Progress[edit]

The Wikidata Map of Accused Witches project - new intern to be recruited to quality assure the data[edit]

  • The resident met with his line manager, Karen Howie, this month to identify areas of improvement to be made the Wikidata Map of Accused Witches in Scotland following a flurry of activity from our student interns earlier this Summer. Ten areas have been targeted for improvement with the custom timeline interface and site title identified as the most pressing. The developer, Richard Lawson, has been asked to make improvements in line with our suggestions but we are considering recruiting a student intern to work part-time (January to end of May 0.2FTE) to support us in terms of quality assuring the data and making sure the data and visualisations are consistent and working as expected. Interviews are to take place 30th January 2023 once the 45 applicants are shortlisted.
New article created for Mary Caroline Hughes (1862–1916), an English geologist, artist and photographer. She acted as a chaperone to Cambridge University undergraduate female students enabling them to go on geology field trips for the first time.

Women in Red workshops[edit]

One new Women in Red workshop was held on Thursday 15th December 2022 - our 68th monthly workshop at the university came with tea, coffee and mince pies!

  • 5 new articles were created at the 15 December 2022 event inc. a new article on Jane Hannay 1868 – 4 April 1938) who was a women's welfare, employment activist and teacher from New Abbey, Dumfries. Also created was Mary Caroline Hughes (née Weston; 4 July 1862 – 9 July 1916), an English geologist, artist and photographer. She acted as a chaperone to Cambridge University undergraduate female students enabling them to go on geology field trips for the first time. She also accompanied her husband Thomas McKenny Hughes to several International Geological Congress meetings.

Strategic Aim 2 - Information Literacy[edit]

Work with partners to develop digital, data and information literacy through Wikimedia

  • Advocate for the inclusion of Wikimedia in curriculum, syllabus and course development

Wikimedia in the Curriculum - current work[edit]

  • Five new case studies can now be added to the Wikimedia in Education - Booklet of Case Studies. Dr. Glaire Anderson, History of Art, and Evelyn Balsells PhD, Global Health Challenges Pg Online, have signed off on their case studies and images to be used. Graphic designer, Nicky Greenhorn, has submitted a new proof design for the new case studies as of 21 September 2022 and this will now be reviewed by Dr. Sara Thomas, Wikimedia UK, and myself to see if any further changes are required. NB: Will be returning to this in January 2023.
  • The Translation Studies MSc Wikipedia assignment for Semester One began on 12 October 2022 with 63 students in the cohort this year. The students have all chose their articles as of 7 November 2022 and been taught best practice about how to translate their article. The assignment will conclude 13 January 2023 following peer reviewing translations by 6th January 2023.
  • The Global Health Challenges Pg Online 1,500 word assignment began its 4th iteration on Monday 10th October 2022. 21,000 words have been added to Wikipedia stub articles about natural and manmade disasters so far. A 30 minute video webinar on a recent case study of Wikipedia in the Curriculum on the Global Health Challenges Pg Online course programme at the University of Edinburgh was delivered on 15 June 2022 for the University's Learning and Teaching Conference 2022. This has now been published on the University's Media Hopper channel. This assignment concluded in November 2022 with the resident providing feedback on each group's efforts using a rubric.
  • The Digital Education MSc component on Wikipedia and Knowledge Equity is to go ahead in February 2023 as a 2 week block inc. training webinar, short activities, assigned reading and discussion forums.
  • The Data Fair 2022 on the Design Informatics MA/MFA went ahead on Thursday 29th September 2022 where the Masters students work in groups of 3 and have 7 weeks to work practically with real-world datasets to generate creative visualisations to showcase by the end of their assignment. The residency pitched two data proposals: Witchcraft data and Wiki Loves Monuments data. Two groups decided to work with Wiki Loves Monuments data and images over the 7 week assignment. The students used data from Wikidata and information from Wikipedia and Wiki Loves Monuments images on Wikimedia Commons to design an educational website and booklet about Gothic Revival architecture in the United Kingdom. Conferences[edit]

  • The resident presented a 1hr session on Open Science and the University of Edinburgh during Open Access week on 27 October 2022. This event was hosted by Rute Correia, Wikimedian in Residence at NOVA FCSH, a social and human sciences faculty at the University of Lisbon. This is a partnership with Wikimedia Portugal. The presentation was recorded and shared to Wikimedia Portugal's YouTube channel.
  • The resident will be attending the 2023 Classical Association conference at the University of Cambridge on 21-23 April 2023 to take part in an international roundtable on Teaching with Wikipedia.
  • The resident has been submitted as co-author/presenter with Lorna Campbell, OER Service, on a University of Edinburgh abstract on Open Education in the Curriculum to the Open Education Resources Conference (OER23),taking place in Inverness on 4-6 April 2023.
  • The resident has submitted an abstract to speak at the Digital Universities UK conference at the University of Leeds on 17-20 April 2023.

Wikipedia Editing - Edinburgh Award activity to begin on 19th October for year two[edit]

  • The second iteration of the Digital Volunteering with Wikipedia - a new Edinburgh Award to accredit students for extended project work on Wikipedia began with a new cohort on 19th October 2022. 44 students registered initially with 22 submitting their 400 word action plans by the Award's first deadline - Friday 28th October 2022. Their project pages are now added to our main page for the Edinburgh Award with the Input 2 session attended by 19 students on 7th December 2022. The students have until 6 January (midnight) to submit their 400 word reflections on their 3 chosen skills and impact achieved so far along with their fortnightly log of activities undertaken. The students published edits thus far can be found here.

  • Presented on Open Science at the University of Edinburgh for Wikimedia Portugal on 27 October 2022 and collaborated with colleagues in our Scholarship Communications Team, our OER Service and the grassroots Edinburgh Open Research Initiative (EORI) to research the gamut of open research and open science work taking place at the University of Edinburgh.
  • Discussed with my line manager, Karen Howie, about submitting conference abstracts to LILAC, OER23 and the Times Higher Education's Digital Universities conferences.
  • Invited by Lianna Davis of the Wikipedia and Education User Group to deliver a presentation on Teaching Wikidata at the University of Edinburgh on November 3rd.
  • Was awarded Support Specialist of the Year for 2022 by Open Education Global on 20th October 2022. More details here.

  • Next phase of the Mapping the Scottish Reformation Wikidata project with Dr. Chris Langley (formerly of Newman University, Birmingham and now at the Open University) and Professor Mikki Brock (Washington and Lee University, USA) - to be confirmed.
  • Translation Studies MSc Wikipedia assignment - new 2,500 Wikipedia assignment has begun as of 12 October 2022 and will conclude on Friday 13th January 2023.
  • Digital Education MSc Wikipedia component to begin 2 week block in February 2023.
  • Second iteration of a new 50-80hr Edinburgh Award for Digital Volunteering with Wikipedia began on 19 October 2022 and will conclude on 31st March 2023.
  • Updating the Booklet of Case Studies of Wikimedia in UK Education to relaunch a new digital edition. Graphic designer Nicky Greenhorn has submitted a proof as of 13th July 2022 and this will be reviewed by Dr. Sara Thomas and myself asap with a view to publishing online and hopefully finalised by end of December 2022.
  • Student Experience Grant (SEG) - a report and blog article are to be written on the achievements and impact of the 14 week student project on improving LGBTQ+ History, Black History and Gender History to be completed by 31st January 2023.
  • The Map of Accused Witches site. The site just needs developer time to implement the new data visualisations and reorientate the dropdown menus.
  • New Scottish Witchhunter student internship to be recruited at end of January 2023 to work 0.2FTE from February to end of May 2023 to help quality assure the witchcraft data in Wikidata so that we can launch updates to the website later this year.
