The railroad of the Charlotte Harbor & Northern Railway Company, herein called the Charlotte Harbor & Northern, is a single-track, standard-gage, steam railroad, located in southern Florida. The main line extends northerly from South Boca Grande to Mulberry, a distance of 96.477 miles, with branch lines projecting from Cottman to Tiger Bay and from Achan to Ridgewood. The company owns 109.844 miles of main track and 23.336 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 133.180 miles of all tracks owned and used. The Charlotte Harbor & Northern has trackage rights over the road of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company from Mulberry to Kingsford and Prairie Junction, Fla., 3.16 miles.


CORPORATE HISTORY

The Charlotte Harbor & Northern was incorporated June 5, 1897, under special act of the State of Florida, originally as the Alafia, Manatee and Gulf Coast Railway Company for the purpose of constructing and operating a railroad from a point at or near Plant City to a point on Charlotte Harbor, Fla., together with necessary branch lines, and to operate in connection with its railroad, steamboats or other water craft on any of the navigable waters of the State of Florida. Under an amendment to its charter, July 5, 1906, the name of the company was changed to the Charlotte Harbor & Northern Railway Company. The date of organization of the Charlotte Harbor & Northern was not determined.

The construction work of the Charlotte Harbor & Northern, with exception of the branch from Achan to Ridgewood, and a portion of the branch line from Cottman to Tiger Bay, was performed by company forces. The branch line extending from Achan to Ridgewood was constructed by Stockhouse and Beemer, independent contractors, and a portion of the branch line from Cottman to Tiger Bay was constructed by Stedman and Hughes, independent contractors. About 8.96 miles of the road between Fort Ogden and Arcadia, and about 7.04 miles of the road between Cottman and Tiger Bay, were constructed on right of way and graded roadbed acquired by donation from the American Agricultural Chemical Company.
