U.S. Route 33 in Michigan (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) review

Suggestion: Promote to A-Class
Nominator's comments: Short and sweet, shouldn't be a hard article to review. It's another one of the former US Highways in Michigan, and one of the stranger ones in that most of the time it overlaid another highway. Going forward, I'd like to start bringing the rest of Michigan's US Highway article up to A-Class over time.

Comments by Dough4872:

  1. The map in the infobox appears to show US 33 at its greatest extent while the infobox shows the last termini of US 33. Maybe clarify in the map caption that it shows US 33 at its greatest extent (I noticed the map has different colors for the greatest extent and the last alignment).
  2. When US 33 was first designated in Michigan, where in St. Joseph did it end? This should be mentioned.
  3. When the route was extended in 1960, where in Lake Michigan Beach did it end?
  4. The article could use some images. I would suggest either adding a picture showing the former alignment of US 33 in Michigan or an old map scan showing US 33 in Michigan.

Overall great short article, just a few nitpicks. Dough4872 00:16, 19 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Dough4872: I've been looking for photos to add, and I'll crop one of the old MSHD maps here in a moment, but the prose tweaks have been applied. Imzadi 1979  03:47, 19 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Rschen7754: none that are freely licensed at the moment. Of course, I keep looking to change that. Imzadi 1979  05:11, 9 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Imzadi1979: What about File:M-139, Benton Harbor, Nov 2012.jpg or File:M-63 at I-196-A2.jpg? Were those on the previous route? --Rschen7754 01:07, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Lead: I'd try to move up the mention of decommissioning. I was initially confused. How about changing the lead sentence to "US Highway 33 (US 33) is a part of the United States Numbered Highway System that prior to truncation in 1997 reached Berrien County, Michigan."? That would also allow the deletion of the last sentence in the lead.

History:Clearly the name "Blue and Gray Trail" is a reference to the civil war. Yet neither this article, nor the national US 33 article covers the connection. Did any of the sources hint how this name came to be? I think if you could flesh that out, it would be a great addition to the article, especially making it more interesting to "non road geeks".

Footnote: Is this note necessary? It is already explained in the lead of the MDOT article if anybody was confused by it.

Other than that, a nice clean read, well done. Dave (talk) 18:29, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Lead
  1. The lead seems out of order. I'd start with its designation in 1938.
  2. I'd mention where in Indiana the highway was truncated back to. It just seems like the state line is a cliff.
RD
  1. Does the RD need to start with "At the time it last existed in Michigan, ..."?
  2. I would remove the NHS sentence. It doesn't add anything unless we can say how it's important.
History
  1. When US 33 is designated, I would mention where the national endpoints were. It reads like it just appeared in Michigan.
  2. I'd also make it clearer that it overlapped US 31.
  3. Why was US 33 truncated in 1986?
Jct list
  1. What do you think of adding junctions up to Lake Michigan Beach?

Other than that it's another fine Michigan article. –Fredddie 19:52, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
