Summary of main points this month[edit]
- Following the successful work of ‘Witchfinder General’ Data Visualisation intern, Ruby Imrie, the new version of the Map of Accused Witches Scotland website launched. This includes new information and features inc. accusations of shapeshifting and ritual objects plotted on a filterable map, custom timeline searches, a Histropedia timeline enabling name searches and filtering by age of accused and a new historic map layer. Ruby will continue 1 day a week from 14 Sept until May 2024 to complete.
- E. McAndrew has discussed collaborations with Mapping the Scottish Reformation project, Curious Edinburgh, Translation Studies MSc, the Shared Histories project with the EFI, Their Finest Hour WW2 project and more this month as well as programmed in a new series of Digital Skills workshops for Sem 1.

Strategic Aim 1 - Knowledge Equity[edit]

Update on the Wikidata Map of Accused Witches project - our student intern finished 12 weeks' work on 25 August 2023[edit]
- Ruby Imrie's full-time internship came to an end of 25 August 2023 so she has been extended to continue work on a 0.2 FTE basis from w/c 11 September 2023 until May 2024 to continue to (1) quality assure the witchcraft data in Wikidata (2) improve the site design and UX experience and (3) build new features e.g. an AI chat interface if possible and a map of memorials.
- Ruby has been using R to compare Wikidata with the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft to quality assure the witchcraft data. Checked datasets are marked with a
on the Wikidata project page. - E.McAndrew and R. Imrie met with Professor Julian Goodare, Project Director of the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft, on 23 August 2023 in the University of Edinburgh's Main Library for three hours to outline the UX user testing feedback about the Map of Accused Witches in Scotland website and update him on the main outcomes, bug fixes and new features on the website achieved during Ruby's 12 week internship and discussed our plans for the next phase of development and data quality assurance when Ruby returns on 14 September 2023 for 1 day a week until May 2024.
- One new Wikipedia page was created this month by E.McAndrew: Marioun Twedy or Marion Tweedy was accused of witchcraft in Peebles in the Scottish Borders in 1649. She was accused of causing the death of a woman and her child and of using charms to cure animals. She refused to confess to these accusations. However, the witchpricker condemned her for finding 'the devil's mark' on her. Marion's story was dramatised in the play, Prick, performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2023 and its final performance was watched by E.McAndrew and R. Imrie on the Witchfinder General: Data Visualisation intern's final day in post. Her final day blog can be read here and her 6 min video summary can be watched here.
Ada Lovelace Day – celebrating Women in STEM[edit]
- E.McAndrew is involved in a working group and planning discussions to run a Wikipedia editing event for Ada Lovelace Day (10 October 2023) and has reached out to former student intern, Maggie Lin, to present a lightning talk on the day as well as STEM student societies. Plans are progressing with a number of guest speakers and a Wikipedia 'Women in STEM' editathon planned for 2-5pm in Room 1.07 in the University's Main Library.

Women in Red workshops[edit]
Owing to the lack of room availability during the Edinburgh Festival and increased competition for Library rooms following the flood in Argyle House, it was decided to cancel the August monthly meetup of "Women in Red" in favour of supporting the Wikidata intern's last day on 25 August 2023 and postponing Women in Red's next meetup until Friday 29th September 2023 1-5pm in Room 1.08 Main Library.

Partnership interactions[edit]
- Next phase of the Mapping the Scottish Reformation Wikidata project with Dr. Chris Langley (formerly of Newman University, Birmingham and now at the Open University) and Professor Mikki Brock (Washington and Lee University, USA) Update for 14 September 2023: Chris and Mikki are preparing an AHRC research proposal and want the University of Edinburgh to be a key part of developing the Mapping the Scottish Reformation project and taking it to the next version 2.0 stage. Discussions underway about the capacity for our web developers to be involved or not but current indications are that Karen Howie and Stewart Cromar ar supportive of continuing work on this project given our past involvement and that this is seen as Project B following the Wikidata Map of Accused Witches in Scotland being Project A.
- Met with Rupal Karia at Wikimedia UK on 14 August 2023 to discuss ways of encouraging BAME communities to get more involved in Wikipedia editing.
- Curious Edinburgh – new witch tour of Edinburgh: E. McAndrew and student intern R. Imrie met with Curious Edinburgh’s Niki Vermeulen on 24 August 2023 to discuss how a Scottish witchcraft tour of Edinburgh could be added as a new walking tour on the Curious Edinburgh website and mobile app. E. McAndrew agreed to discuss with Professor Julian Goodare about 15-18 historic points of interest in Edinburgh where 100-200 words could be added and a coherent and educational narrative be shaped.
- Their Finest Hour - WW2 archival collection days: Rainy Hall, New College has been identified as the venue for the community collection day at the University of Edinburgh, which will take place on 25 November. There has been a delay finalising the hall booking. Advertising will not begin until the booking is confirmed. E. Swimer has contacted local history societies to introduce the project, created a project blog (https://blogs.ed.ac.uk/theirfinesthour/), started drafting project comms inc. press releases and volunteer recruitment e-mails. L. Campbell liaised with G. Fortescue regarding equipment and met with Oxford University project manager Matthew Kidd.
- E. McAndrew met and discussed with L. Campbell on 13 August 2023 any areas of convergence/possible areas of collaboration with the Wikimedia projects and looking at the Lest we Forget WW1 collection as a starting point.
- Sharing Histories project: The University of Edinburgh's Patricia Erskine hosted a brainstorming discussion on 23 August 2023 to see how various stakeholders at the University could engage with the Sharing Histories project to document and explore the history and images of the historic donors’ board in the old Royal Infirmary building (now the Edinburgh Futures Institute and the new home of the Edinburgh Book festival too) given that many of the donors grew rich as a result of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. E. McAndrew attended and discussed how the Wikimedia projects could help document the images on Wikimedia Commons, the history on Wikipedia and organise/structure manchine readable data about the history of the donors as linked open data in Wikidata.

Strategic Aim 2 - Information Literacy[edit]
Work with partners to develop digital, data and information literacy through Wikimedia

Wikimedia in the Curriculum - current work[edit]
- Six new case studies can now be added to the Wikimedia in Education - Booklet of Case Studies. Graphic designer, Nicky Greenhorn, has submitted a new proof design has been provided with amendments.update 14 September - Proof design from Nicky Greenhorn has been reviewed by E. McAndrew and sent back for further changes to be made. Nicky will provide a final proof in the weeks to come.
- The Reproductive Biology BSc Wikipedia assignment will not go ahead in academic year 2023/2024 according to course organiser Dr. Agnes Stefansdottir, owing to a packed course schedule. They will revisit this decision again for 2024/2025 as the course organisers are very positive about working with the residency and the learning outcomes being delivered. This particular assignment has been running every year for the last seven years so it is felt this makes a good time to review the last seven years and write up an article about the past work.
- Translation Studies MSc Wikipedia assignment to commence on 27 September 2023 with 70 Masters students being trained how to contribute 2,000-2,500 word translations of high quality Wikipedia articles to another language Wikipedia by mid January 2024. update 14 September - Met the students on 13 September 2023 at the class induction meeting with all class lecturers and portfolio language tutors in attendance. - Youngmi Kim on the Korean Studies MSc has requested E. McAndrew to run his annual Wikipedia training workshop (1.5-2hrs) to get interested Masters students thinking about how to improve representation of Korean history and culture on Wikipedia.
- E.McAndrew has submitted two Wikidata 'data challenges' to the Design Informatics MA/MFA's annual 'Data Fair' in October 2023 where Masters students work in groups of 3 to analyse a dataset and come up with new creative visusalisations over the 6-7 weeks between October and December.
- Renewing collaborations with History of Art's Dr. Glaire Anderson and initiating new collaboration with Professor Charles West, Online History MSc, are both under discussion.
- Digital Education MSc will likely have a Wikipedia and Knowledge Equity 2 week component again in February 2024.
Conferences[edit]
- No new conference news this month. Considering submitting proposal for WikidataCon and Wikimania in 2024 on the Map of Accused Witches in Scotland project and 3 years of the Edinburgh Award.
- A paper has been published about Wikipedia in Classics Education following E.McAndrew and others presenting at the 2023 Classics Association conference in April 2023 at the University of Cambridge.
Wikipedia Editing - Edinburgh Award year review[edit]
- Dates are set for the new 2023/2024 Edinburgh Award for Digital Volunteering with Wikipedia and new sessions to help guide the students in place for a) learning how to edit b) settling on an agreed project plan of attack and c) mutually agreeing final project targets. - The first workshop will take place on 18th October 2023 in Room 1.07 Main Library with 5-8 students interested already.
New Student Internships[edit]
- Ruby Imrie has concluded her Summer internship (12 weeks 1.0 FTE) on the Map of Accused Witches Wikidata project as our third Summer Witchfinder General: Data Visualisation intern. Start date of 5 June 2023 and finish date 25 August 2023. This has now received a 0.2FTE extension during term time to start 14 September 2023 until May 2024.
- Interviewing a p/t role of Assistant Wikimedian in Residence to support the work of the residency in the longer term (events management and promotion, community building for Women in Red and Edinburgh Award, outreach to different geographically distant parts of the university and more) on a 1 year 0.2-0.4FTE basis. This role has been re-advertised as of 13 September 2023 and will close 4 October 2023.

- Classical Association Conference 2023: A report on the University of Cambridge roundtable discussion at the Classical Association Conference (April 2023) has been written and has been published by the Bulletin of the Council of University Classics Departments (Bulletin - Council of University Classical Departments (sas.ac.uk)
- E. McAndrew and student R. Imrie attend the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to see the new play about Scotland's persecution of accused witches, Prick, on 25 August 2023. The playwright used the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database as her source material and was very happy to be told of the new developments to the Map of Accused Witches in Scotland website especially the Histropedia timeline search.
- R. Imrie also attend an Edinburgh Book Festival event this month about Scotland's witches and came away motivated to create a Map of Memorials as a priority new feature to be included on the next iteration of the site.

The Wikimedian in Residence received enquiries from the OER Service, Wikimedia UK on how to crowdsource more engagement from Black and Asian communities and a Royal Society event with the BBC on Scientific Misinformation, Shared Histories EFI Institute project, Curious Edinburgh, Mapping the Scottish Reformation project, Lizzy Moran with a query on the Map of Accused Witches project, Professor Andrew Millar on a BioClocks UK Wikipedia event, several students enquiring about the Edinburgh Award for 2022/2023 and several enquiries from academic colleagues about how to improve their Wikipedia page in the right way to avoid Conflict of Interest.

- E.McAndrew has extended Ruby Imrie for new 0.2FTE (1 day a week) Witchfinder general Wikidata data visualisation position commencing w/c 11 Sept 2023.
- E.McAndrew readvertising for an Assistant Wikimedian in Residence position to be recruited on a 0.2-0.4FTE basis for 1 year. Advert went live on 13 September 2023 and will close on 4 October 2023.
- Professor Charles West, formerly of University of Sheffield, is joining the University of Edinburgh in July 2023 and has been discussing a student assignment for the Online History MSc with the Wikimedian in Residence for Semester 1 (session 2023/2024).
- Hemangini Gupta, Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Politics and International Relations has requested holding an editing event in December 2023 with Gender.Ed's European partners at freie Uni, Berlin who organize a #4GenderStudies event on Dec 18 every year to promote Gender Studies in the Academy. The idea is to edit pages about feminist authors on the web and/or pages related to gender studies.
- Dr. Terri Ochiagha, Lecturer in Global Anglophone Literatures, wants to apply for research grant for January to December impact project where University of Edinburgh students improve topic coverage of author Chinua Achebe and his works on Wikipedia over several sessions.
- The OER Service is supporting the University of Oxford's Their Finest Hour project to digitise and collect the testimonies and digitally capture WW2 artefacts for a WW2 archive following the success of the WW1 Lest we forget project. E. McAndrew has discussed about being involved and seeing if some stories and images can be shared to Wikimedia though the project's Non-Commerical Creative Commons licence looks a barrier in some respects.
