go. I saw it performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company when I was a young and impressionable thing and it's always stuck with me. :) Good luck with further Shakespeare-related Wiki endeavors! R&J

Hi. I haven't been very active in the FA drive, mainly because I've never liked the play much. One thing I did do (not very recently) was add a reference to Benda's opera on the subject. There's no WP article for the opera, but I could knock something up within the next few days (making special mention of the deviations from the play) and activate a link to it, if that would be useful. I actually saw this opera a year or so ago, and have the programme with a synopsis and an article. Any idea when the application for FA might be made?

Incidentally, I have a copy of the 4-vol New Grove Dictionary of Opera, which lists all the operas known to have been based on each Shakespeare play (it lists 25 for R&J, but one of those is West Side Story). I wonder vaguely whether an article entitled something like "List of operas based on plays by William Shakespeare" might be suitable for WP and useful for reference in future GA/FA applications? Most of them wouldn't have links to WP articles, though, mainly because most of their composers aren't very notable! But then, a list is just a list.

Best. --GuillaumeTell (talk) 22:38, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Content review workshop

Wrad, how about starting that conversation at the talk page of the content review workshop instead? That's what that workshop is intended to be for. If you want to work with the Wikiproject, no problem, but the workshop has been active fairly recently and I think scored a win with the recent peer review automation. It also has made an effort to engage editors from different content review processes, to get broad perspective -- e.g. WP:LOCE, WP:1.0, WP:GA and so on. Just a suggestion. If you decide to go with the Wikiproject, I'd suggest at least posting a note at the workshop to let folks there know about it. Mike Christie (talk) 02:51, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

OK, that works. Thanks. By the way, I just realized you're one of the people responsible for that absolutely outstanding 1345 article. That's a simply awesome piece of work; congratulations. Mike Christie (talk) 03:01, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. I might submit that for CE help someday if the need arises, who knows? This really could expand our ability to get things done on Wikipedia. Wrad (talk) 03:02, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

The League of Copyeditors

Hi there, and thanks for your interest in the League. As I implied on the Wikipedia:Content review/workshop page, I don't think the organisation of the requests system is now a problem - in fact, with a little bot-assistance, it seems to be going very well indeed. The issue is purely one of getting the job done - all those requests, and those left over from the old requests system, have to be dealt with. So if you really don't think you're cut out to be a copyeditor, I can only ask that you try and rally support from other editors who might. The only way the LOCE can operate is if we have a substantial member base to keep the backlog of requests to a very reasonable level. That way, the waiting time stays low and the League remains useful. At the same, time, the League is only as highly regarded as it is because it doesn't sacrifice quality for quantity, or thoroughness for efficiency. So if you can put on your copyediting hat, dive in; if you really don't think you can manage it, then try and find others who can. Thanks for your support. Happymelon 22:18, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Gawain refs

If further questions arise about the citations, give me a buzz. As you have seen, I know something about citations and the MOS but not by any means everything. I think what we have now is reasonable, but it's entirely possible that others may not agree. If that happens, it should not be hard to accommodate them. Delay on PR

I'm afraid that I'm going to have to delay the reread on Sir Gawain until the weekend. I hope this is ok. I'm quite busy right now and I need to write that pesky dissertation. :) Awadewit | talk 01:31, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

  • I see Scartol has added a peer review on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. I think it would be best if I waited to do my reread until all of those minor prose issues have been cleaned up. How about we aim for next Wednesday or Friday? Would that be enough time? Awadewit | talk 22:56, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

FA Team

Hi Wrad. I'm wondering two things:

These are related: if the latter can capture some of what we are trying to achieve at WT:CRW right now, it could be a subpage/subproject/taskforce of the former, and possibly engage more activity in your idea to regenerate the FA WikiProject. If not, I'm happy to leave it in my user space as (arguable) humour :) Geometry guy 20:18, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Date style change at Jesus

Hi, Wrad. I will not edit war over this, but instead urge you to self-revert the change at Jesus back to the (admittedly more clumsy) style of BC/BCE and AD/CE style. I think your intentions are good but it's way too premature to be insisting that there is any consensus for the change to BCE/CE. For the sake of peace and a productive discussion, please restore to the longstanding compromise version until the discussion can have its due course. Thanks, alanyst /talk/ 02:26, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

I won't restore it to the a version that violates MoS. I'm surprised that you don't acknowledge that the rules are very clear on what to do and just let it go. I'm sure you don't really care what the dates say. Wrad (talk) 02:29, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
Do you regard the MoS as ironclad rules, or do you think there are times when legitimate exceptions can be made? I believe the latter, and think that the established compromise at Jesus was a pragmatic solution to a thorny problem that had caused ongoing edit wars. It's not perfect, certainly, and I don't think anyone was perfectly happy with it, but that's the nature of compromise: everyone gives a little for the sake of the community. Would you be willing to consider this a possibly exceptional case, and restore the compromise version until further discussion takes place? alanyst /talk/ 02:34, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Hey, Wrad, I agree with you that it should be either BC or AD - one or the other, but I think a good point has been brought up on the talk page that we should probably wait a while before changing the article. In all fairness, it has been BC/CE a while. We should let others have a say before changing it on such short notice and starting edit wars. It can wait a few more days at least... Okiefromokla questions? 02:36, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

If you go against MoS then you re standing on shaky ground and leaving yourself open to more and more debate. If you follow MoS then you can refer everyone there if they have a problem and delete all year discussion from the talk page as unrelated to the topic. I have boldly offered a solution that I don't intend to change because I feel it is the best option. I did nothing wrong and I'm not going to change it back. I'm not going to revert again if someone changes it, either, though. Wrad (talk) 02:38, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Good point. I've been thinking about making a push for Human as well. Maybe I should suggest something that will make a lot of people mad. Dolphins are smarter than people? Okiefromokla questions? 04:19, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

Asking for help on WiKUpedia project

Hi Wrad,

My name is Jarrod and I'm currently working on a project called WiKUpedia, with the goal of providing the one-stop shop for all things KU. We've had a tremendous response from the community since we went live on Sunday but we need help organizing and improving the wiki. We decided to reach out to experienced Wikipedia editors working on the WikiProject: Kansas. You can read a little more about our project in a news story in the Lawrence Journal World I know you mostly write about literary topics, but we would love your help to improve our wiki.

Please feel free to take a look around our project and if this sounds like something that interests you, please respond on my talk page or by email. Thank you so much in advance. Jarrodm (talk) 04:29, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Wrad, did you get in touch with the people at that project? I think you said you were going to but I wasn't sure if you were in touch by email or just wiki posts, and I didn't see anything on the project. I'm happy to post a note there myself but I didn't want to preempt you if you were still planning to post something. Mike Christie (talk) 02:32, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Walt Whitman GA

Hey, Wrad! I had a couple people look over the Walt Whitman article. Could you let me know if it's been sufficiently copy edited to pass GA? Otherwise, the request is still out for the League of Copy Editors - they may take some time and my guess is they won't find much that hasn't been caught. But, I defer to your judgment. Thanks, and hope all is well in your wiki-world! --Midnightdreary (talk) 04:48, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Hey, Wrad... you wanna give Walt Whitman another look and see if we can get its review off "on hold"? It's since been copy edited by the League of Copy Editors. I'm going to be out of town for a few days so I won't be able to take action after tomorrow. Just FYI. I've got two GA reviews going on at once and I'm trying to expedite the process a bit. FA-Team and first mission (MMM)

Dear Wrad,

Many thanks for volunteering to join the FA-Team. We now have a first mission, to help the Murder, Madness and Mayhem WikiProject improve twelve articles towards featured article status. These articles are really interesting, and the person in charge of WP:MMM is enthusiastic about our support, so this mission should be a real pleasure. Please watchlist the mission page and the WikiProject page as well as some (or all) of the twelve articles. The students contributing to these articles are all new to Wikipedia, so please be ultra-friendly towards them.

The coordinator for this mission is Wrad (talk), that's you :-), who may suggest further ways in which you can help. I will provide back-up. In particular, it might be useful for you to indicate which of the twelve articles interest you most (or which ones you are watchlisting) on the mission page. (I leave it to you, Wrad, to be in charge of the mission page, but will be glad to help out in any way you ask.)

Thanks again for joining in. I think this will be a lot of fun for all of us, and hopefully we can make it fun for the students too and create a few more featured articles between now and April. Geometry guy 22:06, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

(Well, that's the pitch to FA team members. If you want to correct or add something, feel free!)

Thanks Wrad: I was about to make exactly the same point about WP:BITE. Geometry guy 18:30, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi Wrad, we don't have a volunteer for the next wikipedia dispatch yet. Do you think you could write something about the GA automation? You'd mentioned that in a previous discussion on the FAC talk page, and I think it might be interesting. I haven't been keeping up with GA changes, and I'm curious as to what's changing. If you don't have time, what with everything else you're doing, that's fine too. Karanacs (talk) 17:19, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

New processes are being introduced that will make it easier to do reviews. Last I checked, DYK was working on making tighter restrictions on what could be nominated due to backlogs. I mistakenly quick failed a list submitted to GAN last week, but have now removed the quick fail notice and notified (and apologized to) the nominator of my error. I did not know I had made an error until I saw your edit summary, so kudos and thanks again, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:07, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

I see that you like shakespeare's works, a good book on his life that you should read is the one by Bill Bryson, I cannot remember the title off the top of my head, but is you search bill bryson into google it should come up. I recieved high distinctions and stuff for my shakespeare related work in high school, so i guess that i could probably help the shakespeare project if i wanted to join, DangerTM (talk) 05:17, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

On the BYU page, could you start the discussion? I need to see specifically why you added that tag so we can fix whatever it is. The burden of proof is kind of on you, and we can't move forward unless you say something. Thanks. Wrad (talk) 15:13, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

I've made you a rollbacker. This'll make fighting vandalism on SGGK easier. As you know, it reverts all the edits by the last editor to the last edit by the previous one in one go. Middle English on Wiktionary

Hey, I was just looking at today's featured article, and thought it was well written. I just thought I'd drop you a note to say that the English Wiktionary has a rather serious (in my opinion) lacking in Middle English. We have Latin, Ancient Greek, and Old English covered reasonably well, but Middle English is all but nonexistent, which makes for some gaps in our etymologies. If you have any interest (or know of anyone else who might), we'd love to have you. If you have no interest in such a project, then let me simply say well done on that article (yes, yes, I realize that no wiki article is ever written by a single author :-)). Game summary

Your comment about not including 9-beating-8 as an upset could affect the effort to make the 2008 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament a GA or FA article. It is evidence that author opinion was used to filter what gets included in the article and that is a clear violation of several Wiki policies and guidelines. You might want to rethink that. Your attempt to reduce the amount of text is valid and I can support that. Perhaps a compromise might be to include all games in which a lower seed beats a higher seed as an upset; just don't describe the 8-9 upset games in any detail. All-star team

Sorry Wrad. I was viewing your reversion of yourself and proceeded to edit an old version of the page. As I'm sure you figured out. Oddly, I received a barnstar for this error. :) –Outriggr § 02:51, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

That has to be the oddest barnstar I've ever seen given. Wrad (talk) 02:56, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
[ec] That is, I accidentally edited an old version of the page. (Or is your confusion about the barnstar?) I don't quite understand the dialogue going on about mistaken FAC nominations and such. The setup of this project (on both sides) is the best model for collaboration that I've seen on wikipedia; well done. The concern about MOS seems disproportionate though. –Outriggr § 03:02, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

Clarify

Hi, Wrad; I hope you're feeling better about the MMM situation today. I left a message on G guy's talk page, to keep them all in one place, that I hope you saw.

I just wanted to say that I still don't have any idea what this refers to; what old wounds and what old edits, what mistake? If it's something that relates to me, I either didn't know or have forgotten, and if it doesn't relate to me, feel free to tell me it's done and no longer matters, but I just want to make sure you realize that even after Outriggr's clarification, I don't know what old wounds are being referred to there, and I don't want you to think I'm digging up some old business.

I also took some time to review all of the starts and stops I've had with this Project, and it seems to all come back to Wassup. I thought he was a class member, and have just found the whole thing to be very frustrating; he noms an unprepared article that others are clearly working on, undoes ref cleanup, edit conflicts with inuse template, and now undoes talk page cleanup. It's strange, but now that I know he's not a member of the class, at least I don't feel like class members are getting no guidance. For example, I went through all of the article talk pages this week and cleaned them up, and he went after me and undid all my work; switching banners is a big no-no, and I can't find any reason for him to have done that. But ... with so many cooks in the kitchen, I know I'd best drop it and not worry about it ... would I take this up with the FA-team, with Gguy, with Wassup, with you, with Jbmurray, on the MMM talk page ... confusion ... how to deal with this while not interfering with the students' work ... so best to let it drop and let him do his thing. It's really best that I stay uninvolved, as I'm beginning to wonder about his apparent desire to undo work I've done, and it's been very frustrating from my end, not because of you.

All the best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 20:36, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

"so best to let it drop and let him do his thing." This has been my strategy. When it seems relatively unimportant (e.g. switching banners), I say what harm is there? --jbmurray (talk|contribs) 21:51, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
Correct; it's cumulatively frustrating to me, but really not worth worrying about. I do wish I could have helped more :-) SandyGeorgia (Talk) 21:54, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the note, Wrad; so it sounds like I wasn't the only one affected by Wassup? I'll just let it go; just wanted to be sure you and I didn't have some old history I wasn't aware of :-) All the best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:25, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

BYU Picture Request Fulfillment

Hi Wrad. I took some pictures of the MOA and some honor code posters and posted them on the BYU article, as you requested. Hope these work! --Eustress (talk) 02:14, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Wrad, you reviewed The Golden Compass article for GAC last month; were you going to check up on it? I cannot tell if you're suggestions were adequately dealt with, so you may want to take another look and see if it should be passed or failed. María (habla conmigo) 14:13, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Wrad, hi! Haven't been in touch much for a while, but I'll shortly be ready to rejoin the FA drive at Romeo and Juliet.

Anyway my question, because I know you do GA quite often, is whether you think Romeo and Juliet on screen is ready to be put up for GA, and if not, what work it might need. Do you have any thoughts? AndyJones (talk) 21:10, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

BYU flagship

If BYU isn't the flagship of the Mormon Church, then what is? BYU-Idaho? BYU-Hawaii? LDS Business College? Think about it. Which school is the biggest? Which has the best programs? Which has the better budget. JackWilliams (talk) 20:16, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

None of them are. The Church doesn't favor one over the other. I've researched this and have been unable to find any official source saying BYU is the flagship university. That's just not the way the Church does things. The BY Universities are centered in the CES, not at BYU. Wrad (talk) 20:20, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
BYU-Provo is obviously the better school by a long shot. It doesn't matter what the Church says in official statements. Wikipedia is about neutral truth, not propaganda. I'll change it back, this time with references.JackWilliams (talk) 20:26, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
I found some more official sources referring to BYU as the "flagship" or the primary school. They are on byu.edu and the quotes are from Karl G. Maeser, Spencer W. Kimball, Merrill J. Bateman, and Marion G. Romney. JackWilliams (talk) 21:35, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

It's time for you to archive your user talk page again.

Have you tried MiszaBot? It works wonders on my talk page and I don't have to fuss with irregularly sized pages or forgetting to archive pages anymore. You should try it!

As mentioned on the WT:UNI discussion, I've sent a single-issue 3RR warning to JackWilliam's talk page. I've also mentioned on T:BYU that there is a clear definition of flagship university and quoting other people who are expressing the term incorrectly does not make it encyclopedic. Hope this helps. You can always go back to WT:UNI for help with this again. I know you and JackWilliams have been at it for some time now. Last time it never escalated to dispute resolution, let's just hope we don't need to go that far for one tiny sentence in the lead of a university article. - Jameson L. Tai talkcontribs 22:13, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

something strange

I tried to leave a message on the tempest talk page and got some weird spam filter about a blacklisted hyperlink. I tried to copy it here but the same one came up - Okay here it is without the offending hyperlink: The spam filter blocked your page save because it detected a blacklisted hyperlink. You may have added it yourself, the link may have been added by another editor before it was blacklisted, or you may be infected by spyware that adds links to wiki pages. You will need to remove all instances of the blacklisted URL before you can save. If you are attempting a section edit, note that this block may even be due to spam links in other sections. Blacklists are maintained both locally and globally. Before proceeding, please review both lists to determine which one (or both) are affecting you. You can request help removing the link, request that the link be removed from the blacklist, or report a possible error on the local or global spam blacklist talk page. If you'd like to request that a specific link be allowed without removing similar links from the blacklist, you can request whitelisting on the local spam whitelist talk page. The following link has triggered our spam protection filter: (link deleted) Either that exact link, or a portion of it (typically the root domain name) is currently blacklisted. Any idea how to fix this?Smatprt (talk) 03:54, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Anyhow - I tried to leave a response. Here it is (I hope) - can you copy it into the tempest discussion for me?

One of the main reasons that the character list was deleted from another article was that these works were literature first and plays second. I strongly disagree. Shakespeare is known as the world's preeminent DRAMATIST and writer of PLAYS. Every play has one thing in common - a CAST list. Every play program has a CAST list. An integral part of ANY play is the CAST. Every edition of the play has a CAST LIST. It simply astound me that anyone would think that a thorough article on any play should not have a cast list as part of that article. Another reason that was stated was that it made the article look amateurish. I have one question - WHY? To be frank - I think the opposite - it make the article look amateurish NOT to have a cast list. Yes - wikipedia discourages lists - but it does not BAN them. In the case of PLAY articles, a cast list not only makes sense, but makes for easier understanding of the synopsis and the various issues that the article covers. Thanks for listening.Smatprt (talk) 04:09, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

real academic world?

Ha! I love this edit. We normally think that the "real" and the "academic" worlds are rather far apart from each other. It's nice to see them brought together! --jbmurray (talk|contribs) 00:19, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
