Augusta Belt Railway

Location and General Description of Property

The railroad of Augusta Belt Railway Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, operating exclusively as a switching road in the city of Augusta, Ga. The owned mileage extends from a connection with the Georgia Railroad (Lessee Organization) at Harrisonville, in the city of Augusta, thence southeasterly through the city to a connection with the Charleston & Western Carolina Railway Company immediately southwest of the city limits, a distance of 3.687 miles . The carrier also owns yard and side tracks totaling 6.062 miles. Its road thus embraces 9.749 miles of all tracks owned. In Appendix 1 will be found a general description of the property of the carrier.

Corporate History

The carrier was incorporated April 8, 1896, under the general railroad law of the State of Georgia, to construct a railroad extending from a connection with the Georgia Railroad (Lessee Organization) at Harrisonville, in the city of Augusta, thence southeasterly through the city to a connection with Charleston & Western Carolina Railway Company immediately southwest of the city limits. Organization was perfected April 11, 1896. The principal office of the carrier is located in Augusta. The detailed facts as to the development of the fixed physical property are given in Appendix 2.

Development of Fixed Physical Property

The property of the carrier was constructed by the forces of the Georgia Railroad (Lessee Organization) for account of the carrier. The construction work was begun in April, 1896, and the entire property placed in operation in October, 1896.

Property of other carriers used jointly with the carrier

The carrier uses 0.71 mile of yard tracks of Augusta Southern Railroad Company, for which it pays the following: For cars loaded with freight, on which a switching charge is paid by shipper or receiver, $1 per car; for cars loaded with freight, on which switching charge is absorbed by connecting lines, $2 per car.

The carrier uses 0.05 mile of main line of the Georgia Railroad (Lessee Organization), for which it pays no rent, and 0.14 mile of wye track of that company, for which it pays an annual rental of $180.

The carrier uses 0.57 mile of sidetrack of Charleston & Western Carolina Railway Company, and 1.37 miles of industrial tracks, for which it pays no rental.

Property of the carrier used jointly with another carrier

The Georgia Railroad (Lessee Organization) uses 3.69 miles of main-line track of the carrier, for which it pays an annual rental of 5 per cent upon the value of tracks, $44,680, and a portion of maintenance and taxes, divided upon a user basis.

For year ending on date of valuation the rental amounted to $2,483.90, the proportion of maintenance paid by the Georgia Railroad (Lessee Organization) amounting to $1,975.23. The Georgia Railroad (Lessee Organization) uses 0.14 mile of wye track of the carrier, for which it pays an annual rental of $180, and maintains the track.
