The railroad of California Western Railroad & Navigation Company, herein called the carrier, is a single-track, standard-gauge, steam railroad, located in the northwestern part of California. The owned main line mileage extends in a westerly direction from Willits to Fort Bragg, with a branch extending from Glen Blair Junction to Glen Blair. The carrier owns and uses 47.444 miles of tracks, of which 42.660 miles are first main track and 4.784 miles yard tracks and sidings.


CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated June 30, 1905, for a period of 50 years under the general laws of California. The purpose for which it was incorporated was to own, maintain, and operate a steam railroad and appurtenances in the county of Mendocino, Calif., to own, control, and operate wharves, booms, piers, and chutes; to own, control, and operate steamboats, ships, and vessels and other craft propelled by steam or otherwise, and navigate the waters of the rivers, streams, bays, and oceans with said vessels, and carry on the business of a common carrier.

The proposed route of said railroad follows: Commencing at tidewater, on the shore of the Pacific Ocean at Fort Bragg and running thence in an easterly direction over and along the route of the railroad then operated by the Union Lumber Company to Alpine, an estimated length of 41 miles, with intermediate branches from said main line running in a northerly direction to the towns of Glen Blair and Sherwood, about 23 miles, also a branch running southerly from Fort Bragg for a distance of 1 mile. The date of organization was July 1, 1905.

In the construction of the railroad the grading on 13.3 miles was done under contract by independent contractors, the remainder being done by the forces of the carrier.
