The Deadwood Central Railroad

Location and General Description of Property

The railroad of The Deadwood Central Railroad Company, hereinafter called the Deadwood Central, which also is operated by the Burlington through stock ownership, is a single-track, narrow-gauge line 15.781 miles in length, serving the mines at Lead and Deadwood, S. Dak.

Introductory

The Deadwood Central is a corporation of the State of South Dakota, having its principal office at Deadwood, S. Dak. The accounting records of this company were not obtained for the period from date of its incorporation to March 31, 1893, when control passed to the Burlington. Further, the records reviewed do not indicate that this company itself has maintained accounting records since March 31, 1893. Therefore, the information given in this report pertaining to the financial dealings and investments of the Deadwood Central has been taken from its corporate records and from the records of the Burlington. The Deadwood Central is controlled by the Burlington through ownership of the entire outstanding capital stock. On the other hand, the records reviewed do not indicate that this company, itself, controls any common-carrier corporation. The property of the company was operated by its own organization from the dates of completion to March 31, 1893. From that date to date of valuation it has been operated by the Burlington as lessee, but without written lease or agreement.

Corporate History

The Deadwood Central Railroad was incorporated August 20, 1888, under the general laws of the Territory of Dakota. The date of organization was September 11, 1888.

Development of Fixed Physical Property

The entire railroad owned by the Deadwood Central, 15.781 miles, was acquired by construction. The records reviewed do not indicate by whom the construction work was performed prior to March 31, 1893. Since that date the construction work has been performed by the Burlington. The dates on which the various portions of the road were completed are shown in the following table:

In addition to the 15.781 miles of railroad owned, the Deadwood Central owns a third rail on 8 miles of railroad extending from Deadwood to Englewood, S. Dak. The company acquired a right of way and graded a roadbed between Deadwood and Englewood in 1889 and 1890, and sold it to The Grand Island and Wyoming Central Railroad Company April 26, 1890, reserving the right to lay thereon a third rail. The third rail was laid to Kirk in 1891, and to Englewood in 1905.

Leased Railway Property

The entire property of the Deadwood Central has been operated since April 1, 1893, by the Burlington, by virtue of its control through ownership of the capital stock, but without written lease or operating agreement. The records reviewed do not indicate that any rental has been accrued or paid by the Burlington for its use of the property.
