Hello, YTMichael

Welcome to Wikipedia. Thanks for uploading File:IE10 Wikipedia.png. I wanted to inform you about a mistake on this image that fortunately I saw and fixed before too late. The problem is: You have uploaded this file in context of a free image and had claimed that you were the author. This is a very big and dangerous mistake that newcomers in Wikipedia often make. According to copyright laws, Microsoft Windows is an intellectual property of Microsoft Corporation and any screenshot or derivative work made from it is owned by Microsoft. So, the fact that you shot the screenshot does not make it yours. Please bear that in mind.

In addition, please never use xx/xx/xxxx dates. For more info, please visit Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Dates and numbers § Dates.

Best regards,
Codename Lisa (talk) 07:02, 27 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for notifying! I uploaded a smaller image file which should satisfy Wikipedia's standards. YTMichael (talk)
Hello again. Thanks for the new file. You know, I actually love your second upload with an about dialog box. It is more informative. Do you mind if we keep that version? To give you a better view on the matter, I will upload a lower resolution version of that file. See if you like it. If it was good enough, we keep it. If you didn't, we fall back to this version. How's that? Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 18:25, 27 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you liked the one with the dialog box, sure lower it a bit down (because it looks more bold that way in my opinion) and put it back up :) YTMichael (talk) 18:30, 27 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. Thanks. It is very generous of you. Feel free to take a look at it and make the decision. See you around. Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 18:36, 27 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good! No complains whatsoever. Definitely worth keeping :) YTMichael (talk) 19:42, 27 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8[edit]

Hi, would you be able to upload an alternative version of File:IE10 ModernUI.png showing the Wikipedia main page rather than Google? Screenshots of web browsers are meant to show Wikipedia rather than any other sites. Thanks. Cloudbound (talk) 00:29, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. No, he cannot. WP:NFCC does not allow that. The main page of Wikipedia contains non-free items while this image is completely free. Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 15:06, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Jees, you've been really helpful. Can't say thank you enough :) YTMichael (talk) 08:11, 27 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Can you upload a version of it with the Wikipedia main page and change it to a non-free licence like it is here - File:IE10 Wikipedia.png? Cloudbound (talk) 23:27, 28 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Cloudbound. NFCC says non-free contents are not allowed when free alternative exists. So, yes, he technically can but no. such a thing is not allowed. Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 08:12, 29 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that the NFCC says that, but screenshots of web browsers are meant to show the Wikipedia main page rather than any other. All screenshots of previous versions of Internet Explorer feature the main page. The reasoning is that Wikipedia remains impartial and is not seen to be promoting any other website or business. Cloudbound (talk) 13:31, 29 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I know what other articles do and the reasoning which you just mentioned is worth due consideration. But this image, which is free, will soon be moved to Commons which has no such obligation. Besides, the neutrality issue (which is not grave in this specific case) is further curbed by the use of image in a Microsoft article. So, over all, I think the image should remain as it is.
And I hope we are not bother YTMichael by discussing in his talk page.
Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 19:26, 29 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hello everyone. I'd like to say I absolutely agree with Lisa - that even though this is worth considering, I'd like for the one displaying Google.com to remain there. (After all promoting Google is really a silly thing to think of since everyone uses it in the first place to find articles like the one that image is being used at. So I wouldn't even say it's more of promoting. I'd say it's just respecting the NFCC.) Hopefully this should put this situation to an end. YTMichael (talk) 19:56, 29 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Good to hear from you YTMichael. Just because Google is one of the most widely used search engines doesn't mean we should just turn a blind eye here. If anything, we should use a screenshot with the Wikipedia main page to have consistency with all the other browser articles. It should be quite quick and easy to do too. Cloudbound (talk) 15:00, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you are willing to personally change the licensing on it once I upload the new version of it, I'll gladly do it. –YTMichael (talk) 22:13, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be happy to. Cloudbound (talk) 22:57, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've uploaded a new version showing the Wikipedia Main Page instead of Google.com. The file is as always available here for you to adjust any licenses. --YTMichael (talk) 23:08, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fantastic. Thanks. Cloudbound (talk) 00:43, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Unfortunately, Cloudbound seems to have missed it. First, Wikipedia does not need fair-use rationale for using its own logo because it is rightful use of its own intellectual property. (But the image becomes non-free. Anyway...) Second, every single peace of image seen in that shot need a separate license statement. There is three of them. But they are now impossible to obtain now. Do us a favor, YTMichael: Upload another version and this time save a link to every image in the shot. Post the links here. I'll take care of the license. Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 15:14, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. I am badly in a hurry now; I hope my message is not rude. Sorry. Best, Codename Lisa (talk) 15:15, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Links to images shown here (excluding the Wikipedia logo): Protein Fold, Sandy Oct 29 2012 1815Z, Graham Waterhouse and Plante Mask. Now take care of it.
You are simply marvelous! I'll get busy. Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 05:35, 3 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you change that image, from the screenshot of the *final* version on Windows 8, to that of a *Release Preview* on Windows 7? I couldn't really imagine the reason why you did so. Sky6t (talk) 05:05, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Because it said "Because this image is a screenshot of a proprietary commercial software product, it is not replaceable with a free alternative. However, this image is a screenshot of a software product that is not yet commercially released. Therefore, it must be replaced with an updated version when the product is officially released." I figured I would update it to the latest version (the one on Windows 8 Desktop and the Release Preview aren't the same version it seems - Release Preview is newer). Did I do something wrong? YTMichael (talk) 15:39, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. The sentence you just mentioned predates 26 October, when Windows 8 is commercially released. So, all you had to do was remove the old sentence. I removed it anyway because both Windows 7 and Windows 8 are commercially released. (IE10 is under the terms of Microsoft Software Supplemental License Terms, so what matters is Windows itself.)
So, if either of you wish to discuss which version is more appropriate from another point of view, you can. Licensing issues are no longer deterrent. Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 19:16, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
