Library and University Collections - Wikimedia internship[edit]

The Wikimedia internship in Library and University Collections, Joshua Jackson, commenced on 31st May 2021 - with a 12 week position aimed at learning and writing a high-level report on best practice from other Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums engaging with Wikimedia to open up their collections.
This internships represent the first time that the Library and University Collections have opted to do a prolonged body of work exploring collaborating with the Wikimedia projects so the view is to have the internships (1) document workflows for using Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikisource (2) learn from best practice in GLAM institutions elsewhere and (3) write a detailed report for the library and university collections to engage in open practices as part of the strategy going forward.
Our Wikimedia intern for the Library and University Collections Joshua Jackson spent much of July learning more about the Wikimedia projects and exploring how other organisations have engaged with them. We created a survey for people working with Wikimedia at GLAMS (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) which to date has had 17 responses. Josh got in touch with respondents throughout July to set up interviews to further discuss how cultural heritage organisations can engage with Wikimedia.

Women in Red workshop[edit]

One new Women in Red workshops was held on 30 July 2021.
- 7 new articles were created at the 30 July event inc. Elizabeth Finlayson Gauld (c. 1863 - 1941) who was a leading suffrage campaigner in Edinburgh devoted to working for women’s franchise for many years, convening meetings, taking part in the Women’s March from Edinburgh to London, working with some of the most prominent suffrage campaigners and activists for women's rights. She was also prominent in the campaign for Scottish self-determination and in amateur theatre productions.
- 27 more articles were edited.
- 225 edits in total.

Wikimedia student internships in Summer 2021[edit]

Two more Wikimedia student internships were interviewed and appointed in May 2021 and will conclude on 27th August 2021.

Open Collections - Wikisourceror internship[edit]

The Wikimedia ‘Open Collections - Wikisourceror’ intern, Erin Boyle, commenced work on 7th June 2021 - with a 12 week position aimed at documenting workflows for Wikisource and Wikimedia Commons and helping out Library and University Collections team understand very clearly the 'how and why' of opening up collections through the Wikimedia projects.

Open Data and Knowledge Equity internship=[edit]

The Wikimedia ‘Open Edinburgh – Open Data and Knowledge Equity’ intern, Clea Strathmann, commenced work on 7th June - with a 12 week position aimed at supporting the University of Edinburgh's commitment to the teaching of data science and its commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Decolonising the database event by University of Brighton (https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/decolonising-the-database-tickets-156226340189). Viewed panel discussions on historical issues with recording collections and history and how these impact EDI and reflect persisting issues of colonialism.
Edinburgh Learning and Teaching Community Meeting - Discussed Wikipedia work and projects, including research into diversity issues and how Wikipedia can support diversity.

Met with:

Lucy Panesar - discussed work across different universities to see where UoE could improve its efforts to decolonise, and to see how institutions can work with open knowledge to further decolonisation, with this research informing the Wikimedian in Residence website.

Website and Wikidata work[edit]

Drafted 6 new highly-researched website pages for the Wikimedian in Residence website under different equality, diversity and inclusion themes.
Made 1350 uploads to Wikidata, including creating entries for 26 housing developments and 54 individual Towerblocks in Aberdeen, and researching other online databases to source information for their Wikidata entries. See an example here: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107445423
Collaborating with Erin Boyle, Wikisourcerer intern at UoE, to create Wikidata entries for a collection of 1920s photographs from around Leith to later be linked with Wikimedia Commons photos of the original images.
Met with Professor Mikki Brock and Dr. Chris Langley to discuss the Mapping the Scottish Reformation project (http://mappingthescottishreformation.org/), in preparation for producing a short video to showcase the exciting potential that Wikidata projects have.
Met with Dr. Zsuzsanna Varga, researcher at UoE, to begin work on uploading around 800 pieces of literature to Wikidata to ultimately map their publication locations.
Edited 4 existing Wikidata related pages on the Wikimedian in Residence website to improve clarity and emphasise the message of the benefits of linked open data
Drafted 7 new website pages to showcase the power of linked open data, including highlighting previous Wikidata projects and potential other uses of Wikidata.

Wikimedia in the Curriculum[edit]

Liaised with Professor Norah Spears that the Reproductive Biomedicine BSc Wikipedia assignment will continue for its 6th year in September 2021 and will be spread over three weeks with the hope of in-person working.
Confirmed with Michael Gallagher that a Wikipedia component will take place on the Digital Education MSc in January 2022.
Three to four new case studies to add to the Wikimedia in Education - Booklet of Case Studies for a new digital edition to be relaunched in 2022.
The Translation Studies MSc Wikipedia assignment concluded on 14th May 2021 with students peer assessing each other's newly published translations. This semester students have been invited to consider how best to support global understanding of black and postcolonial history through their 1,500-2,000 word translation assignment. This assignment is being reviewed for Semester One in session 2021/2022 and offered on an 'opt-in' basis.

Podcast on Wikimedia in education[edit]

A podcast series recorded on the 24th of May for the University's influential Teaching Matters blog is being edited by a student intern this Summer. Topics discussed included: Wikipedia and History (1hr); Wikipedia and academia in the new normal(1hr); Wikipedia in 321 languages(1hr); Wikipedia, Medicine and Science Communication(30 mins); Wikipedia and the Gender Gap(30 mins). Professor Diana Paton, Translation Studies students, History Society students, Jason Evans, Lorna Campbell, Lucy Crompton-Reid, Prof Norah Spears, and Prof Linda Bauld all contributed.

Conferences[edit]

Delivered two sessions at the LILAC Information Literacy online conference in July 2021, FestivIL of LILAC - one was a lightning talk on The Map of Scotland's Accused Witches Wikidata project and one was a 1hr masterclass workshop on Wikipedia as a learning and teaching environment. Neither talk was recorded but slides for the masterclass are here.
Had weak acceptance of abstract on Wikipedia in Translation based on the work conducted on the Translation Studies MSc for the December 2021 conference, Understanding Wikipedia’s Dark Matter: Translation and Multilingual Practice in the World’s Largest Online Encyclopedia. Need to revise and resubmit by end of August 2021.

Wikipedia at the University of Edinburgh[edit]

Student interns, Clea Strathmann and Erin Boyle, will create a 3-5 minute video bh the end of their internships (27th August) introducing the 'how and why' of engaging with Wikipedia at the university (can we cite it? No. Can we write it? Yes.) for wide dissemination on student and course programme Facebook groups when they are settled in and thinking of starting their first assignments.

Research data and Wikidata[edit]

Student intern Clea Strathmann has completed the importing of the Tower Block Archive project (images of Scottish social housing to Wikimedia Commons and associated rich metadata to Wikidata) data for Aberdeen's social housing. Clea will be documenting the process used so that all of Scotland's social housing can be completed and this documentation will be added to our Wikidata pages on the University of Edinburgh website.
Clea met with Dr. Zsusanna Vargas to discuss the dataset she wishes to have added to Wikidata in order to visualise the 700-900 books in the dataset and their place of publication. Zsusanna reached out to the resident on the basis of the Map of Accused Witches data project and wishes to do something similar. This should make for an interesting project for Open data and Knowledge Equity intern, Clea Strathmann.

Wikipedia Editing - a new Edinburgh Award[edit]

The resident has submitted a new Edinburgh Award to accredit students for extended project work on Wikipedia as of October 2021 to March 2022. This would allow students to develop important information literacy, digital research, communication and collaborative skills ahead of the world of work and accredit them for undertaking 70-80 hours of Wikipedia work over an extended period. The first iteration is aimed to begin in October 2021 and has been negotiated in collaboration with Kirsty Stewart and Gavin McCabe at the University of Edinburgh Career Service and in collaboration with student interns, Erin Boyle and Clea Strathmann.
