TRAFFIC CONNECTIONS

The railroad of the carrier has traffic connections with the Kanawha & Michigan Railway Company at Palos, Ohio, for interchange of traffic.

CHARACTERISTICS OF COUNTRY

The country traversed by the company is hilly. The principal industry is coal mining.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ROAD

The grading averages about 20,000 cubic yards to the mile, 14 per cent being solid-rock classification, 15 per cent loose rock, and the remainder common. The company has two tunnels on its line, of which one is 195 feet long and the other 497 feet long, both lined throughout with timber. The bridges are pile and frame trestles. The track is laid with 56-pound re-lay Bessemer rail on oak ties.

EQUIPMENT

The equipment of the company consists of two freight-service locomotives, six flat cars, two caboose cars, one steam shovel, one tool car, and one old locomotive tender.

INTRODUCTORY

The railroad of The Federal Valley Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located in the southeastern part of Ohio. The wholly owned and used road extends southeasterly from Palos to Lathrop, a distance of 15.922 miles.

CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated January 29, 1918, under the general laws of the State of Ohio, for the purpose of constructing, acquiring, owning, maintaining, and operating a railroad from Palos to Lathrop, Ohio. On February 1, 1918, the carrier acquired by purchase from The Black Diamond Company that portion of the main line of railroad formerly owned by The Marietta, Columbus and Cleveland Railroad Company, extending from Palos to Lathrop, Ohio. The property thus acquired had been acquired by The Black Diamond Company at a foreclosure sale.

DEVELOPMENT OF FIXED PHYSICAL PROPERTY

The owned mileage of the carrier, 15.922 miles, was all acquired by purchase from The Black Diamond Company. It was constructed during the year 1888 by the Toledo & Ohio Central Extension Railroad Company, a predecessor of The Marietta, Columbus and Cleveland Railroad Company.
