Introductory[edit]

The Cairo and Thebes is a corporation of Illinois, having its principal office at Cairo, Ill., and is controlled by the Missouri Pacific through ownership of its capital stock. The records do not indicate that this company controls any common-carrier corporation. The property was operated by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway Company and its successor, the Missouri Pacific, from August, 1910, the date of its completion, to December 31, 1917. Since that date it has been operated by the United States Railroad Administration as a part of the Missouri Pacific.

Corporate History[edit]

The Cairo and Thebes was incorporated September 28, 1905, under general laws of Illinois, for the purpose of constructing and operating a railroad from a point at or near Cairo, Ill., thence northwesterly, to a point at or near Thebes, Ill. The date of organization was not determined.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]

The owned road, 24.314 miles, was acquired by construction, with its own forces. It was completed in August, 1910.

Leased Railway Property[edit]

The entire property of the Cairo and Thebes is leased to the Missouri Pacific for a period of 99 years from August 4, 1910. The terms of the lease and the rental accrued for the seven months ended December 31, 1917, are given in the report on the Missouri Pacific.
