Burro Mountain Railroad[edit]

Location and General Description of Property[edit]

The railroad of the Burro Mountain Railroad Company, hereinafter called the Burro Mountain Railroad, which is leased to and operated by the El Paso & Southwestern Railroad, is a single-track line located in New Mexico and extending from Burro Mountain Junction to Tyrone, a distance of 13.088 miles.

Introductory[edit]

The Burro Mountain Railroad is a corporation of New Mexico, having its corporate office at Leopold, N. Mex., and its general offices at El Paso, Tex., and New York, N. Y. No accounting records of the Burro Mountain Railroad were obtained for the period prior to June 17, 1913. Therefore, the information given in this report regarding its financial dealings, corporate operations, and investments are as stated in the accounts opened on that date.

The Burro Mountain Railroad is controlled by the El Paso and Southwestern Company through ownership of capital stock. The records reviewed do not indicate that this company controls any common-carrier corporation.

The property was operated under lease by the El Paso and Southwestern Company from February 1, 1914, to June 30, 1914, and from that date to date of valuation by the El Paso & Southwestern Railroad.

Corporate History[edit]

The Burro Mountain Railroad was incorporated April 13, 1909, under the laws of the Territory of New Mexico, for the purpose of constructing a railroad in Grant County, N. Mex. Its organization was completed on the same day.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]

The owned mileage, extending from Tyrone to Burro Mountain Junction, N. Mex., 13.088 miles, was constructed in part by the company prior to September 1912 and was completed by the El Paso and Southwestern Company for the Burro Mountain Railroad during the period from June 1913 to February 1914.

Leased Railway Property[edit]

The entire railway property of the Burro Mountain Railroad was leased for sole operation to the El Paso and Southwestern Company under agreement dated January 1, 1914, effective until February 1, 1914, when its property was opened for operation. The agreement was assigned to the El Paso & Southwestern Railroad under a contract dated March 27, 1915, effective July 1, 1914. The annual rental was named at 5 percent on the recorded investment in road. The rental received for the year ended June 30, 1917, was $22,095.57.
