The Detroit Terminal Railroad[edit]

The Detroit Terminal Railroad Company, herein called the Detroit Terminal Railroad is a standard-gage, steam railroad, located in Michigan. The owned mileage consists of a belt line circumscribing the city of Detroit, comprising 17.996 miles of first main track, 3.780 miles of second main track, and 52.005 miles of yard tracks and sidings. Its road thus embraces 73.781 miles of all tracks.

Introductory[edit]

The Detroit Terminal Railroad is a corporation of the State of Michigan, having its principal office at Detroit, Mich. It is controlled, through the ownership of its entire outstanding capital stock, by The New York Central Railroad Company, The Michigan Central Railroad Company, and The Grand Trunk Railway Company of Canada. The New York Central Railroad Company and The Michigan Central Railroad Company each owns 25 per cent, and The Grand Trunk Railway Company of Canada, 50 per cent. The property was operated by its own organization up to December 31, 1917, and by the United States Railroad Administration beginning January 1, 1918, until after date of valuation.

Corporate History[edit]

The Detroit Terminal Railroad was incorporated December 8, 1905, under the general railroad laws of the State of Michigan for the purpose of constructing and maintaining a belt line from a point on the Detroit River in the eastern part of the city of Detroit, thence around the city to a point on the river in the western part of the city.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]

The railroad of the Detroit Terminal Railroad was constructed by its own forces and those of The Michigan Central Railroad Company. In 1906 the line was constructed from a point on the Detroit River east of Detroit to a junction with the Detroit and Bay City Railroad Company. In December, 1909, it was extended to a connection with the line of the Detroit, Grand Haven and Milwaukee Railway Company and in 1910 west of Woodward Avenue to a connection with the Pere Marquette Railroad Company, south of Grand River Avenue. In 1913 it was further extended to a connection with The Michigan Central Railroad Company near the junction of the latter with the Detroit, Delray and Dearborn Railroad Company.

Leased Railway Property[edit]

The Detroit Terminal Railroad uses about 4 miles of track of the Detroit, Grand Haven and Milwaukee Railway Company for switching cars to and from The New York Central Railroad Company. Payment for use of the track is made by The New York Central Railroad Company direct to the Detroit, Grand Haven, and Milwaukee Railway Company at the rate of 50 cents per car.
