The railroad of the Illinois Terminal Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track, standard-gauge, steam railroad, located entirely within the State of Illinois. The line operated extends from Alton in a southeasterly direction to Le Claire, thence south by trackage rights to Formosa. Only that portion of the road extending from Alton to South Wood River (Hartford), about 0.5 mile of road at Wanda, and the line from Cotters to Le Claire is owned by the carrier. These three disconnected links aggregate 11.596 miles of road. They are joined to permit through train movements by the lease from Wabash Railway Company of 3.927 miles of road extending from South Wood River (Hartford) to Cotters, except for the 0.5 mile of road at Wanda which, as above stated, is owned by the carrier. The carrier wholly owns and uses 28.485 miles of all tracks and wholly uses but does not own 3.927 miles of all tracks. It also jointly owns and uses with other carriers 1.041 undivided miles of all tracks, as shown in the trackage table in Appendix 1.

CORPORATE HISTORY

The carrier was incorporated July 8, 1895, under the general laws of the State of Illinois, for the stated purpose of serving certain industries located in the city of Alton, Ill., and furnishing terminal facilities entering, or that would enter, that city. On September 21, 1899, the carrier acquired by merger the corporate property, rights, and franchises of The Illinois & Mississippi Valley Terminal Railroad Company. That company was incorporated June 23, 1899, under the general laws of the State of Illinois for the purpose of constructing and operating a railroad in Madison and St. Claire Counties in that State. It did not construct any railroad property.
