Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/BSL lives

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Description[edit]

The ‘BSL Lives’ project aims to increase the number of Wikipedia entries for members of the British Sign Language community who are in the public eye, as well as updating the existing ones.

Deaf people are under-represented on Wikipedia, which means the skills, gifts and talents of deaf people remain unknown and unrecognised by most of those outside the deaf community. We are bringing together information to set up new profiles for BSL users in the public eye.

We need to have good balance of ages, genders, sexualities and ethnicities, and from as many different fields as possible - sportspeople, actors, campaigners, entrepreneurs, scientists, influencers, researchers, and so on.

We do appreciate the scope is confined and limited, but as a minority group, Deaf people are unfairly underrepresented on Wikipedia.[1]

Why do you want to start a new group, instead of joining one of these existing groups?
This group is specific about British Deaf people and although it would benefit from the support of the wider group, it needs more local focus and attention.

Also, specify whether or not you would join the project.
