The railroad of The Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located in central West Virginia. The main line extends from Dundon to Widen, a distance of 18.515 miles. The carrier also owns 2.989 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 21.504 miles of all tracks owned and used. The carrier is an industrial railroad, serving principally the coal mines of the Elk River Coal and Lumber Company, which controls the railroad.

CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated April 7, 1904, under the laws of the State of West Virginia, for the purpose of constructing, maintaining, and operating a railroad from Dundon to Widen, W. Va.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

Of the 18.515 miles of road owned by the carrier, it had acquired about 2 miles from the C. L. Ritter Lumber Company and 16.515 miles by construction. The years when the various portions of the line were constructed and the manner in which the carrier acquired the property are indicated in the following table:

The carrier purchased from the C. L. Ritter Lumber Company in October, 1904, the line from Dundon to Avoca, and reconstructed same, and in April, 1906, the extension from Avoca to Cressmont was constructed by the Elk River Coal and Lumber Company under contract for the carrier. In 1911 the carrier completed the line from Cressmont to Widen with its own forces.
