The railroad of Chicago and West Michigan Railway Company (2), is a standard-gauge, single-track railroad, located entirely within Indiana, extending from the Michigan-Indiana boundary, near Buffalo, Mich., to LaCrosse, Ind., and embracing 34.468 miles of main track and 42.369 miles of all tracks. In addition, the Chicago and West Michigan Railway Company owns jointly 0.15 mile of other than main track, with respect to which further details are given in the summaries by accounts contained in Appendix 1. This property is operated by the carrier, under an operating agreement, the terms of which are set forth below under the caption History of Corporate Financing, Capital Stock, and Long-Term Debt.

Corporate history.—The Chicago and West Michigan Railway Company was incorporated in the States of Michigan and Indiana as a consolidation of the Chicago and West Michigan Railroad Company, the Grand Rapids, Newaygo and Lake Shore Railroad Company, the Grand Haven Railroad Company, and the Indiana and Michigan Railroad Company. This consolidation was effected under the terms of an agreement dated July 16, 1881, filed in Michigan on October 1 and in Indiana on October 5 of that year. By deeds dated February 7, 1884, and November 3, 1899, respectively, the Chicago and West Michigan Railway Company purchased the property of the White River Railroad Company and the Chicago and North Michigan Railroad Company. On December 7, 1899, the property, rights, and franchises of the Chicago and West Michigan Railway Company, including about 547 miles of road in Michigan and about 34 miles in Indiana, were conveyed to the Pere Marquette Railroad Company (1). Subsequently it was discovered that, on account of State laws, the deed to the Pere Marquette Railroad Company (1) was invalid as to that part of the line located within Indiana. The corporate existence of the Chicago and West Michigan Railway Company has therefore been maintained, operation of the Indiana section of the line by the Pere Marquette Railroad Company (1) and later by the carrier being by agreement. Reference is made to the report of the accounting section for data respecting predecessors of the Chicago and West Michigan Railway Company and with regard to the development of its fixed physical property.
