Bridgton and Saco River Railroad[edit]

Location and General Description of Property[edit]

The railroad of Bridgton and Saco River Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track narrow-gauge (2 feet) steam railroad, located in the southwestern part of Maine. The owned mileage extends northwardly from Bridgton Junction, Me., to Harrison, Me., a distance of 21.171 miles. The carrier also owns yard and side tracks totaling 3.322 miles. Its road thus embraces 24.493 miles of all tracks owned. In Appendix 1 will be found a general description of the property of the carrier.

Corporate History[edit]

The carrier was incorporated on July 19 and organized on July 30, 1881, under the general laws of the State of Maine. Its principal office is located at Portland, Me. The detailed facts as to the development of the fixed physical property are given in Appendix 2.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]

The property owned by the carrier on date of valuation was constructed under contract in two sections, as follows:

Miles
Bridgton Junction to Bridgton, between December 1, 1881, and January 1, 1883, when operation was begun. 15.946
Extension from Bridgton to Harrison, between December, 1896, and August 19, 1898, when the through line was opened for operation. 5.225
Total. 21.171

The principal contractors of the first section were Fessendens and Youngs, and Michael O'Neil, and the extension was built by R. D. Shanahan. None of the contractors, with the exception of Youngs, as director, appears to have been affiliated with the carrier.
