Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio Railway of South Carolina[edit]

Location and General Description of Property[edit]

The railroad of Carolina, Clinchfield and Ohio Railway of South Carolina, herein called the Clinchfield of South Carolina, is a single-track, standard-gage, steam railroad, located in the northwestern part of South Carolina. The main line extends in a northerly direction from Spartanburg, S. C, to the boundary line between the States of South Carolina and North Carolina, where it connects with the railroad of the Clinchfield. The two railroads thus form a part of a through route between territory adjacent to the Great Lakes and the south Atlantic seaboard. The Clinchfield of South Carolina owns and uses 18.087 miles of main track and 6.600 miles of yard tracks and sidings, a total of 24.687 miles of all tracks.

Introductory[edit]

The Clinchfield of South Carolina is a corporation of South Carolina, with its principal office at Spartanburg, S. C. The Clinchfield of South Carolina is controlled by the Clinchfield in the following manner: 114 of the 120 shares of capital stock outstanding are held in the name of Earnest A. Smith of the firm of Blair & Company of New York, in trust for the Clinchfield.

Corporate History[edit]

The Clinchfield of South Carolina was incorporated as the South and Western Railroad Company by articles of incorporation that were filed April 18, 1908, in the office of the secretary of state of South Carolina. The name was changed to the present designation by an appropriate amendment dated December 4, 1909. Organization of the Clinchfield of South Carolina was perfected April 18, 1908. The purpose of incorporation was to provide a direct connection between the tracks of the Clinchfield and those of the Southern Railway Company and the Charleston & Western Carolina Railway Company, and to form a part of a through route between territory adjacent to the Great Lakes and the South Atlantic seaboard.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]

The Clinchfield of South Carolina acquired its 18.087 miles of road by construction under contract with the Norlina Construction Company. Construction of the road was begun about September 24, 1908, and the entire line was completed and placed in operation on December 11, 1909.

Leased Railway Property[edit]

The Clinchfield of South Carolina uses jointly with the Southern Railway Company the latter's terminal facilities at Spartanburg, S. C, for which it pays a proportion of the operating expenses. For the year ended on date of valuation the Clinchfield of South Carolina paid $456. In addition, the Clinchfield of South Carolina uses jointly with the Charleston & Western Carolina Railway Company, the latter's terminal facilities at Spartanburg, S. C, for which it pays a proportion of the operating expenses. For the year ended on date of valuation, the rental paid for this facility was $1,804.68.

The Clinchfield of South Carolina used in the conduct of its operations equipment owned by the Clinchfield. The obtainable records do not indicate that any equipment is regularly assigned for use by the Clinchfield of South Carolina but that it is furnished as needed and the rental assessed on the per diem and mileage basis, which, together with the usual charges for equipment interchanged, is accounted for through the hire of equipment account.
