Hannibal Union Depot

Location and General Description of Property

The property owned and operated by the Hannibal Union Depot Company, herein called the carrier, comprises passenger-depot facilities at Hannibal, Mo., including 0.962 mile of yard tracks and sidings. This property is used by the Burlington, the Wabash Railway Company, and Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway Company, hereinafter referred to as the tenant companies, under an agreement described elsewhere in this report.

Introductory

The carrier is a corporation of the State of Missouri, having its principal office at Hannibal, Mo. The accounting records of the carrier for the period from the completion of its property to January 1, 1892, are in such a fragmentary condition that nothing of value can be given pertaining to its corporate operations for that period. Although the property of the company was operated by the United States Railroad Administration from January 1, 1918, to date of valuation, the accounts of the company were continued during that period and none had been opened for the United States Railroad Administration.

The carrier is controlled by the Burlington, through ownership of a majority of the outstanding capital stock. On the other hand, the records reviewed do not indicate that the carrier controls any other common-carrier corporation. The property of the carrier was operated by its own organization from May 14, 1882, the date of its completion, to December 31, 1917. On January 1, 1918, its common-carrier property was taken over for operation by the United States Railroad Administration, which still operates it on date of valuation.

Corporate History

The carrier was incorporated June 13, 1881, under the general laws of the State of Missouri, for the purpose of constructing and operating a union depot in the city of Hannibal, Mo. The date of organization was June 30, 1881.

Development of Fixed Physical Property

The property owned by the carrier, consisting of a passenger station and 0.962 mile of yard and sidetracks, at Hannibal, Mo., was all acquired by construction performed under the general supervision of its own forces, and was placed in operation May 14, 1882.

Leased Railway Property

The property of the carrier, consisting of passenger terminals at Hannibal, Mo., is used jointly by the Burlington, the Missouri, Kansas and Texas, and the Wabash, under terms of an agreement of June 1, 1882. The cost of operation and maintenance, plus all taxes, interest on funded debt, and contributions to sinking fund, is paid by the tenant companies on a basis of three-fifths by the Burlington and one-fifth by each of the others. The amount accrued and charged to income for the year ending on date of valuation was $21,449.26.
