Georgetown Barge, Dock, Elevator and Railway[edit]

Location and Description of Property[edit]

The railroad of the Georgetown Barge, Dock, Elevator and Railway Company, hereinafter called the Georgetown Barge, Dock[sic] Elevator and Railway, is a single track branch line, located within the District of Columbia and extends from Aqueduct Bridge, through Georgetown to Rock Creek at Thirtieth and K Streets Northwest, Washington, a distance of 0.662 mile. This property forms a part of the Georgetown branch projecting from Washington, D. C., to Georgetown Junction, Md.

Introductory[edit]

The Georgetown Barge, Dock, Elevator and Railway is a Federal corporation, having its principal office at Washington, D.C. Information obtained from the accounting records of the company has been supplemented with data compiled from the records of the Baltimore and Ohio. The company is controlled by the Baltimore and Ohio through ownership of capital stock. The records reviewed do not indicate that this company, itself, controls any other common-carrier corporation.

The property of the Georgetown Barge, Dock, Elevator and Railway was operated by the Baltimore and Ohio from December 1891 to December 31, 1917. Since January 1, 1918, it has been operated by the United States Railroad Administration as part of the Baltimore and Ohio system.

Corporate History[edit]

The Georgetown Barge, Dock, Elevator and Railway was incorporated by an act of Congress, approved September 26, 1888, for the purpose of building a railroad with facilities for the delivery of freight to consignees in Georgetown, in the city of Washington, D. C. It was organized November 6, 1888.

Development of Fixed Physical Property[edit]

The owned mileage of the Georgetown Barge, Dock, Elevator and Railway, 0.662 mile, was acquired by construction. The work was begun in February, 1889, and the road was opened for operation in December of that year.

Leased Railway Property[edit]

The entire property is leased to the Baltimore and Ohio as stated in the report on that company.
